Hey TJ way to go! Here's to a good recovery!
Stay tuned for a nutrition blog post about Heather's doggie diets experience, which is very well-researched, we'll be sharing that soon. In the meantime, I just wanted to chime in that my people fed me a partial raw diet before and after cancer and I did pretty good on it. There's been a lot of dogs here with cancer who have as well, however I'm almost certain none of us were going through chemo at the time. I would definitely discourage it for dogs that are going the chemo route, that can be a dangerous combo. But what I would recommend for TJ is that you really do your research and if you've never fed raw before, you definitely want to consult with a professional holistic vet dietician to make sure you're doing it right.

Thanks Jerry!
Sally- I am positive that I'll be freaking out and I'm also positive that I'll have my Tripawds.com IV hooked into my arm for the next few weeks!!! Thanks for the kind words of encouragement!
Barret was diagnosed with Hemangiopericytoma May 16, 2013. Front left leg/scapula/pectoral muscle was amputated on June 11, 2013 and we've never looked back. Follow our story on http://barret.t.....pawds.com/ and read my column on That Pet Blog

Depending on the type of cancer, micrometastasis is usually present in the lungs at the time of diagnosis but only proper scans reviewed by an oncologist can determine if they are visible or a cause for concern. FYI: Our Jerry lost his leg and scapula to osteosarcoma and survived two years!

A'Tuin had saggy boob too! He is now almost two weeks post amp and doing really good, no more saggy boob, no more bruising, no more swelling... Just a little discharge left. Hang in there with TJ. He will probably have a lot of ups and downs. A'Tuin hit a slump about 4-5 days after his amp but then has steadily picked up since then.
I have decided not to switch diets for A'Tuin at all. After talking to Laura (my vet and step-mom) and reading some peer-reviewed research on it, the only evidence that altered diets are helpful is anecdotal. Of course, I'm not saying that people who choose these diets are crazy, but it's a lot of time and expense that I don't think is worth it based on the evidence. I also have to factor in that I care full time for my grandmother with dementia into these decisions as well. Also, as a person who did a lot of research in school (both in science and in the social sciences) and whose academic career is research, I do tend toward being more skeptical which is not always the best nor the worse. However, I also think what people don't take into account with anecdotal evidence is the complexity of disease and healing (whether in human or pets). What some people may attribute to one factor may actually be the result of another. Most people who put their dogs on special diets and such likely tend to be more involved pet parents and that might be the factor that contributes more to survival rates. At least, if I was researching this, that would be the correlation that I would make. But, I'm no vet and I'm not researching this beyond what I did to make my decision and these decisions have to be made by individual pet owners. Whew, guess I better step off my soap box.
As I said, I am glad to hear that TJ is doing well and I'm glad to be able to follow the progress of a fellow front amp!
A'Tuin's story can be found on my personal blog along with a dash of my life and poetry.
I said goodbye to my puppy love on 5/15/14 after more than tears years of the greatest love I've ever known.
TJ has only had 1 post op x-ray and that was clear.
He's a normal dog 11 year old dog.. loves the walks (although much shorter) and has mastered one arm chew toys. He's slowing down due to age and is using the ramp on the porch more and more (finally!)
He coughs sometimes... but I think its more the cold weather (I hope) but its only now and then... unless something changes I won't get another x-ray till the first week in November.
Right now he is under my desk, on my bare foot sleeping. Just like he used to. If anything we are 'closer' now than ever.. I roll him onto his amp side so sleep, rub his amped shoulder, basically I just had to learn a few new TJ-isms.
Now how's that.......I just saw your reply on a other post and I added another reply "to TJ" for an update AND photo! BAM! Here you are over here on TJ's place! Good update! Even if it is lacking a picture of that sweet face hou d!
Yeah, weather changes can cause some "allergy type" symptons, coughing, etc. But he's feeling great regardless and thst's all that atters! WOW! Eleven! Good job TJ and dad! And you are a verh good dad! Senior trioawds are a sacred bunch around here!
TJ, you're a very clever boy teaching your dad all the TJ.isms! Humans can just be so darn hard to train so etimes, but it looks like ne's a pretth quick learner. Love that you taught yourself how to play with your toys with one arm!
Keep soaking up the loving and the spoiling TJ! You deserve it! And it sounds like you're getting plenty of it!
PHOTOS! Come on pop! Don't we have an amuversary to celebrate with PHOTOS??:
Hugs to all your pack!

This is such a great update, thanks for sharing with us. To see how far you've both come is just wonderful. For an 11 year old doggie, TJ sure is young at heart. Yipee! You both have a great attitude about all of it. Reality based and hopeful. I love it.
And I agree, we need some pix

That ole' stupid cough could be so many sifferent thi gs. I di knw that sometimes the dogs on here have been prescribed various types of over the counter cough medicine and...regardless of the cause...that seems to help! AND they do't have to have one of those awful vet visits to do it! Ugh!
Yo are happy! You are clearly enjoying life! Your dad is taking great care ofyou and knows you so well. He knows what makes you happy and is making sure this wonderful time together is full of love and fun and contentment! You are o e lucky hound!! You keep beating the odds TJ and make up YOUR own rules! You are one tough fella' and we are all cheering for you!
Thanks for the photi.....puts smles on our faces!!
Love to the entire TJ Pack!
