Shelby gets her stitches out today and I am really hopeful that we can return to a more normal life (aka, would love her to sleep in my bedroom again but I get that the bathroom is her 'safe' zone). However, I do think I heard some snoring near me last night around 1:30 a.m. - unless I could seriously hear that from the bathroom! So I think she was in my room for a bit. 🙂

She was a shaking mess this a.m. on her way to the vet and wouldn't even eat the treats they have there (which she loves) so I suspect she is over the whole vet thing and probably thinks she is there to stay - again. They did weigh her and she lost 2 pounds since her amp; which seems odd since she's done no exercise, that leg couldn't have weighed that much and she's been eating (I think) more treats than usual. Now I worry that I am restricting her food too much since I worry that she'll get fat! I think I found the 2 pounds though - on my hips and thighs! :-) Also, she doesn't feel like a 22 pound dog when I carry her up and down the stairs!

She also gets her last round of chemo today (since she was already well into chemo treatment for hemangioscarcoma before we made the decision to amputate her leg. Big day for Shelby. Big day for mom. I should be used  to this by now (after 7 months) but it never gets easier to drop her at the vet (even though her favorite nurse will spoil her today)! I'll be anxious till I go back to get her and we can finally start our cone-free, stitches free, life!!!

O,ay, Shelby's sneak g ito the bedroom at night...that's good t hear! She'll get back iinto her normal routne more and more and fell more and mre secure asher confidence contiues to build. Your c fidence has certanl grown too!

I'm sorry she's lost her "zest" for going t the vet. With everything that sweet brave girl has gone through, I don't blame her one bit.

Now, this is just my penny's worth, but I would i increase her food intake...two pounds in two weeks for a little girl not exercising may need more calories.

Cone free! YAAAAAAAY!clap

Stitch free! YAAAAAAY!clap

Chemo free! YAAAAAAY!clap

Will look forward to her update when she cmes home!

EXTRA, EXTRA, EXTRA treats and a big huge supper vor Shelby tonight! And mom gets EXTRA wine! Good job !clap

This is MOMENTOUS! Congratulations on the next hop in your journey.

As for the leg, that's a popular topic of discussion around here. What does that spare leg really weigh? No idea but I've seen a few people here say their larger dogs lost 5 pounds right after surgery. I think it's entirely possible that Shelby's limb weighed 2 lbs.

Good luck today, I hope you have a good visit (or as good as they get in Shelby's eyes!)

Awe.... thank you all!!!

Sally and Happy Hannah - definitely I am cooking for her tonight! 🙂

I guess it's possible that leg was 2 pounds but WOW... I think I reduced her food a tad much too. I get worried about her being chunky on 3 legs!

Her vet called to let me know that Shelby is being a delight and a perfect angel, running around, happy and NOTHING like the drama queen I had been calling and complaining about! Isn't that how kids always are? Good for everyone else except their parents? Sigh. That girl of mine!!! The best part was that her surgeon seemed really pleased w/how she was hopping around and looks overall.

Feeling a little bit more at ease even though I do know in about 3 days (just in time for the weekend of course) she will do her 3-day post chemo dragging, not wanting to eat unless hand-fed, and overall lethargicness. But at least I am prepared and used to this and I'll throw some chicken in the crockpot for her!

And yes, I finally worked a bit on her blog. Shelby has always been one of the most photographed pooches I know so I'll try and get some of her pre-amp cuteness up there. Not that she's not cute now (I tell her daily that I think she's beautiful and how proud I am of her - whether she understands or not is another story) but we do have some seriously cute and fun photos!

Oh and she's getting a bath this weekend because she is seriously stinky paws right now! Oh and I forgot - the best part of our day together yesterday was when I put her up in my bed w/me for a quick nap - she winced at first so maybe I hurt her where her stitches/wound were (but I really just had her chest against me) but she got cozy and we had a good snuggle like old times!!! Happy day!

Yay for Shelby!! She will be back to her old routine in no time! She sounds just like Polly as far as the vet hospital goes, now. Polly is now so terrified of going to the oncologist office, we are not going to stress her out any more by going there. They were awesome, but want as stress-free a life as possible for her. My regular vet will take care of her from now on. We've done everything we can possibly do anyway with the oncologist.

