We are on day 19. Tasha got her stiches out on Sat. She is getting around good but I find myself still a worried mess. Like you have said it is easier on them than on us, how very true. She is still having to wear her cone and a sock, when we take them off she wants to lick and scratch. Don't think it will be much longer and those will come off as well. She is laying on her amp side now and even laying upside down again, which is her favorite way to lay, before surgery she wasn't able to do that any longer. It is so wonderful to see her being herself again, twinkle in her eyes and her tail wagging and now whoofing for a pet. I feel so blessed that when I look down and she her there that we made the decision to do the surgery and bless each moment that we have with her. sf-smile

Tasha lost her battle and became my Angel on May 4 2011. Forever in my heart….

Sounds like Tasha is doing great.  Glad to hear it!

It is very good to hear how well Tasha is doing.  The cone and sock will come off once the "iching" has stopped and that probably will be a few days after the stiches.  They never stop amazing me at how fast the adapt.

Still sending you those pawsitive thoughts,

Hello--

I don't know if you have ever had major stitches, but that itching is HARSH.  I had cut my heel to the bone and had the several layers of repair and I wore a glove at night to remind me to not scratch.

I'm guess this is a front leg amp? I didn't even think about the pups with front amps being able to access that with their back leg. YIKES. Tika is a rear amp.

Did you give Tasha a sponge bath after the surgery?  The vet doesn't always get all of the medicated shampoo and antiseptic off them, Tika was very antsy until I gave her a bath and rubbed some baby lotion on her skin, then she calmed down immensely.

Like Bob says, now that the stitches are out the irritation and itchiness (which in my personal experience is actually tightness of your skin healing) anyway, it will all get better soon.

If Tasha is up for exercise, I would let her do what she can within reason, keep those muscles and joints loose and help her gain strength back and strength in those remaining legs.  My husband and I think we were too overprotective of Tika at first (humans!)

Good luck, sounds like everything is going well so far!

Oh that's good news! And it's great that you are able to put your worries aside enough to enjoy all of the healing victories.

Remember when you never thought you'd get past the first post-amp week? And now you're almost a month out. Yeay! See, it does get easier. The worries might not ever go away, but at least you are getting to experience all of the joys you, and we, had hoped for. Keep it up!
