So Bud is 8 months post amp. He has no hip or rear hind leg. All that is left there is just a small nub. Some tissue so that if he would like to lay on that side or straight there is a little bit of cushioning.

Anyway, about a month ago  I noticed an "aroma" about him. I bathed and groomed him. Being a golden he had some clumps that I removed including over the hip/ amp site where he finally has grown hair. Some of the clumps I cut off were a bit stinky. Well, he was still stinky so I bathed him twice a week. Well, I finally figured out that it is the hair on and around his nub that stinks. The skin is pink under the hair and there is no redness, wound, puss, etc.

I called the vet today. He said it could be a yeast infection (Bud is low thyroid too) but if it were it would be itchy and bother him. It doesn't seem to bother him at all. He also said it could be a build up off oils. So, he told me to lather him up with an oatmeal based shampoo and leave it on there for about ten minutes, then to rinse. I'm suppose to try this for a few days. If it continues to stink, I need to bring him.

So I am just wondering...since no topic seems to be unpost worthy....Does any other tripawd have a stinky nub? What did you do about it and what seemed to be the cause?????

Well this is a first... Wyatt's nub is no stinkier than the rest of him! Perhaps something in Bud's diet has changed that may be causing the odor.

Well, this is a new one, I wish I had an answer for you but I don't.  But good luck keeping that shampoo on for 10 minutes.

geesh, is it a chance that it might be an anal gland that exploded??  they can be stinky, and maybe it 'expressed itself' by the way he has to sit on his 'tiny hiney'...  just a guess...  good luck with your baths, we are curious as to the answers you get!!

I'm guessing with Charon- anal gland.  I know the pugs anal gland 'stuff' is really stinky.  They sometimes express the gland by scooting on their butts- does Bud do that? Or does he sit on his amp side?  Maggie always sat on her amp side.   Maybe the 'stuff' gets on the fur on his amp side since there is no leg there to keep it, um, in the anal area.

Enjoy your breakfast everyone!

Gotta say, it's never boring here... laughing

Rio doesn't have a stinky nub -- she's worn the hair off of it -- but T gets the peee-ew butt. She's had troubles with yeast infections on her skin and in her ears in the past (goldens are notorious for skin issues) and they definitely smell weird. They also are incredibly itchy. Same with lady part infections -- which she's also had. When she starts needing a mining helmet because she's up in her butt so much, we start treating with antibiotics/anti-fungal creams... Since we took the grains out of her diet, though, we haven't really had any more issues with the ears and the lady parts. We've been pretty lucky not to have anal gland issues on top of the other stinky business, I guess.

Hope you figure out the source of Bud's stink.

You best watch out MBVP

Vegas is ONLY 13 hour ride from here and my pawrents have been known to travel there…….

I may just have to sit on you…stinky nub(cause it still stinks) and all!!!! You will then become incompassitated…..and no longer able to torment tripawds….

This may just work out and be a secret and highly effective weapon for the AMBF……

Guess I better test it out  on Daisy…before I get the folks packed up!!!

heh heh heh

Update time.....

So can you imagine how hard it is to sit straight faced while one's vet is down on all fours...sniffing your dog's nub??? ( yep, just like another dog would) ....Well, not as hard as it is...when he asks his wife with a better sniffer to come and join him!

Those poor folks...WOW!

That took some sincere dedication and as the receptionist said "that's definately facebook worthy! Where's the camera?"

So if that already grossed you out please STOP reading here...

Anyway for those of you brave enough to continue, the Doc couldn't really identify the odor. He looked all over the skin...sniffing EVERYwhere and could not find any signs of infection anywhere.

Kudos to Charon and Karen who apparently guessed correctly....

He expressed the anal gland and there was a small blockage. He thinks that maybe because of the way Bud has to balance and position himself "while taking care of business" the leakage from the gland dripped onto the nub. Because there wasn't much in the gland the Doc couldn't be definate about his diagnosis. He sprayed the "posterior and nub" with some kind of stink be gone spray.

I am to wait 5 days to see if the stink is gone. If not, we have to go back ....

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Okay, but those anal glands are no joke!  Comet had one rupture.  It was cleaned out which is like surgery.  6 months later it ruptured again and I made the doctor remove them at that time!  It was expensive anal glands!

Well, I'm very glad it was nothing for Bud.  Hooray for a stinky buttkiss!

On the bright side your vet got a Bud sized dog to sniff!!  I'm trying to imagine my vet getting low enough to sniff a pug butt laughing.

I hope the mystery is solved.

I am picturing the dog-ter sniffing. Pawsatively humiliating. On the upside, no infections. Butt, can I just say as a human -- anal glands are just gross. Yuk. Glad it's not something worse, though.
