I am freaking out here ... I just got home from running and Shelby cannot stand on her remaining rear leg. This is my worst fear - she loses feeling in that rear leg. She was fine this morning ... maybe a little lame and I was going to increase her metacam since she might have been a bit painful. She's been moving slower but I attributed it to the chemo and have been massaging her leg. Maybe I did it wrong? I fed her breakfast and then she just went down and could not get back up. She will eat for me and wag her tail... any thoughts? I am rushing her to the ER vet right now but I am scared to death. This cannot be it for us. I am not ready. She still wants to fight. I know she does. Please help! Give me the truth ...

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Alison, try not to worry too much, get her to the vet and have her evaluated.......remember that she is 13, and her remaining leg just may not be as strong anymore, but she will let you know if and when SHE is ready.......I know a setback of any kind is scary, but just hang in there and I know you and Sweet Shelby can conquer just about anything that comes along. Have her vets ever said anything about a leg brace for her back leg? I really don't know much about this, but it may be something to consider if it is a possibility. Princess Shelby is a very strong girl, as well as her mom, you will get through this.

Keeping you and Shelby in my thoughts and prayers today, sending a ton of positive energy, and please let us know what is going on......

Alison, I am just going to say "ditto" to everything Bonnie said.  I couldn't have said it better.  Saying prayers and keeping pawsitive thoughts for you and Shelby.

Hugs,

Amy & Spirit Libby

Liberty (Libby) was diagnosed with OSA on 1-22-13.  Right front amputation on 1-31-13. No IV Chemo. Metronomic Therapy started 2-19-13 along with supplements and some home cooking. Lungs clear until 1-06-14.  She's still her happy, hoppy, bossy self.  Living the dog life to the fullest and a proud Winter Warrior. :) RIP my Libby 4-21-03 to 3-19-14

thank you BOTH... we dodged a bullet this time. It's nothing more than a super tight quad. There is nothing like seeing your dog, that wouldn't walk, come RUNNING to see you after getting a massage from the on-call doctor. He showed me the proper way to do it and we're going to put some heat on it and I'll watch her today. Of course she is ALWAYS a happy, happy princess when spending my money at the ER! 🙂

I'm a runner - I should know proper stretching and muscle pain but in a dog, I didn't know. I massaged around where he showed me and it was very tight but she's not in pain (which is great). He did say he thought PT would be good for her (where am I going to find the time - truly) and maybe swimming. I'll do whatever for Shelby but my wallet is getting maxed out with her challenges.

But the good news is that this is not cancer related, this is lack of proper stretching and massage work (and I thought I was doing a good job but clearly I was not). Prayers answered today - the ER vet usually sees me pretty calm but today I arrived in tears. I feel better now; albeit exhausted, feel like a train hit me and am going to have to work at home. Thank you again! Shelby is a strong girl!

Whew! OMD you had ME freaking out. Glad she's fine.

Yep, massages can do wonders, especially in senior dogs. If you're anywhere close to Cal Animal Rehab, they're the BEST!

ALISON!! WHEEEEEEEEEEW! We all are exhaling that huge sigh of relief right with you girl!!

Bless her heart!! And yours too! I kow the fear had to be debilitating!! Of course, Miss Shelby didn't seem too concerned...that's what Princesses do.....leave the worrying toothers!!
Quick story....Barrett's mom rushed him to ve... when woke up that morning could not stand...(front leg amp)...by time got to vet, Barret was walking fine. After thorough check, vet decided the leg had simply "gone to sleep"! Another person's dog...something similar along with yelping and leg ki d of looked "contorted"... vet determined it was a leg/muscle cramp!

Sooooo glad our SHELBYSTRONG is okay now! Maybe carrying her up the stairs for a few days may help reduce the muscle stress while it's healing.

You are such a good Mom!!

HUGS! HUGS! And more HUGS!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Alison, what a way to start the day, eh?  Glad it wasn't anything big.  Hope the rest of the day is more relaxing.  Scratch Shelby behind an ear for me.

