I dropped Shelby at the vet this a.m. and tried SO hard to be a strong pack leader. I held it together pretty well (you would think, her 3rd surgery, I would be used to this by now). She was shaking a bit but for the most part - really good spirits. Really good. She was active and animated this a.m. before we left (sharking around for food/water which she could have none of). I did get her 1/4 of a tramadol last night when out of the blue she started shaking like a leaf. 35 min later, we had an earthquake. Go figure - she was trying to warn me! But both of us slept through the night.

I talked to her surgeon last night who agreed, again, this is the best option for her. The other option would have been radiation therapy which is really just pain management so I think we picked the right course of treatment - even knowing she does have terminal blood cancer. If she is pain free for even 1 month it will be worth it in my eyes.

So now I wait. They will call before she goes in and when she comes out. I am really hoping they do her surgery this a.m. so I don't have to wait ALL day. I did come to work but thankfully, it's a light day for me so I can distract myself with forums and emails. And since they have visiting hours, I will go see her tonight, knowing she will be drugged and high as a kite.

I also looked at photos on this site last night of post-op after reading Jerry's books about preparing. I don't know if anything will really prepare me to see MY baby like that BUT she's had worse. They took a huge chunk of her neck once for biopsy and that was pretty intense. I am just going to look at her eyes, tell her she's beautiful and that her mama loves her more than life itself. And I think my home is ready for her. The good part of her limping is that she's already prepared to be a tripawd. I have carpet. I have flat yet cozy beds for her with lots of warmth.

I will keep y'all posted! Thank you again!!!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. Alison you're doing GREAT, promise. I know it seems like this day will last forever but when it's over you'll be able to breathe and life will go on and it will be pawesome when all this is behind you. Focus on all of the good that will result from this very difficult decision, know that she is still the same dog and she will be happy and feel good when the recovery is over. You can do it!

I'm glad you read the books, thank you for checking them out.

Keep us posted.

Hi Alison

Good job Mama Bear!  I know it's hard, my heart sunk when they took Jersey Girl away.  I'm sure I was projecting emotions but I felt like her eyes were screaming PLEASE DON'T LEAVE ME MAMA!.  Jersey Girl had her surgery this past Friday, Jan 3rd, so we're only a little ahead of you in the process.  She's had a rough recovery but we're seeing little wins and slow but steady progress every day.   She was in the hospital almost 4 full days (not typical) and didn't walk or eat much until she got home.  Now she's definitely eating (home-cooked food her Papa Bear makes her like fish, ribs, eggs and veggies plus a little canned food her and there) and walking several steps at a time roughly 3 times a day.  Slower than a lot of dogs but I'll take the baby steps as long as it continues to move in the right direction!

We're in LA too and I didn't even notice an earthquake last night!  Must have been too tired, lol.  Call me if you want to chat and compare experiences.  I'm right here in West LA, near Santa Monica.  310-948-1688 (c)

We'll be thinking of you, sending out positive healing energy and praying for both of you today and for the coming weeks!!!

Thank you all for the prayers and healing energy... I am going stir crazy here. Sweaty palms, racing heart. My friends tell me it's my stress drive in overload.

She hasn't gone in yet - they are doing some tests to ensure she is healthy enough to withstand the surgery (since she's already been on chemo). Her red blood is a little high which they *think* should be fine. There were some nodules on her lungs. They are waiting for the clear from the radiologist but that was over an hour and half ago. I don't want to keep calling but I literally am about to go seriously bat crazy. I have a huge lump in my throat. I should probably eat.

I am replaying our last conversation (mine and the surgeon, not mine and Shelby) in my head and I think she still felt confident she could do this today. Our only other option, with as much pain as she's in, is to do radiation on her which is really a bandaid - not a fix.

I will check in later... but for now,  this has got to be the most torturous day of my life .... the waiting.

Still waiting. ... nodules aren't good BUT her oncologist and surgeon think we should proceed with the surgery since it's the only chance she has to be pain-free. The oncologist also thinks she can treat the nodules (non-conclusive but they assume cancer). crying

We are waiting on the call from the cardiologist to make sure her heart is good. My nerves are SHOT today. This has quickly become one of the worst days of my life (second to losing my father).

AT this point, I will be off work before they even start the surgery but I am still going right there so I can be there when she wakes up. She won't come home until Friday but they have visiting hours and I've done that before and it's been beneficial for her. Trying to find my inner strength. I know it is in there somewhere... but waiting for my phone to ring is torture. This is clearly more complicated than we all though.

What a roller coaster day! I feel like I have been posting a ton so I'm sorry. Thank you for reading all the updates if you are! I didn't want to start new threads over and over. But then again, I am not really myself today.

Shelby went for surgery at 3 (PST). Her heart got the all clear. So now I wait. I want to go see her tonight - no matter how drugged she is. They have visiting hours so I might be able to get in. For now, I am going to leave work shortly and attempt to drive home as distracted as I am.  My stress levels were through the roof today. I am thanking my lucky stars I am a marathon runner and have a very strong heart in general. Like mother like daughter!

Thank you!

Alison,

I can understand that stress you have been under.  Please post as much as you like here.  It helps and others have been in the same boat you are. One of the things on this journey you have to practice is BREATHE.  That is important and it helps the stress.  Take a deep breath & let it out slowly.

Let us know how things are going & keep us posted

Hugs
