Hey Everyone - Sorry for not updating the past few days... just enjoying time with Oakley and busy with some work stuff.
Oakley is still doing phenomenally post surgery. We are officially at 8 days now and I am seeing some of the bruising disappear.
Yesterday, we went for a short walk or “hop” down the block and he was smiling the whole time.
One question that I wanted to ask was when everyone saw their tripawd start to lay on the affected side again? Oakley definitely is getting tired of laying on his right side and is beginning to explore laying in his left. It’s been slowly progressing a little more each day but he still doesn’t tolerate it for long.
Hi Paul! It's great to hear how well Oakley is doing! I remember Griffin doing a bit of "trying out" on his right side, but I don't honestly remember when he started comfortably laying on it for longer periods of time. I can say that by a month out from surgery, he was laying on that side consistently - not as much as he lays on his left side, but he definitely regularly sleeps on his right side now. Now, please post more photos of your smiling boy! ~ Stacy
Griffin lived an amazing life for 11 years! Diagnosed with osteosarcoma on March 17, 2020, Griffin's right forelimb was amputated on April 2, 2020. Ten days later he was running and playing fetch! Lung metastasis discovered in July 2020 did not slow down Griffin and he lived joyfully for the next 7 months, passing peacefully at home on February 11, 2021. https://griffin.tripawds.com
Glad Oakley enjoyed his little hop around. I can just picture him smiling the whole way!
I dont think here really is a "general" timeframe for laying on the incision. Some do ot "relatively quickly arpu d the time the stitches are out, or even sooner. Some take longer. Mi think mu Happy Hannah was maybe avout four or five weeks.

Hi Paul,
I'm glad to hear Oakley is adjusting so quickly! He looks like such a happy boy.
As for laying on his other side, I imagine you could get a lot of different answers here, depending on the pup. My new tripawd was able to lay on her stitches on the first or second day for a little while, but would eventually switch sides. She definitely favored her other side, and still does, but when she had the bandage on, or now, a t shirt, it seems to protect the stitches from catching and it doesn't seem to bother her too much.
I'd think it'd be pretty reasonable for him to be apprehensive about putting too much contact on that side until he figures out what's comfortable to him and what's not.
Best of luck to Oakley and you. You're making great progress already!
So darn CUTE! I swear in that last picture with the t-shirt he's saying "Strike a Pose...Vogue!"

All dogs are different in the timeline, but if he's starting to explore the other side that is fantastic. Allow him to explore and he will find that it's not so difficult after a while.
Every update he keeps on amazing us. I'm so happy things are going well for you!

Oakley is doing very well. We are still having little issues with him sleeping through the night and not waking us up multiple times trying to get comfortable, but we are hoping once he gets his staples out Monday, he will be able to lay on his other side which we know he wants to do. He is starting to be more himself-sometimes choosing laying on the floor despite his abundance of beds. We aren’t ready to work on steps yet, but he ran down the back steps last night before we could stop him and he ran up them today-all without issue. We are still going to carry him so we don’t chance him falling. He has an oncology appointment on Thursday in Pittsburgh. All things considered, he is not missing a beat as a tripawd. ❤️
CUTENESS ALERT!!! And the one of Oakley stretched out so comfy on the sofa with his best Burt Reynolds Playboy pose (look ot up) just priceless!!
Yeah, when the stitches come out Oakley may be able to lay on his preferred side shortly thereafter
And Oakley....shhh.....GREAT job on the stairs!!! 😎 But don't tell your hoomans I said that, okay? That scared them when they saw you handling those stairs like a Champ!!!
Love the pictures so much. Oakley DOES smile!!😁

Hi Paul! I agree with Sally (although I'm not sure about the Burt Reynolds reference...) about loving the feet up pose on the couch, but I also laughed out loud at the last photo with his huge smile and alert ears - he looked like he was about to get into some good trouble, maybe with Odie. Griffin handled going upstairs pretty quickly and easily, but going down, especially when the steps are not deep enough to allow his back legs down on the same step as his front leg, is still something we are practicing, but it doesn't surprise me that Oakley would handle both like a champ! Good for him! ~ Stacy

He is looking soooo good and has a look in his eyes that says he's ready to take on the world! And oh that spunky behavior tackling those stairs on his own is telling me that he really, really wants to get back to normal. I'm going to bet you'll see a huge shift when those staples come out.
You guys are so conscientious about caring for him through the hardest parts of recovery. Great job!

5/11/20 - Oakley's Post-Op CheckUp
Oakley's post-op checkup went great today! Staples were getting quite embedded due to how well he was healing so there a few raw spots now that they are removed. The vet was very happy with how things looked and how he has been doing at home.
We will be taking him off all pain medicine starting today but will monitor to ensure we don't notice him being in discomfort. I had already backed down his Gabapentin a day ago due to his sleeping issues and he was more normal yesterday, so I think getting of these will be good for him.
The oncology report confirmed that the mass was osteosarcoma. We didn't expect otherwise, but it just validates everything we have done and will continue to do to give him the best life possible. Our first oncology appointment and hopefully first chemo will be this Thursday.
Overall at this point we remain incredibly optimistic. Oakley is happy and is cuter now as a tripawd then he was before. 🙂
