I can't believe it's been a week since Happy's surgery! He's done well at home after 4 days at the vet...The last couple of days he was sleeping mostly, but today he barked at me to let him out. I was a little nervous about him barking, but he was fine, and he even barked at some doggie passers-by..After he 'did his business' he even did a little mini shuffle dance as he usually does. We laid outside in the grass and chilled for a while as the weather today is beautiful! So he is doing very well and I couldn't be happier about it..Just thought I'd let everyone know-I know I was pretty anxious there for awhile but knowing what to expect was helpful in preparing and in being able to be a good leader for him...hopefully we will remain uneventful. 🙂

It's hard to see that things will get better when you're dealing with the recovery period, but they really do, don't they? Very pawesome update!

You'll have to video the mini-shuffle dance and post it for us!

Really good news, it sounds like Happy is on his way!!!

Shuffle dance?  Do you mean the alpha dog spread your stuff dance?  I like your name for it, I think I will use it!  Both the quad pugs do it, although Tani's legs don't always cooperate.

I hope you have nothing to report until the stitches come out laugh.

Hooray for Happy doing well! Hope all continues to go smoothly!

All the best,
Jackie, Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

That is great news! I am new to this site, looking at getting my dog's front leg amputated next week and really anxious about what to expect post-op. My vet says that most of the time they feel so much better within days of the surgery once the tumor has been removed. I too am nervous about how she is going to do her thing, etc. after the surgery. I am encouraged that your pup is doing so well and your experience is good. laugh

Yea for Happy!!  We're glad he's doing well.  Lucy's 1 week post op was yesterday.  We enjoyed the beautiful Texas weather today too! Unfortunately I have to head back to work tomorrow...

Yes, I'd love to see the shuffle!

Best Regards,

Mary, Lucy's mom

Lucy's front right leg was amputated 12/19/11. Thankfully there was no tumor, but her nerves were found to be degenerative.  Life as a tripawd is Lucy's new adventure!!

Thanks everyone! I will try to catch that video..lol..Welcome Amy! What a cute pup! The book Three Legs and a Spare has been very helpful for me in having a lot of info in one easy place. Since I have to drive two hours to College Station where Happy had his surgery, I asked the vet if he could be sure to stay through the worst part (maybe three days) and he said absolutely-that he would not want to send him home unless he was ready for a long car ride and well into recovery. Then on the third day he had a fever, so he wound up staying another day. So, it was helpful I think that I did not bring him home after one or two days. I can see where all dogs are different in all of these regards. Happy had an active day yesterday and I had a visitor who he loves, so he was excited..now today he's a sleepy boy 🙂

So happy that Happy is doing well.  The first 2 weeks of recovery are always the hardest so just know that this is all part of the recovery process and the fact that he is doing well so far is a very good sign. laugh  We wish you all the best and look forward to hearing more about his shuffle dance!

Kami, Angel Mackenzie

My sweet golden Mackenzie.  She became my angel on Dec 29, 2010 at the age of 8 1/2  although she was always my angel from the time we brought her home.  She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in Sept 2009 and officially became a tripawd (front leg) on Nov 5, 2009.  She will be forever in my heart and now she's running free with all of our other tripawd heroes.  I love you Mackenzie!
