Our 10 year old golden was diagnosed with grade 2 fibrosarcoma and had her left front leg amputated on Friday 3/31. There was no evidence that the cancer had traveled outside her leg. They reported that her surgery went well and she did fine under anesthesia. All was normal.
That night around midnight they tried to get her up and she wouldn't, but at 5 am they were able to get her up with 2 people using a sling and she went potty but her heart rate was very high and her breathing was labored. When the surgeon came in at 7 she was unresponsive but breathing. They reduced her opiods and she sat right up, but within a few hours she was unresponsive again, her heart rate high and her blood pressure very low. Her lactate levels were also high.
They asked us to come see her right away. When we go there she wagged her tail a little so clearly heard our voice but didn't open her eyes. They gave her medicine to help the blood pressure, fluids and oxygen. We waiting for several hours and they let us see her again mid afternoon and she was completely unresponsive to us.
We went back again last night and this time she lifted her head, opened her eyes and wagged her tail alot so clearly she heard us so we feel good about that. But her heart rate still very high with labored breathing. We are now waiting on the call from the surgeon this morning. They said no new was good news overnight and were encouraged that she wagged her tail for us as she had not done that for them at all.
At first they thought it was a very strong reaction to the opiods but since this is continuing they are thinking now that she threw a blood clot. Her lungs looked fine on the xray and her urine output looks normal. They said this is very rare and they haven't seen this before.
Please pray for her. Anyone see this or hear of this happening before?
Jennifer I'm so sorry about Piper! I can't imagine how scared you guys were when you were asked to go see her. I'm just so glad she is more responsive, that is really encouraging. I hope you got more good news this morning.
Unfortunately these kinds of situations sometimes happen. Yes, they're rare. It's one reason why having a post-op Tripawd at a 24-hour vet clinic for the first night or two is critical. Imagine if nobody had been there to help Piper when she first showed those symptoms?! Sadly, we've seen that happen. Sounds like she has an excellent vet team looking out for her.
I'm sorry Piper is battling this condition. She sounds like a strong girl though and has everything on her side to rebound. Please keep us posted OK? We are here for you (and your future posts won't need approval so post away).
