Sasha had her operation May 13... things have not gone well for the old girl so far. The surgerie wound is doing OK...  The area around it  has had a lot of bruising, it's black, and redness. The dark bruised skin is starting to come away in places. Theses also a little fluid, not blood, leaking. I made the call to take her to the emergency vet on Sunday... $920 later we find out there's some infection going on. I figured that would be the case, but I'd hoped this was normal... Blood work done by the vet is also showing Sasha Isa little anemic and her liver levels are now reading on the low end of high, it was high end of lown before.

Hi Natasha.

Wo sorry your sweet Sasha ie having these challenges .

You did the right thing by getting  her to the ER and now your Vet this morning,  Gueesing they gave you a course of antibiotics  at the ER?

Sid they mention of any of the skin around the incision  was dead?

Regardless,  getting your Vet to do a culture, check out the reasons ro the anemia,  etc.  As yucky as it was to see, the "burst of infection" tetting out was agood thing for starter

Did Sasha have osteosarcoma  or another form?

Was all of her blood work normal before the surgery

In a senior dog having a little elevation in some of the bloodwork can be sort of "usual" so try not to panic.

A nyway, you have her at  your Vet now.    I'm sure they can get things turned around and help her feel better and heal.

Update when you can, okay?

((((((((((HUGS))))))))

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

PS.   Going to "assume" you are the same Natasha  who called the Helpline last night?  I did return your call this morning and left a VM.  This was before I saw this post.  Have to step out a bit but will try and call you later, okay?  Hang in there!!!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Oh yikes! I'm so sorry. Hopefully it was either a seroma , or a release of abscess fluid. Either way I hope this will get her on the path to recovery. Please keep us posted.

Hey, folks. Just here with an update. The vet gave her a dressing, which she's already leaked through. There was no issue until I brought her back in. I've been told that's going to be normal for a bit because the tissue isn't healthy enough, because yes their is dead tissue. The dead tissue is actualy not at the actual incision. We go back Thursday to see how things look.

Oh, yes Benny. Sasha was given a few different medications. We left the emerge vet with Metacam, Bactrim and Clavaseptin. Sasha still has the Gabapentin she was sent home with on day one.

Sasha had to have her leg removed because of a large cancerous growth. It was pretty much right on her hip. Originally I was told it was a fatty lump, that's what the tests showed. Well it developed a mind not it's own. It kept getting bigger and started to change color. It was a deep purple/ red by the time I could get it taken care of.

Before Sasha had her operation, we did do blood work and x- rays. Everything was surprisingly good. I've been told the anemia is likely because of the surgerie. Being an older girl and the amount of blood she lost, as careful as the vet was, be a little anemic is not surprising. Same with her liver values being up isn't surprising either, considering it's working overtime right now.

I'm sure the old girl will be alright, but she needs to stop with the issues now. I only make so much money... plus my heart breaks seeing her like this. Unfortunately we're going to be in this for the long haul. With the dead tissue and infection, getting her back up and running is going to take way longer then I wanted for her.

Just got off the phone with a follow up call to Natasha  to see how the Vet appt went and BAM....here's a thorough update from her for everyone!

I can tell uou this from my phone conversation with nNatasha, she's on top of things and it appears the vet is as well. Sasha is very lucky to have such a good advocate for her and someone with such a strong determined and confident outlook.  You can tell from her post, in spite of everything,  she still has a sense of humor! That's hard to do sometimes on this crazy journey, but it sure does help keep things balanced.

One thing I forgot to ask you Natasha, could you take a picture of the incision and make sure you include where this infection "bubbled over"? I know you mentioned that the vet put some stitches in it because of the dead skin and we'll think about putting a drain in if necessary in a couple of days.

Here's a link for adding images . Let us know if you need any help getting a picture posted, okay?

Take care and get some well-deserved rest!

Hugs

Update- My first day back to work since Sasha had her operation... and she gets out of her cone of shame , and her bandages... and removed most of the dead tissue... From what I can tell the stiches look good... _-_... Yes I was talking to a vet. They weren't overly concerned.... Now to top things off I need to find a place for me and Sasha to go June 1st. I was staying with a work friend... but this whole thing has been to much for them. I can't be mad, or even disappointed, at them. They've been wonderful... but they are right. Everything about this is a lot. I just don't know what to do. I literaly don't have two nickels to rub together at the moment. Everything I had has gone into Sasha... I'm trying to be positive but all I really want to do is cry... are there any tripawds in the Sussex NB area that could help us.

Natasha I'm so glad you called the helpline today, I hope I was able to help you feel a little better about things.

I'm sorry she got to her infection area but YAY that she didn't do more damage! Please let us know how her vet visit goes on Monday.

This is such a challenging situation for you, and everything hit you all at once, but it will get better. You and Sasha are a team, and both working hard to overcome the crappy stuff that's happened recently. I know it doesn't feel that way now, but it will!

I'm going to Private Message you some links, please check your inbox OK?

Update! Sasha's vet said thigs are heading in the right direction. The wound left by the dead tissue was stiched closed... now we need to keep an eye on a hot spot that's formed... the other issue I brought up when talking on the phone... well that hasn't changed.
