Hello!
My name is Angie. I have a 14 month old male pit bull mix named Calvert who had his leg amputated 4 days ago. This evening while he was urinating, I noticed his urine stream was sideways. He came back in and I noticed his penis was significantly swollen, as was most of his abdomen. His nipples were now intentions, not little bumps.
Now, I'm a big worry wort. I know about the seroma after surgery, but does it usually affect the penis and lower abdomen? I did notice that his urine stream was angled towards the unaffected side. Im thinking the swelling is from the edema and the seroma ... any ideas? Im getting him to the vet tomorrow for sure.
Hey Angie! Yea, I'd definitely get Calvert to the vet this morning if the swelling has moved that far down the abdomen. It's something that may need to be drained, and I would ask about putting him on a good antibiotic to help with and prevent infection. What meds is he on now?
Keep us updated and let us know what the vet says!

Calvert is on cephalexin 500mgs twice a day and vetprofen 75mg once daily. The swollen area around his penis is hard and hot. His appointment is this afternoon.
Good, Yea I'd ask about maybe adding another antibiotic. I'd just try to keep him calm and comfy until his appointment time rolls around. We'll have our fingers and paws crossed that it's nothing too serious. Feel free to hop over into the live chat. I'll be on for a bit.

If they do drain fluid and suspect an infection, ask them to send some away for a culture. This can better determine the right antibiotic. Ceflex is a good one, but not right for all infections. So glad you are getting him checked. You sound like a great puppy Mom who is on top of things. A great advocate for your boy. Lori and Ty

Thanks Lori and Ty!! Ill be sure to request that. Calvert is on vetprofen for pq ain. He doesn't seem to be on too much discomfort.
I rescued Calvert in March of this year from the local humane society. He and 3 or 4 others were found in a dumpster in the middle of January, while we were experiencing temps around -30. Only two survived. Calvert was with a foster for about a month and a half before I adopted him. He has overcame MANY challenges. Seperation anxiety and a psychological inability to stop drinking water were the worst. Whenever he would be given water, he would drink the whole bowl without stopping, then he would vomit.it took 2 months for him to develop normal drinking habits. And to go along with the drinking was the peeing. He would pee when he was lay in down, when he was walking, in his sleep. He peed ALL the time. It was impossible to potty train. As time went by though, calvert adjusted, things got better.
Now I live in a rural area and my dogs go out to use the restroom. We do not have a fenced in yard, and not much traffic comes by my house. Thursday June 12th Calvert was hit by an F250. I was not home at the time. Thankfully the person stopped and knocked. My roommate was able to get him to the vet right away. He got a shot for shock, and x rays showed no broken bones, however Calvert was unable to move his front right paw. The vet explained the radial nerve was either pinched, temporarily causing paralysis, or it was completely severed. Calvert came home, when he walked his paw dragged, but he adjusted. He started getting sores on the top of the paw from dragging. Unfortunately this set his potty training back. He was peeing while laying and just not making it outside. He had weekly check ups to assess if he was regaining any sensation. Each time, there was no change. A week ago we decided amputation was the best treatment. I felt he would get around more gracefully and his bad leg wouldn't get hung up, and the sores wouldn't get infected. He was already adjusted to walking on three legs anyway.
Last Wednesday was his surgery. It went well. The incision looks good. And he was walking and able to come home the next day. He moved with so much more ease. He gets staples out in 2 weeks.

Welcome! I'm just now catching up on your story. Wow. Calvert is such a survivor and you are one amazing, devoted pawrent for seeing him through such hard times!
How is he doing? What did the vet say? A few others have had this situation happen through the years, it's usually nothing serious. I hope it's the same for you two. Keep us posted OK?

Oh I'm glad it's all OK. Yeah, I suppose that can happen. Not too common here but now that you've posted about it, some day, someone else will be comforted by your story so thank you!
Here's a forum post about adding images. Basically you need to have your photos hosted somewhere, like here in a Tripawds blog, or on Photobucket, Flick'r etc. You'll paste the Image URL into the photo box icon here that you see above your forum writing box, 6th from right.
If that doesn't make sense let me know, I'm happy to help.

Thanks!
Unfortunately, Calvert must have scratched and ripped a couple staples or two away. i got home from class and there was so much blood on the carpet. I had Somerset wrap and gauze and a makeshift pressure dressing on it. Still bleeding though. Back to the vet tomorrow probably.
One thing right after another.... ready for a break and a moment to breathe.
Oh no Calvert! I hope that the incision is OK. Let us know OK?
Breathe mamma, you'll get through this. Hang in there.