The leg thing is kind of amusing.......We had Polly's leg sent for private cremation, but had to determine the weight first. After her amputation, her surgeon placed her leg in a cremation box, and we had to take it to our regular vet to weigh and send to the pet crematory. All of us in my vet's office, guessed at the weight before we actually weighed it to see who was closest......my husband won! The weight of it was a little over 3 lbs, but the surgeon did have to remove quite a bit of her shoulder tissues, muscle, nodes etc to send for biopsies. I couldn't stand the thought of her leg being removed and discarded, so we opted for private cremation. Made my heart feel greatly comforted through this whole ordeal. The surgeon and her techs said I was the first client to ever ask for a private cremation on a limb.

Best wishes to you and Shelby going forward.

Oh how funny! I'm not sure I could handle carrying a leg in a box, you're pretty brave! But how sweet of you to ask for the private cremation. I think we've had one or two folks do that here so you're in good company.

That is so interesting about the leg and cremation. I planned to do that w/Shelby (when she crosses the rainbow bridge) but didn't think about her leg. They are still running some tests on it.

Well Shelby had a big day yesterday for sure. All day at the vet - not at all acting like the psycho mutt she acts at home. They adjusted her last chemo because of the lung mets but she might get one more treatment but either way, she was feeling good. She was shaking so hard though. She's got to be so completely over being at the vet right now.

And true to form, brought her home, she ate dinner and put herself to bed - in my bathroom. She will now only come out for food. I TRY so hard to let it go and not let it bug me but it makes me sad. Is this her new life? Is she really happy? Can her amp site hurt still at all? I think I patted her booty and she winced so I think I must have touched her where she has some nerves or something.

But she did walk up and down the stairs for the first time post-amp - on her own. I still carry her though. 🙂

Trying to focus on our little victories ...

Stairclimbing? Are you kidding me? That' a HUGE VICTORY!! HUGE! Hapoy Hannah is eleven months post op and movng forward (knocking on wood over here) and has only gone up the outside steps a couple of times ...and I filmed them both! And the frst time was at seven months post amp!

I'm sure the bathroom is especially appealing to her when she just gets back from the vets. And IF she has to have another chemo (is this already six? Cause I've not jeard of doing more than six, and most stop at five. I'm certainly no vet snd Shelby's whole situation is "unique" to sa the least!), maybe they could arrange it on a day you could wait while it's done rather than have to leave her all day. You'll be in and out within twenty-thirty minutes.

She has come into yor bedroom some, right? Have you tried lifting her n the bed for snuggles and tumm rubs a d then lifting her down? Maybe she'l find it so enjoyable that she'll ait by the bed and wait for ore.

The amp site is still sore or she wouldn't yelp...but two weeks out it is normal to still be sore some. The surgery site could still cause disco fort this early on. Maybe in the bathroom she feels like she doesn't jave to move much and she's re oved herself from being bumped into...or bumping i to anythi g herself. Vut yeah still g with the flow! It works for her fr whatever reason!

I'm just so glad she's feeling good and wa ts to eat and go potty. Maybe she can be "vet free" for awhile nw and give her time to get over the trauma. Is she aoff all meds now, including the dogy valium?

CNGRATULATINS again o stitches out AND stair climbing!! clap

Extra treats and extra hugs!

You might be right - she might still be a tad sore on the amp site (reminding myself it is 2 weeks - today!!!). The bathroom seems to be her safe zone where she can be uninterrupted yet still see what I am doing and what's going on (which is nothing since I live alone). I got stuck at home due to traffic today and we snuggled for a bit on the couch - and she did snuggle w/me on my bed. My fear is that she will jump down and hurt herself since  I still don't 100% believe all those other legs are that stable since she kind of wobbles when she walks or first gets up. She looks stiff but perhaps that is because I  am used to the OLD way she used to walk before all this crazyness started.

