Proceeding with chemo when lymph node metastasis is detected?

Our wonderful, handsome, life-loving 3 year old boxer, Viggo, was diagnosed with Osteo. Had his right rear leg amputated two weeks ago. When we went in for an oncology consult they found that a lymph node in his abdomen is affected. Now we're not sure if it makes sense to proceed with chemo. We were all set to, and now we don't know.

This boy has been through so much. He had a dorsal laminectomy to fix a problem with his spine mid-June (lumbrosacral stenosis, collapsed disc, sciatic pain, significant muscle atrophy). He never stopped limping after this surgery. Then they found the tumor in his knee--the same leg that was affected by the spinal issues.

Now two weeks after the amputation he's finally regaining some of his spunky self. Which makes it harder to think about putting him through more medical stuff and possibly making him feel crappy again.

On the other hand, if we don't do something now it sounds like odds are he only has 2 months left. We've never met a dog who loves life, people, and other dogs as much as he does. Our whole village is literally concerned about him, calling and sending little presents. All because he has shown so many creatures so much love.

We really really don't want to say goodbye. This disease is just devastating :(

If any one has experience or advice with this kind of situation, please share, we are so confused.

Thank you!

Hi Louise and Viggo, welcome. First off, let's celebrate that he's ROCKIN and doing so great on 3! YAY!

It's not at all uncommon for a situation like this to happen during osteosarcoma care and treatment. Sometimes cancer in the lymph node is found, other times a met might be present. But that doesn't necessarily mean that doing chemotherapy is futile, or that his days are more numbered. My first question is, what did your oncologist recommend?

Keep in mind that you will always hear statistics like that, and those will stick in your mind most. But when it comes down to it, no dog has an expiration date stamped on their butt. Numbers don't take into account Viggo or his health, they don't tell the whole story or predict what will happen to him.

We've seen many dogs outlive those prognosis even when a situation like this happens, and we've seen others who had a picture perfect post-op situation with no other problems and they didn't live up to the statistics. So it's a gamble, but you just have to go with your gut instinct and hope for the best.

Here's a couple of Boxer Tripawd stories to make your day:

Thank you very much Jerry, for the encouraging words. Almost everyone else we speak to (who are not involved or invested) seem to think chemo is a bad idea. There are definitely many negative opinions out there about it.

We have decided not to listen. He's so young and full of life, we can afford it (with pet insurance, thank God for that!)--and we think we would regret it if we didn't try.

Plus, his oncologist thinks there's a chance it can prolong his life--and possibly make him more comfortable if we can shrink the tumor in his lymph node. Still, her sense was that we're probably not looking at the full year--which is I guess is the standard prognosis without lymph node involvement.

Viggo is scheduled for his first chemo tomorrow morning.

PS: Thank you for sharing Sarge and Roxy's stories. Viggo wants to join those superstars 🙂

PPS: And yes! He is doing great on three. Especially seeing that he just had back surgery too. He had his first longish hopping walk today which did wonders for his mood!

Yay! You joined AND uploaded an avatar of his handsome mug!

"Join" those superstars? Viggo IS a superstar! superstar

For a pup his age, why not try it if you know he has the temperament for it and you have the insurance? Oh my gosh that is a situation that many people would be so grateful to be in. As for anyone who gives their opinion when they've never even been in this situation, well that's nice they care enough to tell you but on the other hand you just have to do what's right for YOU and VIGGO. You two are the only ones who matter.

We'll be thinking of you tomorrow so keep us posted. Oh and do tell how Viggo got his name, I love it!

Just a quick "shout out" to you and Viggo and sending lots of love and support!

You've .made a plan to proceed. A plan that definitely could, not inly give him extended time, but extended QUALITY!! Viggo could care less about days on a calendar, but sure does like the idea of good quality time with you!

He sounds like a very determined fella who definitely intends on enjoying life on his terms! I know he enjoyed his walk and doing something "normal". That makes everyone feel good!

Look forward to an update as soon as yoj can catch your breath! Would love to see more pictures. His avatar ohoto is soooooo cute!!!

Sending love and hugs!

Hi All,

Thank you for the encouraging words. Where Viggo's name comes from... I am originally from Denmark and Viggo is a common name. It doesn't hurt that it's also the name of famous Danish actor Viggo Mortensen (see Lord of the Rings, Hidalgo, and many more). Plus, boxers in my family must have a name that ends with an O. It's our thing. My last boy was named Bruno. My sister's pup is named Hugo. 🙂

Update: Viggo had his first chemo treatment on Friday. It went very well. He seems to be tolerating it. Still has a good appetite, no problems in the poop department either (which is a big thing for him), and his energy has continued to increase over the weekend. Spent time in the yard helping us plant. By laying on the new plants. He even got out of his chair yesterday to lay on my feet while I was cooking. A deeply ingrained habit that we haven't seen in a long while.

We are also working with an alternative vet. This week we are starting slowly with some supplements as well. Slowly so that we can tell which he's not tolerating if he has a reaction. Vitamin A/B is first. Then the plan is to add Hoxsey w/ boneset, and then Artemesia (sweet wormwood). After that we'll probably be close to his second chemo if all goes well.

The oncologist recommended adding Palladia in three weeks also...if the tumor in his lymph node hasn't responded to the first round. That makes me a little scared. Throwing so much at him. But. We have to take it a day at the time.

Right now it's just great to see him take an interest in things again. Yesterday he actually fetched a ball from the other side of the yard! And Friday he is cleared to swim in the pool again (if he wants to). Those are the things to look forward to.

Here are detailed steps for adding photos to forum posts .

Yes, the image must be hosted somewhere online. If you do not already share photos somewhere, you can start a free Tripawds blog and upload them there!

Isn't that THE best feeling...seeing our dogs return to some of their "normal" routines/habits? And it keeps getting better!!

You are doing everything possible for Viggo and never lose sight of that! It's great how you are introducing his "supplements" slowly to makes sure there are no tummy upsets.

Continue to savor and enjoy every single moment and let NOTHING interfere with your time together! Take lots of pictures and videos...we love pictures around here!! Someone reminded me to take some with my Happy Hannah and I together, as well as photos of her just doing normal, everyday things. It was great advice!

As you said...one day at a rime! You don't need to clutter your mind with the "next" treatment or "next" appointmend...just continue to enjoupy the NOW!! Viggo sure is!!!

Now go play fetch with Viggo and watch how happy it makes him!! His sparkle will continue to come back more and more.clap

Love to all!

I do not much to add, except to say hello and offer my support.  You know Viggio, which means you will do what is best for Viggio above all else.

Hi Eileen and handsome Viggo,

So sorry for this diagnosis in Viggo, especially with him being so young, but you have definitely found the best place to be. Our wonderful community is full of great knowledge, experience, and wisdom to help you through this unwanted journey.

Everyone has given so much great advice, so I don't have much to add except you are doing everything you possibly can for Viggo, and trying alternative treatments are absolutely worth trying as well as conventional treatments. There is no absolute right or wrong, just achieving a quality life for our beloved pups and kitties is what is most important.

Keep us updated on him when you can, and I will be keeping you and him in my thoughts,

Bonnie, Angel Polly, and new girls

And P.S. Like everyone has already mentioned, there is NO expiration date on our pups and kitties, so enjoy everyday, stay in the moments, and know that Viggo is not thinking about anything except the joy in the now, and being with you......  🙂
