Hi, me and Shelby again. We are inching closer to our amputation date (her oncologist and surgeon will discuss tomorrow since Shelby is currently being treated with chemo for a different kind of cancer). In the meantime, her bum leg has been bugging her since her visit at the ER yesterday with the Xrays, etc. I have been giving her the recommended dosage of tramadol (I was at work all day so no clue what she did) but she's been whining up a storm and staring at the wall. Is she high?

She ate her dinner just fine and perks up when she hears the cookie jar and when I was making MY dinner. Other than the odd 'stoner' like behavior, she doesn't appear to be in significant pain. Just curious if anyone else has experienced this. I might call the ER just to be safe but I am pretty sure she's just feeling drugged and not liking it.

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Tramadol can cause whining.  I am not a vet though so I honestly can't remember all the side affects that can happen.  If I remember right Sassy did whine a few times on it right after surgery but that could have been the fentanyl.  You can make a post in the ask a vet category and one of the vets will check in :)

Thank you! I called her vet (they were still there) and assured me this was normal. I think I remember this from last time she had it when her leg was broken. How quickly we forget the bad things! As long as I am paying attention to her - she seems fine. Probably just spooked by the drugs. 🙂

Just curious if the vet ccan give any insight as to what happened when they did the xray? I guess I'm jst thinking maybe they tweaked it i such a way that it did some type of damage. It just seems that if it was just pain from manipulating it, she would have been better today

Maybe you can get them to figure out what the cause of her discomfort is when you go intomorrow!

Reall glad she's eating amd, otherwise, doing okay!

I'm no vet either, but Hapoy Hannah was on it for a couple of weeks prior to surgery...not very big dose at first...anyway, she didn,t have any noticeable reactins. After surgery, when she was on bigger doses she was dong a lot of whining and crying but I feel like thay was more from surgery pain.

So, zero help here!!

Jist ant to send you hugs and support! Please post as soon as you can tomorrow and let us kow what the vet says. There's a link on here...of course I'm not savvy enough to tell you how to find it......anyway....it's a list of questions to ask your surgeon, onc, vet.

Snuggle tht sweet Shelby for us! Love that avatar picture of hers...very sweet soul!!

All three of my pugs have been on tram at least once. Quads Tani and Obie have no side effects at all, although it is hard to get Tani to take it. Tri-pug Maggie on the other hand tended to get really agitated on tram. She wouldn't sleep, and was obviously seeing things. It's odd how the same dosage brings different effects, but you hear lots of stories of whining here that sound like Shelby's.

I'm sorry your path has lead to amputation. I'll be looking for Shelby updates.

Shelby did/does not like the tramodol and now that it has worn off, she is back to normal (limping but normal). She threw up - twice - in the middle of the night and was really antsy and drinking a ton of water. It was solid food that she threw up so according to all I have read, this is a side effect so I'm going to ease off it today since she doesn't appear to be in any significant pain. I realize her limping is her in pain but I also realize she seems a lot happier w/out the meds in her system.  She had two doses yesterday and for a little dog (24#) it was probably too much for her.

So I haven't slept which makes me a crabby caregiver so I am hoping we'll hear good news today about our next course of action. She can look into my eyes and I think she knows that I love her and that i am working as hard as I can to take care of her and get her out of pain as quickly as possible. Long road ahead. Thank you all!
