My cat Lucy had her right front leg amputated for cancer in her foot. What should I expect during recovery? She was crazy last night till about 7, but has been calm since. Her appetite is good. She stood today but fell over. How long does recovery take?

Hi Lucy and family. Welcome to Tripawds! Please consider registering as a member so your posts won't need approval.

Check out our What to Expect articles about amputation recovery, you will get a good idea of what the typical recovery looks like. Our Three Legged Cats Forum also has some great stories.

You mention that she was crazy last night. How long ago was surgery? And what pain medications is she on? Good pain control is the key to a good recovery.

A few stumbles here and there aren't unusual, but being a cat, she will find her bearings pretty quickly. Right now you really want to minimize activity and keep her in a small part of your home to prevent her from doing too much, too soon. Otherwise, recovery can take longer and lead to things like incision problems, seroma and sometimes unnecessary muscle pain.

It's great that she's eating!!!

Oh one more question: how old/young is she?
