Chance's rabie's vaccine ironically expired the day after his amputation. He is starting chemo next Wednesday (Oct 9). The surgeon thought it was ok to give it but should I bypass the vaccine altogether? Does he really need it and isn't it to be given in "healthy" dogs?
Chance is a 10ish Shetland Sheepdog Mix who was rescued from the shelter in January of 2013 and diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in September of 2013. He had a front left amputation and 6 rounds of carboplatin. He had a great 11 months and was diagnosed with lung mets on 8/23/14. He was released to the bridge on 8/28/14.
You ask a really great question. It always amazes us that so many vets are still OK with giving an immune-compromised animal a slew of vaccines without even questioning it. Our own vet thought it was OK as well but something in our gut told us to do more research and we opted out.
You do have the option now of getting a rabies waver for licensing purposes, if your vet will write a note about Chance being immune-compromised.
Here is some information that may help.

"Okay, with that out of the way, let’s look at the situation like rationale, clear thinking human beings. The situation is not clear cut, and that recognition should be established early.
For those who want the bottom line now: No vaccinations for dogs with cancer. None. Vaccinations have complex interactions with the immune system and these are not predictable and can be harmful in dogs with cancer. Use the minimum vaccinations for your pet’s lifestyle, needs, and other health issues.
But don’t eliminate all vaccinations in healthy pets."

I know Dr Boyer told us no to all vaccinations like the parvo, distemper etc. We were going to revisit the rabies one because Sassy's wasn't due until December. But I was going to try to have her write me a letter just for that reason. I agree and Dr Boyer agreed to no vaccinations for immune compromised dogs