I know -we did 6 rounds of chemo and she'll go back for a chest X-ray in 3 weeks and perhaps ONE more round of a different kind or just start her maintenance drugs. Still waiting for a definitive diagnosis on the cancer in the leg - but you're 100% right - nothing about this journey has been normal. Even her doctors said that. And they said she's a fighter (which she is).

I gave her a doggy valium last night just because she seemed a little high strung (due to being at the vet all day). Normally I bring her there and stay w/her so in and out in about 45 min but since she had to have her stitches out, I just had her spend the whole day there and I know she got lots of snuggles and loves!

Thank you - the stairs are a big step for her!!! She took them like a champ! I still help her when she poos to hold that amp side up but she doesn't really need me to do that anymore. She is also peeing much better now too. Dogs are amazing!

Here are some photos!

She was shaking at the vet so I picked her up to calm her down. You can see her pretty tongue hanging out of her mouth! But she knows who her mama is for sure!

Some morning snuggles when I was stuck at home due to traffic. She was peaceful until I had to move her and I guess I touched something that hurt. I am sure her neck and front legs are more sore since they carry more of the weight. I am going to research how to give her some mini-massages. I carry my stress there too!

Jerry, you are right.....I could not do the carrying of the leg, my husband had to do it. I forgot to also mention that when we got to our regular vet to weigh and have the leg sent out for cremation, that my vet tech friend said the leg was laid out so nice, that it was better than most entire bodies of pets being laid out in their burial boxes that she has ever seen! I figured if we didn't find just a bit of humor in this whole situation, I'd go crazy with all the stress from everything we'd been through during the year. So the little bit of humor with the leg eased quite a bit of anxiety for me.

MomtoShelby......going up and down stairs by herself is a fantastic accomplishment. Just give her some time on the other things, she will get back to a bit more normal in her routine. Polly still has some difficulty on steps, but unfortunately, she had difficulty as a 4-legged girl. We just look at it as normal, but are a bit more careful, especially in the snow.
Keeping you and Shelby in our thoughts.

Well I'm glad to hear that something good can result from bad traffic. Wow!

Fear not, I'm going to bet that little by little she will start venturing out into the world and leave the safety of her bathroom den behind. She is making a ton of progress, we can read it in your posts. It's hard to see when you're in the middle of it and not seeing her old self yet, but she really is moving along beautifully.

Did you see my links I posted recently about doggie massage tips?

Thank you Sally and Happy Hannah! Your enthusiasm always makes me SMILE soooooo big! Yup, we're pretty bonded and she knows me pretty well. Even when I try and be 'strong', I am guessing she is getting some sense of some anxiety I have somewhere internally! 🙂

Bonnie - that is exactly why I have to laugh about the bathroom - for a dog that hates baths, hates confinement, hates any sort of restrictive behavior, to put herself in the bathroom? It's become a running joke w/my friends so I do try and see the humor after all this because in life, you have to just laugh sometimes! (and drink wine or eat more chocolate).

Shelby is pretty much true to a terrier in that she is very strong-willed and will let me know what she will (and will not) do - thus refusing to leave the bathroom. At least she makes a bit more room for me now. I did close the door earlier a bit to force her out but that made her sad so I figured I'll let her do this on her time. I am glad you can all see the progress but this has been a toughie for me but I do see others where the recovery, even w/stitches out, was longer than just the 2 week rest period!

Thank you for the links on the massage. I am going to try and give her a mini chest/upper body/front leg massage later. I suspect that is where she is the most sore. Her remaining hind leg does have some arthritis in it from YEARS of jumping so it doesn't always look straight (which also stresses me out). So tonight will be wine, massage and snuggles! 🙂 kiss

Definitely a finicky girl today and really stiff. I blame her being active/'on' all day at the vet yesterday. Her front limbs seemed stiff when she was getting up and she wouldn't put her one paw down at first but she had so she could walk. BUT I also know the vet would never have told me she was doing great or let her come home yesterday if there was anything to be concerned with. Our dinner tonight was hardly healthy (1/2 a hot dog, cookies, some pure pumpkin and acorn squash) but I think her new chemo made her a little nauseous. So I'm hoping she's going to settle herself soon.

BUT look what came in the mail?!? She wanted to model it for you all! :-) I LOVE my little tripawd!
