Hello! We are new here, and currently on day 4 after front right limb amputation. Mort all of a sudden had a mass on his shoulder that was misdiagnosed as a pulled muscle. He went on prednisone and antibiotics but they did nothing, so next came X-rays. The rest of his body checked out clean, so surgery was the next step. Amputation was worst case scenario and was only to happen if his bone was affected by the mass, and it turns out the mass actually wore a small hole through his scapula. Even though it was so hard to do, that in itself told us we for sure made the right decision to amputate. The results of his biopsy haven't come back yet, but we are 99% sure it is cancerous. Anyways, so happy I found this website because I had no idea how mentally/physically exhausting the healing process would be. My poor Mort cried the entire first night he was home, day two he actually started hobbling around on his own (with our help, but we sure were pumped!), and then bam! Day 3 in the afternoon he started screaming/panting/gums were looking white/couldn't get comfy/etc. We brought him to the emergency clinic and it was there they decided to up his pain meds, and he also got a shot of methadone so he could rest easy that night. I had some false hope, and now I'm back to being anxiety-ridden because I don't know what to expect and I don't want that to happen again. He is now taking Gabapentin every 8 hours (300mg instead of 200mg now), Cephalexin every 12 hours, and quellin every 12 hours. I'm going to be posting his progress here, but if anyone has any tips/suggestions to make this transition any easier it would be greatly appreciated. Also I should note I have made a base camp on our living room floor and he has had 24 hour care since his surgery.
Mort and family, welcome. We're glad you found us too!
Sorry about the diagnosis. It sounds to me (and I'm not a vet so take this for what it's worth) that Mort's new pain medication is just what he needed. His combo of meds sounds spot-on and you should see an improvement soon.
Of course you're exhausted, it's hard not to worry! We've been there and can totally relate. My best advice at this point is to keep in touch with your vet clinic (which you're obviously already doing, good job!) and remember to be a strong pack leader. Mort will absorb your emotions and reflect them back so the stronger and more optimistic you are, the more he will feel it and bounce back stronger and faster.
In the meantime have you seen Jerry's Required Reading List or the Tripawds e-books library? Most of your questions will be answered there but of course our wonderful community will also provide feedback and ideas too, so stay tuned.
Keep us posted, we're wishing you guys a restful night and week ahead.

Welcome! We are on day 12 or 13 (ack, I've forgotten!) so it's all very fresh. I'll say that days 3-4 were very hard for us too. Hang in there! We have all been there. I received a lot of helpful tips in the comments of my Tripawds blog. This community is so amazing.
I'm glad you are getting Mort's pain figured out. I hope that the next few days go well!

Welcome! You are at one of the hardest stages of this journey right now. By day 3 & 4 all of the surgery drugs have worked their way out of their system and many dogs take a dive around that time. It's a very fine line to walk with trying to figure out if they have enough pain medication or too much because symptoms can be the same in either scenario. You're doing everything right you looked for help when you felt you needed to and you will soon know if the pain is controlled by adding the extra. Remember also that Mort will be using new muscles to hop around with so keep activity to eating, drinking, sleeping and short potty breaks. You want to make sure he's drinking enough and eating some good protein to help him heal. Take care of yourself too this is one emotionally draining journey. If Sally were here she would recommend a big bag of chocolate for yourself. And as Jerry (Rene) said your attitude is all important. Mort will be totally looking to you for guidance so you need to project calmness and strength. You can do this we'll all be right there to help you however we can. Hang in there you will soon ease into a routine that works for you. It does get easier very soon now. Hugs!

Ditto on the other comments. I think I found this site on day 5. I was exhausted, giving meds every couple of hours and trying to figure out when/if Otis was in pain. It does get better! We are in week 3 post amp and week 1 post chemo, and finally over the pain problems. I have a forum post where I detailed our journey if it is helpful to you. Non-slip mats on tile or wood floor are key - cheap yoga mats work well.
Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016. Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016. Lung mets August 25, 2016. Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016. Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

I agree with everyone else here - this is the hardest time, but it will get better. You can try applying an ice pack to the incision a couple times a day...that helps with swelling. Make sure to put a cloth between the ice pack and the skin. Also some massage around the area to help re-absorb any extra fluids.

Hope you are feeling a bit more reassured by reading all this great firsthand advice.
As odd as this may sound, you will actually become stronger with each "down" on this up and down journey because you'll realize that's "normal"!
I joined here on day six. My first post was seeking help because I feared I jad made a horrible decision! Everyone here threw me a lifeline and pulled me back to shore...several times!!
I don't think I realized how insanely exhausted I was until I was able to get five hours sleep straight after I made that ppst here! Prior to thst, maybe five total!!
Stay connected! You are not alone!
My suggestion for you...sleel and chocolate...not necessarily in that order!
Love!

Wanted to give an update on Mort. His recovery from his amputation has been going great (we are now on day 6), but we got his biopsy results back today and my heart is broken. The mass came back as hemangiosarcoma (cancer of the blood vessels), and they feel they were not able to remove it all when they did surgery. I have no idea what to do next...we will talk more with our vet about our options tomorrow. Anyone else here have a dog with the same type of cancer?
Others will chime in who have dealt with that specific type. They will offer good input and some of the treatment paths they have taken.
Deep breaths, okay? While this is not what anybody wants to hear, those of us who have been here for awhile know it is not unexpected.
REMEMBER, none of these "reports" mean squat ro Mort! Nothing has changed in Mort's world! Well, okay, maybe adjusting to three legs is a bit of a change! Other than that, Mort is getting on with living and not worrying about a thing!
Mort is a fighter and has no intention of going anywhere anytime soon!
TRY, as hard as it is, TRY to keep things chunked down right now. Focus on getting through this recovery phase and enjoy the bliss of every second yiu see his sparkle come back...slowly, BUT SURELY!!
After gathering all the information, you'll be able to develop a plan and move forward.
STAY CONNECTED!! We've got your back!
Much love!

Aww dang I'm sorry, I know how that really hurts you and yes, lean on us! Stay pawsitive, Be More Dog and remember that Mort doesn't care two hoots about the path report.
Some dogs will outlive the hemangio stats, like Bucky! You will love this senior pup's story:

I'm guessing you're working with an oncologist? If not, now is the time so be sure to get a referral OK? They can come up with a great strategy to manage the cancer.

Howdy and welcome!!!
Can't wait to see pictures of Mort! My brother has always had rescued greyhounds and they're such gentle fur-babies. I'm sure your Mort is no different.
I'm sorry you're here, but thrilled at the same time. You're in great company!

Mort has still been doing great...we are 9 days post amputation. On Tuesday he gets his staples out, plus he will get an ultrasound to see if his cancer (hemangiosarcoma) has spread. Anyone have any first-paw experience with metronomic chemotherapy ? Depending on the results we get from his ultrasound, Tuesday will bring some big decisions!
Hello,
