Hey guys. Thanks for the responses and glad you're enjoying the stories and pics. Not sure why I didn't realize it before, but the pic of him on the steps with the sunlight really is great. I do need to add some Wally photos to my now Boxer shrine table (as it has both Wally's and Benny's ashes), and I'll definitely include that one.
Wally was definitely the saint of the 2 that I've had. Benny was a handful to say the least. He was a great dog, but he had pretty bad attachment anxiety coupled with being too smart for his own good. If and when I get another dog I really hope he's much more Wally than Benny, lol.
Sally - you're spot on with your comments on the Angels thread about remembering the day. Overnight we had the most snow we've had in the area since 2008. While Wally had become pretty indifferent to snow, when he was younger he loved it. Anytime it snowed he'd get the zoomies and happily run around the back yard as fast as he could. A little bittersweet memory right now, but more sweet than bitter so I'm taking that as a good sign!
Thanks again and have a good evening.
Hey guys,
It's been a couple of weeks and I hit a milestone yesterday, so I thought I'd stop in to say hi. For the most part I'm doing pretty well. I started a new job this past week (I alluded to it, but I had been in job transition due to Covid since June - at least for a full time role), and a good friend and I went to a concert at my favorite venue last night. It was the first show I've been to since early Oct. and only the second one since everything shut down last year, so it was great to get out and see some live music.
So yesterday was not only 1 month since Wally passed, but it would have been his 10th gotcha day . I was planning on grilling him up a filet mignon. Pretty bummed that I didn't get the chance to do that . I had been dreading yesterday for a couple of weeks, but surprisingly I didn't really get choked up during the day. I guess it being my first Friday on the new job and the concert were enough of good distractions to keep the sadness away. The week wasn't without sadness though. I got pretty choked up driving home Monday realizing it was the first time in a decade that I was coming home from work without having Wally waiting at home to greet me. Also, on Thursday I was scrolling through my sister and I's text thread looking for her address when I ran into some pics of Wally and texts I had sent a couple of days before he passed telling her how well his was doing. That was pretty rough, especially since I was at work and had to keep things in. Overall though, as stated I am doing pretty well.
Here are a couple of pics from Wally's actual gotcha and his fifth gotcha day, where he was starting to show his distinguished gray lol. I think you guys will like them.
Also, I have a question on tributes. I believe we discussed I could do one for Wally and since the dust has settled now I'd like to do that. I'm seeing where I can make a donation to the foundation but not seeing anything about a tribute. Are they one in the same?
Edit: Nevermind the question. I was able to figure it out and submitted a donation and Wally's tribute.
Thanks
Rich
Rich it is so good to hear from you. Thank you for the generous gift too! We are so grateful and look forward to sharing your tribute to Wally.
You had quite a week. Wally's milestone, new job, going into the "real world," well, it's enough to make even the strongest person feel heartache and want to cry. I know I would. But I think that you handled everything so well, no doubt because Wally was your greatest teacher, and he was with you every step of the way as you made it through the week and this bittersweet milestone. It would have been easy to get stuck in a cycle of sadness after seeing the text thread with his photos, but you didn't. You followed Wally's lead, absorbed the moment and made the most of the day, and felt pawsitive about all of the moments you found yourself in this week. He is so proud of you!
Those photos are adorable In the first one, Wally looks like a happy doggie lotto winner. He's almost saying "Wow, is this for real?" And in the second one he's right at home as the big dog in charge. What a blessing for that boy!

Thanks again as always for the kind and supportive words, and you're welcome for the donation. I know it'll go to a good use for a great cause! I really do appreciate all of the support you guys have given me through all of this.
Even though I'm managing and doing ok, it's definitely been a really challenging month. Going from having your best friend there everyday for 9 years and 11 months to suddenly not having him with you anymore is obviously super tough. Anytime I do a first without him (even something silly like drive home from work) or revisit that dreadful day it hits me pretty hard. But life goes on, and I know Wally would want me to keep my chin up and be happy. So that's what I'm doing my best to do, and the support you guys have given has helped there a lot.
I'm glad you like the pics. Yeah, I remember Wally's gotcha day really well, as it's obviously one of my favorite days. He was so small and cute at the time, and I do believe he was awe struck. He was so cautious on going around the house and checking things out. I had set out some bones and toys left over from Benny, and before he would pick them up he would sniff at them and give me an "is this ok?" look. Then after I tell him, "That's ok. Those are for you now." He'd then either start chewing on the bone or start playing with his new toy. At the end of the day I put a movie on, and he curled up next to me and fell asleep with his head in my lap. What a great day.
So again thanks and take care. I'll try to stop by every so often to say hi and catch up a bit.
Yes, the "firsts" are the worst! I agree. When I find myself thinking of those dreadful moments we had with Wyatt (or Jerry, or even my Dad), I change the channel in my brain to a happier time. Do it enough times and it becomes natural. It's one way to keep from sliding down that slippery slope of sadness. And yes, Wally totally wants you to be happy!
Awe struck is a great descriptive of Wally in that photo! He really did like he couldn't believe the wonderful place he landed. What a life you gave your good boy!
You take care too, don't be a stranger and thanks again 🙂

