Hi all:

Tika took a spill down our deck stairs yesterday (only 3 of them, and it was a bit slick) when she went firing out after our other dog to go rabbit hunting last night.

My husband said she just laid there and whined and yelped and he ran out to check on her and calm her down. The thing is except for a few soft whimpers, she only yelped once post surgery when she accidently collided with our other dog.

Now, I'm travelling for work right now and am freaking out. My husband thinks she's fine, and I don't want him to feel worse than he does that it happened, but I feel really helpless and worried.

She's only 1 1/2 months post amp, 2 chemo sessions down.  Is it possible that when she fell she hit her stump and she had the mother of all funny bone hits? (That's how it was described to me by my human friend who had his leg amputated).  Should we possibly take her to the vet?

My husband kept an eye on her, but said she was kinda shaky and clingy afterwards.  He said she's seems pretty normal today.

I'm overseas and don't get home until Thursday. Has anybody had any experience with this?  Am I taking it for granted because she has done so well that she is still technically recovering?

If anybody has any thoughts they can share, I would appreciate it.  I'm sure I'm just overreacting and being an idiot, but that's my job when it comes to my furry kids!

Take care all.

Poor Tika girl!! And poor Mom for being so far away.....thats got to be hard. If it were me I would at least call the vet just to make sure that there isnt anything that you should be looking for. I would guess that it hurt (just like it would any of us) and probably freaked her out a little, plus that area has got to be sensitive. A call to the vet would make you and your husband feel better!!

Sending a big hug to you both from Max and me!!Cool

Hi Tika's mom and dad...I would suggest the same exact thing Paula did.

Zeus still takes a few chin dives...not like Tika did, but when he does, he's a little shaken up...

Hope she is feeling better and wishing you safe travels home.

Hi,

Now being tripawd certain situations sometimes calls for assistance. Especially with this winter weather... I have a ramp built off of the deck, although Buster attempts to still use the steps. So I blocked off the stair area and force him to use the ramp. Also getting in and out of my suv, I have to help him there also ,since he did slip on some ice. Times like these the harness really comes in handy, to just escort him with the handle. I know sometimes it can be cumbersome, however it helps to prevent an aversion since he will have a issue using the steps if he takes another spill.

Buster hates going to vet, since the floors are so slippery. A little caution goes a long way. Since a serious fall could possobly cause some permanent damage... better safe then sorry is my motto. Hope you feel better Tika!

PS I don't think your over reacting at all, just a concerned pawrent

Kim,

I can't count the times Calamity has spilled since her amp, usually her own fault, chashing her sister & brothers, chasing the critters, or just plain racing around the backyard. She has yiped and we were worried but she worked it out & was always ok.

I can understand how you must feel though. Hang in there & watch her.

Just mention it to Dr Heeb and she'll have one of the surgeons take a look at her when she goes for her chemo.

Ha, my nickname after surgery was "Mister Stumbles"! But you know what, whenever I did a face plant, I just got back up and kept going. It was Mom that really flipped out, she felt worse than I did.

Kim's right about the harness. We found that it's always good to have on except when sleeping, because just when you least expect we will need it, we'll need it!

Hi all:

I got home today and happy to announce that I was promptly mauled and pinned by a three-legged Malamute.  My hubby thinks she probably bruised her stump and he learned to put her 'brakes' on for her before she darts out the door.

She's been following me around the house giving me hell for being gone and tormenting her 'sister', so pretty normal behavior.

We are still going to mention what happened during her oncology appt on Monday (also lung X-rays, eeek) just in case.

Thanks for all of your thoughts! It really helped, especially since I was away from my girl.

By the way–I got my Cancer can't keep a good dog down. Puppy Up! shirt today.  I think it applies more to me than Tika!Laugh

Oh… That sounds scary. I'm really sorry Tika had to go through that but found it helpful to read that the other pups have done taken a spill & been OK.

I'm pretty nervous about that happen to Zak as well but I guess it will at some point so I'll have to be prepared for it.
