Hi Guys! I've tried googling but you all are always so helpful to me so I was just wondering. Jilly was on Duramaxx for a while and then her new vet switched her to Previcox before her amputation and she was still on it after as well. When we went to the holistic vet she said she would like to get her off of that and to do a trial run which is what I have been doing since Thursday or Friday. But when we went last week to the regular vet to get her staples out he said she should be on it for the rest of her life. So I'm not really sure what to do.
She seems to be fine off of it. But she's still been panting a little bit off and on but isn't crying or moaning or anything. But I'm wondering if I should keep her off of it or on it. I think I liked the Duramaxx for her because I feel like it worked better. But I still worry about it messing with her organs (the previcox or duramaxx). I did give her a bath last night and picked her up close or on her incision and she did yelp ( I FELT AWFUL!!!!) but obviously she did have a limp amputated so I don't think it would feel 100% yet. And I did give her a Tramadol tonight because she was panting more than normal but we had friends over so she was walking around more than normal since the amputation.
So I'm just curious if you've chosen the holistic route, did you stick with the NSAID?
Thank you!!!!
Ya' know, and I'm just throwing this out there, don't know if you have to be a "purist" as far as eliminating all conventional meds.
Maybe you could still keep one or two, in conjunction with the holistic protocal. It will be interesting to see what others say who jave gone that route.
Sorry she's javing a bit of pain tonight, but glad she had a good time with all the visits!!
Hugs always!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Yea...I'm not against it at all. I just am so indecisive and then I have one dr saying yay and one saying nay....so I'm kind of just going bonkers over here! LOL
Murphy had Previcox and Tramadol after his amp and subsequent THR. That was almost two and a half years ago, though. Our surgeon was one of the top ortho surgeons, and we trusted his judgement where Murphy's recovery was concerned. Both meds were discontinued after Murphy was back to his "normal" self.
Why does your vet think that Previcox is a lifelong thing? Are you dealing with something other than the amp? Have you considered physical therapy with a certified rehab vet?
I do know that when switching from one drug to another, a washout period is required in order to keep the meds from a potentially bad interaction.
I guess it looks like I have more questions than answers, doesn't it?
Kathi and Murphy
Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!
UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

Hi Kathi! No, she has osteosarcoma and had the leg amputated. The holistic vet said that if I take her off of it, and there is no pain then to keep her off of it. But the regular vet just said to keep her on it and I really wasn't sure why. He just said to and I never really questioned it. But I'm thinking she was on it for the pain in the leg and the leg is gone so....
I haven't considered physical therapy but I also haven't really heard anything about it. Is that really expensive?
The washout period is 4 days I believe. That's what we had to do switching from duramaxx to previcox.
Questions are good! It makes me think!

HI
Good question because I was told the same thing two weeks ago and have also googled and am also confused.
So our vet said to keep Borris on Deramxx because it will help relieve swelling in remaining limbs, one, and two there has been research that says that this drug can help to keep mets small?? Is this true? I asked my vet what the longterm affects could be and he said that seeing we are doing chemo and will be doing bloodwork we can watch for any other problems. I just don't know.
As for the panting, the first week home Borris was panting, howling (talking to me) and sleepless. I took him off the tramadol after asking my vet and that seemed to do the trick for him. He slept much better without it, and was more himself. I continued full doses of Gabepentin and weaned him to twice a day and then at bedtime, and this week nothing.
If anyone can tell me what they did with the NSAID's I'd love to know.

Hmmm...that makes more sense. Now I'm really wondering what others did because if I should keep her on something, I need to order the Deramaxx because out current vet doesn't use that one so I need to get it online.
First off, I think that if you have two vets who don't agree on the same protocols, then for your own sanity (and that of your pack) why not work with the one you are most comfortable with? Sounds like your two vets will never see eye-to-eye and later on if you deal with a more serious situation it could really stress you out.
Never be shy about asking your vet questions. Here is some great information about how to be a good advocate for your pets:

Now to get to the point about the NSAIDS:
Yes, NSAIDS have been shown in many cases to have anti-tumor properties for dogs fighting cancer. They are typically recommended for dogs with cancer when combined with metronomic chemotherapy . We did it that way, but with Meloxicam. I would not however have used it without good cause since Jerry had huge problems with Previcox, it was just too strong for him. NSAIDs can cause long-term side effects if left unchecked without regular bloodwork, stomach ulcers being one. This resource is a good place to research NSAIDs and side effects:

We have lots of posts about the benefits of k9 rehab therapy and are even having an at-home online fitness course just for Tripawds. Registration is this week. We need a few more students before the class can start. Are you ready?

Yea....I love our regular vet and completely trust him with xrays and blood work, but he will never agree on anything the holistic vet says. So I just decided to go with what she said and then if she starts showing signs of pain, I'll worry about the NSAIDs then. I did feel like the Deramaxx just worked better for her so I would probably put her back on that I think.
I did give her Tramadol the other night because she was crying a little bit which she normally doesn't do. That seemed to help and I haven't given her anything since so fingers crossed! It's always so hard to know what they need. WHY CAN"T THEY JUST TALK! Hahahah!
Yeah, when you have "lrofessionals" with dissenting views and dogs who can't talk..UGH!!
Many conventional vets are very closed minded when it comes to holostic, and vice versa. So like Jerry said, it ends up being who you feel most comfortable wjth.
I gave my Happy Hannah some pain meds well into her thrpird week. Some dogs just need them longer. Every recovery js different. You know your Jill y best!
I'm thinking we need a dose of cuteness today! Have any poctures of Jil k y you can plst?
Hugs!

Thank you! We got lucky with her incision! No drainage and barely any bruising! She healed nicely and I can't wait to use our webmaster harness !
It really is priceless although I feel like a full time nurse now! I have 5 alarms set on my phone for all of her supplements! Haha!