Yeah, quite a leap from the puppy photo to the grey muzzle photo. thousands of Hjappy memories in between with this very good boy!😊
And. make no mistake about it. Saint Wally gets grilled Fillet Mignon every night at the ridge! In fact, it was his welcome home dinner the first night he arrived at the Bridge👍
You've been through a lot on some ma y different levels these past many months, And yes. The silver lining was the extra stay at home time you had with Wally. He ,loved it!!
The grief will hit you in waves out or the blue for quite awhile. And yes, those firsts are rough. You did a very nice tribute to your Wally. That picture of him in the sun always makes my heart smile.
We love hearing about your buddy.......and the pictures!
Hugs

Hi Sally! Good to hear from you as it had been awhile. Thanks as always for the kind words and advice, and I'm glad you enjoy the pics and stories on Wally. Not sure if you knew, but Wally's actually my second Boxer I lost to cancer. My first was Benny, who had lymphoma and passed away in Jan. '11 which was ~11 months after diagnosis. So I have been through this before, but Wally's passing has definitely been tougher since it was so sudden and I had Wally a lot longer (10 years vs. 5). But things are getting better as the good memories are seeming to outweigh the sadness from his loss, so that's good. I think doing Wally's tribute has helped turn the page there.
Renee - Thanks as well for the kind words as always and for posting Wally's tribute here and on FB. Do you know why it's only on the Foundation News page and not the other tribute pages? No big deal, just wondering.
Thanks Again to you both. Hope you're having a good weekend!
Rich
Well now you jave two handsome Boxers up at the Bridge watching over you. Don't know ifBenny and Waslly had a chance to meet on earth, but I know they are BFF's at the Bridge👍
So my avatar name "Benny" was a little tribute to my sweet boy named Benny who had osteosarcoma many years ago. At the time, amputation wasn't even mentioned. I knew nothing about it and google ,was non existent back then. Benny actually lived many, many months .longer than "prognosis" and, although he had some pain I'm sure he of course never showed it. (I think Tramadol was the pain med at the maybe something else, can't remember). Anyway, knowing now how much pain can be involved and how susceptible to fracture the leg is, I am now astounded, truly astounded at how full of life and joyous and happy he was!!! He would play ball, jump all around....just crazy Happy! I do now know he was a very lucky exception.
So that's the story of my Benny. Sounds like both Benny's beat the odds😎

Hey Rich, you are so welcome!

I'm not sure what you mean, do you mean like Tripawd Tuesday? Those are submitted by members and I'm totally happy to share yours there if you'd like to send us one that's at least a paragraph and a different photo of Wally than the one you sent for the Honor Roll. The Honor Roll is where donors to the Foundation get their Tripawd listed, which is why Wally's is there. Hope that makes sense. Message me if you'd like!

Hi Renee - Sent you a PM with links to explain.
Sally - Sounds like both of our Bennies were great dogs. My Benny didn't necessarily beat the odds (if memory serves me correctly the oncologist gave him 6-12 months with treatment) but he did come close to the high end of life expectancy. So he faired much better than Wally unfortunately did . They never did meet, as Benny passed on Jan. 8th of 2011, and I brought Wally home for his trial visit a little under 2 months later on Feb. 26th. They were quite different, so I hope they're getting along. Benny's probably running around with a ball in his mouth while it's 50/50 that Wally's either running around with him toyless or just relaxing in the sun.
Here's a couple of Benny pics (and a much younger version of me):
Thanks again and have a great Sunday!
Rich
Oh I love the photos! You guys kinda grew up together!!

Thanks! Glad you liked them. Funny, I can't remember the last time I shared some photos of Benny, and believe it or not those 2 were actually taken less than 3 years apart. It's kind of interesting that the energetic and rambunctious Benny saw me out of my 20s into my 30s, and my mellow and well mannered Wally saw me through my 30s and into my 40s. Very fitting.
Awwww.....such great photos. Benny looked as proud as he could be to be at uour side cheering for your team. I love that you could take your dogs with you throughout the years.
Hahaha....Benny showed up because he could mirror your personality at the time. And then along came Wally to compliment and mirror your...er......more " mature" personality. A perfect match from both dogs at the exact right time👍

Awwww. We always get the pets we need at just the right time in our life. Your two boys knew exactly when to show up for you.

Thanks guys. Appreciate the comments as always. Hope your weekends are off to great starts.
The first Benny pic was from 11/05 right after I adopted him and the 2nd was at Reds Bark in the Park in ~Sept. '08 (I think. Could have been in ~April '09). Benny LOVED it. Poor Wally couldn't b/c of the fireworks (as told earlier).
It is crazy how both of them came along at times when they were better fits. Although I have to admit that Benny was very much a challenge when I first got him, but we eventually figured it out. Wally was pretty much a perfect (or at least near perfect) fit from the get go. Man I miss him .
Thanks again.