Adelaide is a young tripawd Husky, from an injury.  Her amp was on 10/1/12.  She has 4 sisters, Aissa (a senior border collie/chow), Maggie May (a puppy Great Pyrenees), Mathilde and Morrigan and 1 baby brother, Bagheera.  We are all watched over by our angel Brendol, who was dx with OSA 1/30/13, amp on 2/6/13, and left us on 8/20/13.

Sally - thank you for these stories ... they give me (and I am sure others) a source of comfort as we all know too well dealing with a dog with cancer - any scare like this sends us off the deep end. It is good to know other's have been through this and come out the other side. The look on the vet's face was priceless - he was amused by her antics (me, not so much). I knew she had to be OK, she was desperately trying to get up and she didn't seem scared that she couldn't (which would have indicated pain to me) but rather she was annoyed.

I did massage her quite a bit and am working at home w/her today. She's sound asleep in the bathroom. I am ignoring her room of choice since I know she was probably a bit stressed at the vet in general. I've been carrying her up and the stairs for a few weeks now since I saw her launch herself off the last step and lose her rear footing and I was like, no more of that. I dont' mind carrying her up and down the stairs - it helps my biceps! 🙂

I gave her some heat therapy earlier and I think she liked that. My personal PT reached out and told me that some of the tools I use on my own quads could be used for Shelby too (and called her the mini me).

Thank you all for your words of comfort! sorry for the early a.m. scare but I freaked out! I need more coffee. I don't need that kind of emotional outburst before 8 a.m. for reals!

Well, she is STILL in the bathroom but at least she can't get into trouble in there. I am trying SO hard to be 'more dog' today and look at what we have that's going good for us today.

1. Shelby WILL eat - in fact, when I was making lunch, she came into the kitchen to beg (like normal). I have a yoga mat in there now so she won't slide.

2. She wanted to go outside and once we were out, she stumbled a bit but was able to pee (she lost some of her footing but she's got it). She then tried to walk a bit longer but I stopped her and carried her back upstairs.

3. I made an appt with the PT place we went to pre-amp (Two Hands / Four Paws). Sadly they can't see us till next Saturday since I cannot go during the week next week as I have a HUGE event for work and my boss will not be keen on me taking time off (working at home is probably pushing my limits but I said I had a plumping emergency).

4. I found some videos on massage and rehab for rear-amps and will work on her muscles. I will try and massage her for 10 - 15 minutes a few times a day - even if it means getting up earlier or missing a workout.

5. I am still going to go out to dinner w/a friend tonight. Shelby is at no risk for harming herself since she doesn't seem to leave the bathroom and I need a break.

I am exhausted today. I want a nap. I want a good cry. I want a hug. I want MORE chocolate. I wake up several times a night - looking for my dog (that is new). I know she wants to fight and that this has nothing to do with her cancer but I feel awful that she was having discomfort (I guess - they tell me she's not in pain and I don't think she is) and I didn't do PT or anything else for her. I just gave her glucosomene and hoped that would help her joints but the way she is walking right now is like me post-marathon. All gimpy and looks like any one of her legs will go out. It breaks my heart to see her like this and yet she looks at me, wags her tail and seems to say, I still love you, mommy!!! And I swear to GOD - the next person (stranger) who says to me; what happened to her leg, follow-up with how old is she (13) followed up with the, oh, she's an old dog anyways, is going to get PUNCHED! She is NOT an old dog - she is a young spirit in a senior's body and she has a shit-ton of fighting left to do!!! Sorry for the potty mouth.... and the venting ... I needed to get that off my chest. I swear, she knows when I am angry typing .... lol

So now she's reverse sneezing ... I called her oncologist and they don't think it has anything to do with her treatments or her lung mets (I swear, it sounds like she is trying to swallow really hard). She's shaking too. They told me something might be up her nose! WTF? How did anything get up her nose? She hasn't gone anywhere today? She sounds wheezy and perhaps she does have a virus or a cold or something ... if this is not the lung mets.

Has anyone had this? Any tips for helping her? Does she need a hot compress or a steam bath? She won't eat now... but she's spooked. From having limited mobility to this ... rough day for my girl. They told me to try and stay calm. Yeah right.
