Hi Everyone,

My fur baby Donnie is one week post op, and biopsy came back as osteosarcoma. Just need some advice, because I am going crazy worrying. He developed a cough immediately after surgery so the vet had him stay 2 nights at the hospital after his surgery to monitor him. They concluded it wasn't anything serious and could just be from intubation. Now we are 7 days post op, and his cough seems to be getting worse day by day but usually only at night. Although his cough is getting worse, everything else has been on the rise. He has great appetite, not too picky with his food, goes potty regularly, and lots of energy to even jump again. I spoke to my vet regarding his cough and they still think it's just from intubation, and told me to try providing steam from a hot shower. He basically can't drink water, or he'll immediately start hacking and cough up all the water he just drank but while eating solid food he's completely fine.

Has anyone else had this experience with their recovery?

Please let me know, thank you!

Hi Karen,

First, it's really good that Donnie is doing so well overall. These are all good signs that he's eating and pottying and energetic.

While there have been some dogs who have had intubation coughs for a few days after surgery, what you are describing sounds like there could be something more going on, possibly not even related to surgery but not serious either. I would take videos of Donnie when he's trying to drink, and then send to your vet so they can see what is going on.

Try not to panic, this is probably not serious and will resolve itself. But it's still good to show your vet a video of him doing that. He does need to drink water, that's important!

Your future posts won't need approval so post away!

Yes, overall sou ds like Donne is doing very well.

As Jerry said, while very coincidental, the cough could be unrelated.  And yes, often there is some irritation  after intubation but I have no clue the timefram before it clears up.

I would ask the Vet for more solutions for treatment,  especially if he is having trouble keeping the water down.  Dehydration is not something  to want to crop up, that's  for sure. Wondering  if kennel cough  could be a factor?

Keepmis posted, okay?  FWIW we are big on getting second  opinions  when necessary.   If for another reason, just reassurance.

Hi guys,

Just update, so we ended up going to emergency one day because he was regurgitating water in scary amounts. Turns out he had aspiration pneumonia. He's on the mend now after some stronger antibiotics, he still can't drink water without hacking but the coughing has subsided immensely. The weird thing is he is able to eat his food even if I put in lots of bone broth or water mixed in, but just not straight water.

Well I'm certainly sorry this happened, I'm really glad you posted here with the symptoms and thus the ultimate solution pinpointed at the ER.  A second opinion, even if it's at the ER, was certainly needed.

Good job of staying on top of things.  This type of thing does. You are on the right path with treatment, antibiotics, Etc. This should resolve fairly quickly, of course, never quick enough when it comes to our dogs, right?

Keep us posted!

HUGS!

Oh gosh that's scary! I'm glad he's doing better now. You did GREAT by taking him in, possibly saving his life! Eeeek!
