Yes, ditto the advice Denise gave on the Gabapentin. I'm glad you're adding that into the mix. If that ine "yelping out of the blue" was related to phantom li.b pain, the Gabapentin should take care of that.
As far as the restlessness, panting, whining, etc. last night, I can tell you my Happy Hannah did that for the first three nights and it was tearing me apart! It was almost twenty hours before she would lay down or sit more than just a few minutes. She didn't even lay on her amp. side for five weeks!!!
Check with the vet of course, but keep his pain meds consistent. The Gaba was, if I recall, approximately every twelve hours with Happy Hannah and the Tramadol every eight hours...and sometimes every six hours if the pain seemed to kick in at the six hour mark.
I KNOW this is hard to watch. It IS major surgery and it hurts!! In the scheme of things, these few days of discomfort will be well worth it once you see the sparkle come back...and you will!!!
Hang in there! You are doing a great job!! Stay connected!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
So sorry to hear Charlie (and you guys) had a rough night....I'm sure you were terrified! Hopefully you get the med combo/timing figured out and things will go more smoothly. Sometimes it seems like it takes a bit of tweaking to get the right fit for your dog...every one of the is an individual when it comes to recovery. And the journey can be one step forward, two steps back, but you'll get there eventually.

Nitro 11 1/2 yr old Doberman; right front amp June 2014. Had 6 doses carboplatin, followed by metronomic therapy. Rocked it on 3 legs for over 3 years! My Warrior beat cancer, but couldn't beat old age. He crossed the Bridge peacefully on July 25, 2017, with dignity and on his terms. Follow his blog entitled "Doberman's journey"

Charlie update! The shivering has stopped, the pain has mostly stopped. He is more himself everyday which is wonderful to see. We however did notice that his back right leg is really sore from the extra work it takes to hop along, nothing a little rubbing and ice can't fix though.
Glad to hear things are looking up...hang in there, each day will get a little better. I'm sure massages will be greatly appreciated!

So glad to hear Charlie is feeling better! And his sparkle will continue to come back even more everyday!
Yeah, it takes a whole lot of muscle adjusting to walk on three legs. Even though the dogs outwardly seem to adapt pretty quickly, the muscles and joints inwardly are really getting a work out. Slow and easy Charlie, slow and easy.
Thanks for the update! We're cheering for ya' Charlie!!
Hugs to all!

Awesome! That's really great to hear. And yes, some massage, ice packs and TLC will go a long way at this stage, nice job! Hope you're having a relaxing weekend.

Stretching, massage, PROM (Passive range Of Motion) exercises, balance work and weight bearing exercises are a big help too! Find lots of professional tips and how-to videos in Loving Life On Three Legs or search all blogs here for other helpful posts and videos.
