Out of nowhere tonight, my Great Dane Nova has started making these strange wheezing sounds. She had her second round of chemo a little over a week ago, and has been doing great. Tonight she had a big dinner, mood has been upbeat, everything's been great. But this wheezing stuff has got me worried about something in her lungs. Anyone ever seen anything like this?

Wheezing is usually due to small airway disease like allergies or asthma whereas a cough is what we hear with heart failure, bronchitis, pneumonia, or lung mets.  It can be hard to tell without a stethoscope or xray, but if she is eating and acting fine it is probably nothing.  This time of year we sometimes see allergies to Christmas trees or scented candles and the chemo could make her more sensitive.  Ask your vet about an antihistamine if it persisits or schedule a chest xray with your next appointment.

Thanks, Pam and Tazzie. I just called the vet and it sounds like it's more like reverse sneezing. I couldn't think of the right word to describe the sound. Her gums are pink, and it seems to have stopped for now. It's just hard to not freak out about every little thing, especially since everything has been going so well for her.  I think maybe she just ate her dinner too fast and maybe aspirated a little bit of food. We do have a chest x-ray scheduled before her next round of chemo on January 7th.

Sue and Nova

You should see if the oncologist will do an xray on Nova just to make sure she's fine. I know Titan had the reverse sneezing but he has allergies. I woul ddo an xray to ease your mind. I know Titan was doing great (not to scare you) but the chemo was not effective enough for him so the cancer is in his lungs. I always wondered if I should have pushed harder or mentioned the reverse sneezing.

Hi,

Could it be that Nova had/has a case of kennel cough??  My two dogs - Selma and Hiro - had it.  They got the virus from the kennel where I went to pick out Hiro (Animal Welfare).  It took some strong antibiotics and about 3 months of tlc to heal!!
