Worried About Nova - Symptoms of Lung Mets?

Can anyone tell me if panting is a tell-tale symptom of lung mets?  Nova just passed her 8 month ampuversary, and seems to be feeling good, but in the past few days I have noticed her panting a lot.  Now, it has been in the 90s here, so perhaps I am just paranoid, she might just be hot, but she seems to still pant even when I have the air running. She does not pant when she is laying down, only when she hops around.

Also, about 2 weeks ago I noticed a swelling in her neck area. When I feel her neck I don't really seem to feel any type of mass inside. But sometimes when she is hopping along I see a silhouette of something there. Like golf ball sized, but I can't feel a mass, the whole area is very soft. If it were swollen lymph nodes, wouldn't they be hard? She has gained some weight, so might it be a pocket of fat?

She is going in on Friday to the oncologist for new chest x-rays and whatever else they do at the follow up.  I of course am very nervous about it, in fact I was supposed to take her in a few weeks ago but chickened out. This has all been complicated with her blindness (she was blinded by glaucoma a few months ago). I might be mistaking glaucoma problems for other problems, who knows? She moves around a lot slower as a blind Tripawd, so of course it seems like she's slowing down, but it might just be because she is trying to not bump into things. (It's so funny, she uses her giant wagging tail as a sort of blind dog "cane" to feel her way around).

No coughing, appetite is great, tail wagging as usual. But I still worry anyway.

Sorry I haven't posted in a long time, or keeping her blog updated, things have been crazy with getting her adapted to blindness, and I have big things going on with my mother (who has Alzheimer's and is in a REALLY tough phase right now). I promise to post more often from now on!

I'm so glad you posted, I was thinking about Nova last night.  I've noticed a lot of panting and tiredness in Trouble also, but am thinking it is all heat related.  She just doesn't seem to be getting around so well when she's outside, but I don't notice so much when she's inside.

Hoping the oncology visit goes well and puts your mind at ease.  Nova is such a great ambassador for us all.

I am sorry to hear that you are both worried about your lovely dog and have health problems in the family also. I know this can be a great strain for you, as much the same has been happening to us. Be sure to take care of yourself to find the strength you need to care for Nova. I can't talk to the panting as I am not a vet, but I do know dogs pant for many reasons and 90 degree heat would have me panting.

Best wishes, Jane and Ember

Hi Sue!  I found your "Great Dane Times" while searching for cancer groups.  I see you are in Linden, MI.  We are in Grand Rapids.  Do you know of any Michigan canine cancer get-togethers here?  I would really like to connect with some local-type people.  It has been exceptionally hot here, so I hope Nova is just reacting to the heat 🙂  One pawed hugs from Jackers to Nova!!

Not necessarilly. We were in Utah in the summer when we first freaked out over Jerry panting heavily. A call to his vet revealed it was most likely the heat. Once we got to Colorado he stopped panting altogether! Best wishes for a fabulous follow-up!

I guess we will just have to wait and see tomorrow.  She isn't coughing or anything and is in great spirits.

To Jack's pawrent who commented above:  I am not aware of any get-togethers in Michigan.  I would love to be a part of one, though.  I know there are a few people I've seen around on Tripawds from Michigan. Perhaps we should post in the Tripawd Party section. I am willing to drive a few hours for a Tripawd Party!  (Nova loves car rides).

I am hoping and praying that it is just the heat.

I'm in michigan as well!  I'm near the Mt. Pleasant area.. only about an hour and a half from Grand Rapids.  It sure has been uncommonly hot here so I wouldn't doubt that Nova's issue is with our aweful heat and of course, michigan humidity!   I hope your vet appointment goes well.  Keep your chin up and keep cool.. I think it's supposed to cool down to 86 tomorrow!

It could just be the heat.  Tazzie has panted more off and on ever since her leg was amputated.  I even went so far as to have a cardiologist come and ultrasound her heart (results were normal).  I have concluded that since she is so huge it takes a lot of energy to motor around on 3 legs and sometimes a girl just has to pant to catch her breath!

We will be wishing you the best of luck tomorrow.  Friday is Tazzie's 10-month anniversary so we are starting to look towards a party in August marking 1 year.

Please keep us updated,

Pam and Tazzie

Thank you!  I got her appointment bumped up to 11:30 this morning, from 2:30. I just couldn't face sitting here all day wondering.

I appreciate all your thoughts and prayers.

Hi Sue - we hope that all went well at the appointment today. I would think and I pray that it's just the heat...zeus pants more in the summer time - always has - but even more so since becoming a tripawd. I have him shaved almost to the skin this year to help keep him as cool as possible (he looked like a little weasle coming out of his hair cut - LOL - but of course as cute as ever ;-))

We are keeping paws crossed and puppy prayers going. Please post when you can . Prayers for your mom too - I'm sorry you're dealing with so much at one time. Just remember - what doesn't break us, makes us stronger. We are all here for you.
