Oh we're having a little trouble with vomiting, nausea and melena, probably because of the Piroxicam he's been on, but it certainly could have been a lot worse.  Yoda's mood and energy haven't been affected much yet, which keeps me from worrying to much.  And he ate and kept his food down today, but he's been fussy over taking his meds (except the sucralifate, which the weirdo loved once he finally let me get some in his mouth).  Anyway, I just posted a whole novel, despite my best intentions, in the "Ask A Vet" section, if people are curious about the details, because there is some concern that the anti-nausea meds he's on may not have been as effective as they should have been, but so far it's no big deal (knock wood).

Thanks so much for the support!

Yoda

I couldn't quite follow the novel (my attention span). Did you stop the piroxicam - I assume you'd have to if he is bleeding? And do they use Cerenia for that type of vomiting? Is the only treatment Sulf.? I always thought intestinal bleeding was a big emergency. But it sounds as though Yoda is doing surprisingly well as usual.

Thanks for the update.  I have been wondering and prayer.  Yoda has certainly found a place in my heart!

Thanks Debra!

Hey Tazzie 2 & Susan - yeah he's off the Piroxicam. He was put on Cerenia by the emergency vet later that night when he was still vomiting, and Yoda's regular doc had me add the Sulf. after I called her to check on that the next day.  Also he has been on Pepcid since the weeked.  So, my understanding is he's on everything possible at home, and yet he still isn't 100%, so the vet tech was telling me on the phone last night that he may have to come in and stay overnight for treatment.  I hate the sound of that so much, but also realize it'll probably be the best thing since Yoda has been fighting me so hard on taking his meds in the last 24 hours or so.

I'm just getting a lot of mixed signals from him.  He hasn't been lethargic, he's been peppy.  His gums brightened to their normal pink after being pale for weeks.  Yes, he had some black stool Wednesday and a little yesterday, but this morning it lightened back to brown - however it was rather loose.  And after he fought against taking his meds this morning, shortly after I laid down his regular food, he got up and ate, but only about half of it.  Still after refusing a tiny morself of meaty goodness, eating half his dry food seemed like a good sign against nausea.

Haven't gotten the call yet from his oncologist.  I called to leave a message to be sure my message from last night didn't slip through the cracks, but I expect she's just been tied up with other urgent cases.  I'm getting a little concerned though that I'll need to call in sick to work.

So that's a little shorter and hits the highlights.

*deep sigh of tentative relief*

Yoda's oncologist thinks it's likely that the Sulf. is actually the culprit for Yoda's watery mouth and lack of appetite (possible nausea, without vomiting).  Apparently some dogs have that reaction to it.  No one mentioned the possibility when I got the meds, they were more concerned that I wouldn't be able to get him to take it, I guess, and were giving me tips on that.  Poor Yoda, perhaps was trying to tell me with all his squirming  away from the Sulf. this morning that he knew it wouldn't make him feel good!  Sometimes humans are slow, buddy.

So we are to stop the Sulf. and if that's all it was, he should improve in about 24 hours.  However, if he were to vomit or get worse, then he'll need to go in for an injection or two for nausea.  She does not expect that to be necessary.

And thankfully, the oncologist felt the butter would be okay for now, if that's what it takes to get him to swallow his pills.  (He even resisted that a bit this morning, sigh).

Hopefully the nausea won't last long.  Trouble would come home from an afternoon treatment, eat her dinner, and have some nausea by late evening, lasting into late night.  By morning she was ok with the nausea, but still a little tired.  By noon  she was pretty much back to her normal self.

I really hope so!  His chemo didn't make him anywhere near so sick, when he had to take Cerenia after one of his carboplatin treatments.

I'm starting to get scared though that Yoda's resistance to taking his meds (anti-nausea and pain pills) isn't because he's feeling nauseaus, but rather because he finally tasted the pills.  He used to gulp them down with peanut butter or some meaty wet food, but now he licks and chews until he finds the pill and then spits them out.  Changing the outer coating on him is not longer fooling him.  And he's been eating some, but not all, of his dry food meals with a little meat mixed in to tempt him, so I'm worried this is about the taste of the pills rather than about his upset stomach, in which case I desperately need a new strategy for getting him to take his pills because he's just going to keep fighting me harder and harder on this otherwise.  He's on Tramadol and Tylenol/Codeine and I'm afraid the consequence is going to be a lot of pain and even less of an appetite if I can't keep getting these into him.

I started a thread under "tips and resources" if you haven't seen it yet, for suggestions on how to get Yoda to take his pills.  Please post any tricks and strategies you have there.

Thanks!!

Wow, we are so overdue for an update, I don't know where to begin...

Given that the melena (black stool from digesting blood) didn't last, the coughing didn't return, and that a few different anti-nausea drugs weren't fully successful, (and there could be other reasons that I have since forgotten), Yoda's oncologist has concluded that Yoda's enduring nausea/lack of appetite (now, at least) is a symptom only of the cancer, not an ulcer/intestinal bleeding.  She even predicted, the day before it happened, that Yoda may have some appetite at a certain time of the day, for example, he may refuse food in the morning that he will take in the evening.

This is our new new normal, and it's given me some peace, because at least Yoda is being consistently okay now, rather than seeming like he needs to go in for an emergency visit every other day.  So morning through late afternoon, Yoda won't take any kind of food (except maybe a fish-skin stick treat, mmmmmm).  He isn't as active, but is generally happy to go for walks.  But, sometimes as early as 5pm (often later), he will eat.  He'll eat a lot actually, and I have to check myself that I don't let him over-eat even though, at the same time I'm afraid he's going to waste away, only eating at night.

Yoda is even eating dry food again.  But he won't eat the Salmon & Potato dry food I switched him to a couple months ago (because he loooooves fish).  He seems to associate that with his pills and/or his nausea and if I try to mix anything good with that food, he'll spit pieces out.  However, as I tried everything that he might possibly want to eat, when his queasiness was at its worst, I discovered he would eat his good ol' Lamb & Rice dry food.

Besides eating in the evening, he seems like he's 100% as far as energy.  I got him a stuffed ball to de-stuff over and over (I refill it for him) and he'll go four rounds sometimes before tiring of it.  And his walks have me running to keep up.  But that's all nothing compared to what he did tonight... but that has to have it's own thread.  It'll be in the "Share Your Story" forum, if you haven't already seen it by this time.

So, I am very relieved.  I don't let myself worry about his... morning sickness?  He doesn't seem to be in any pain and the nausea (assuming that's what is putting him off his food) seems like it must be better that it was, because his watery mouth has been gradually decreasing and I think it's been back to normal for a day or two now.  In the evenings, into the night, we eat, drink and are merry!!  His oncologist actually said three times, in the same e-mail, that that Yoda's appetite is as good as it is in the evenings, at this stage, is really excellent.  (I guess I came across like I needed three times the reassurance, heh heh).

I think that's all the important info.  Now, I expect I have a lot of catching up on reading posts - it'll probably take me through the weekend - so I'm going to try to get a start on that now before bed.

Oh gosh we are so hoppy you found some good answers about Yoda's issues! Yeay! He really sounds like he's holding steady, and that is so wonderful to hear.

His unwillingness to eat things associated with pills sounds typical, many of us here have done that. As long as he is eating other foods, that's so great. Switch it around, be patient and keep on telling yourself that the 'new normal' is anything but, and all will be fine. As you've already figured out, there's nothing routine about dealing with cancer, all you can do is take things day to day.

Thanks so much for sharing the details. We know how busy you are, and it's so sweet you took time to do this. So many other people will be helped by it. Give our love to Yoda boy!
