Please I need help.  My Brody can not relax and rest.  Continuous licking leg, panting, pacing.  I’m assuming because of pain. Meds don’t seem to be working.  How much is too much if I give him another dose?

Hey there, I'm sorry to hear Brody is so uncomfortable. When was his surgery?

Too much or too little pain medication can cause these symptoms. Balancing the meds can be challenging the first few days.

What are his medications and what are the dosages? And what does he weigh? We can't give you veterinary advice, you'll need to call them the clinic the morning or tonight if you are able, to find out what to do next. But we can share our own experiences with post-amputation pain management

Hang in there, it gets better!

Oh, so he has not had surgery yet.  Actually  your thread title said pre surgery.  Duh on me!

Okay, not Bets and not giving Vet advice.

The Carprofen  is an anti inflammatory...not necessarily  all that good at fighting  the pain Brody seems to be having.  The Trazedone is a strong sedative/anti anxiety.  Again, not a pain management   drug at all.

The Gabapentin  is a good paun med and that is what needs to be increased.  Of course, only with Vet approved.   But at 100 lbs 300 mg 2X is not enough for a dog his size.  Let your Vet know he is in pain and needs stronger pain dose and frequency  of the Gabapentin.

Glad the surgery is upcoming to get rid of that bum leg. What's  the reason formthe surgery,  any chance they could get him in any sooner?

He has sarcoma.  Rear right leg.  He is lucky to get Monday as we got a cancellation appointment sooner than his original.  I’m going to make contact or just take him to ER if he doesn’t settle.  He also has to follow me everywhere which doesn’t help when I’m home from work.  Seems he rests when I am gone.  His brain keeps telling him we need to go out and play, he is only 3 so still a lot of pup.  Thanks for input.

Well one thi g he has going for him to help thru recovery is he's clearly a strong willed and determined pupper!  Of course, that can be a hurdle trying to keep him quiet during surfery recovery.🤔

Yeah, Bets are crazy busy these days so glad you could at least get jn sooner than expected.

Hopefully  you can get his pain management   under co trol better now.  I k ow that leg is painful, but glad his attitude  is sti "I wanna' do what I always don't.  Spunky boy.

Keep us updates when you can.

Ah! Thanks for the details. It's great that he can go in on Monday, you're right, he's lucky to get that appointment.

I would let your vet know that he is showing a lot of pain signals right now. Again, not a vet here, but the Gabapentin dosage does seem really low for a dog his size, and in his condition. Advocate for a higher dosage and possibly a second pain reliever narcotic like Amantadine or Tapentadol, a newer and better form of Tramadol, that can dull the pain he is certainly in. See:

Thanks all,  added some Tramadol and increased his Gabapentin seems to be better covered now and relaxing.  Spasms seem less too.  His leg has a lot of atrophy.  Monday can’t come soon enough. sp_hearticon2sp_hearticon2

Good job! You must feel so relieved and anxious for the surgery day too. Soooo many emotions on this ride! Hang on and lean on us.

I remember our Jerry's leg and muscles also atrophied from disuse. Once that leg was gone and recovery was over he was a new dog. You guys will get there too.

For some reason Brody can’t relax again tonight.  Pacing, laying down and right back up.  Circling and panting.  I’m guessing pain but don’t want to give more since he isn’t due for awhile.  I thought we had this figured out but tonight isn’t going well. smiley6

Wonder of the Tramadol is causing  some of this?  As you know, that drug has kind of been put on the back burner now as far as being effective pain relief.  Some dogs to react quite anxiously  with it...pacing, restless, etc.

So what dose of Gaba is he on now and frequency.?  Sorry, I'm sure you've already told us.  When was his last dose and amount?

Such a bummer to have to see him like this.

300 twice a day.  He has finally calmed down and sleeping.  Yes worried Tramadol might be issue but seems to be down for the night now. I’m here reading about how to prepare home for him. We luckily own a carpet store and are making rugs to cover wood floors in loving area. His favorite spot to sleep. He will be confined to this area. Raised dishes are only thing missing.  My mind is racing with what if’s.

Yeah, welcome to the Worry Wart Club.  Always happens right before surgery and generally right afterwards.  We are here by your side though, okay?  You are not alone during all of this, okay?  There pretty much isn't  any "what if this or what if that" we haven't  already experienced  so lean on us for answers as the questions  pop up.

You are doing an excellent  job of prep....maybe not so good at taking care of yourself right now. 😉   TRY and get some rest.

Sounds like his "recovery area" is perfect.  It's  a apot he likes and feels comfortable  in.

Glad he is resting more comfortably. Not sure if you're  comfortable  with going with the Gaba only at this point, but the Tramadol  could be what's  causing  the restlessness,  as well as pain.  Once the pain gets ajead start. its harder to control.  Speak to your Bet again about increasing the Gaba...at the very least give it every eight.   I know we sound like a broken record, but 300 mg every twelve hours is definitely  on the "light" side for Brody.

Okay kiddo, hang in there.  And yes, owning a carpet store is definitely a plus in thos journey!!

Oh my gosh how perfect that you own a carpet store! We would love to see what you come up with! As for raised feeders, you can just put the bowls on a milk crate, or short step stool for now, works perfectly till you find the ideal raised feeder.

I'm so glad he's able to rest now. Yes, there's so much to think about and it can feel so overwhelming. Lean on us, ask as many questions as you'd like, we are here to help.
