Sure, the not eating is a bummer, vut this really is a good update!

YAY for good CBC and kidney values! And we love fatty cells around here!! YAY!

RENE, or anyone, you just mentioned a drug better than Cerenia for nausea. Of course, I can't remember name or post you just put it in! Maybe it will help Mosby.

So Mosby's tired of peanuts, eh? Holding out for a bigger prize are ya'? Scrambled eggs with cheese maybe? Of course chicken, but it has to be warmed. Another little trick, put this (or whatever the food is) in your own dinner plate. Act like you are eating it, then put it on the floor offering it to Mosby.

Have a great weekend and enjoy the spoiling. It's so much fun!!

Lots of hugs and love

Rosie's onc prescribed Ondansetron to help with tummy upset on her new regimen.  Here is what Jerry said:

Super helpful information, thank you so much for sharing! I especially love that they are giving Rosie Ondansetron to handle any GI upset. That is a GREAT drug, and from what I'm told, more effective than Cerenia, which is what most vets give to patients.

Here is the Thread- Rosie is on a newer med for lung mets.

Mosby certainly has had a challenging journey!  It's time that boy gets some kind of break!

Mosby is actually on Ondansetron already - he gets that prophylactically for 3-4 days after each treatment, so this loss of appetite is actually break-through from the ondasetron. Ondansetron previously worked great. So hopefully the two drugs combined, plus an additional for diarrhea (not bad, just a little loose, so the vet suggested this as well) will get his tummy right. He wasn't able to have his fortiflora this morning since he didn't eat anything.

I agree that Mosby needs a break! I told my husband to try putting the food on a plate first and pretending to eat it, then putting it on the floor. Good suggestion! Fingers crossed our boy starts eating again, that was the one thing that had been consistently good since day one post-amp!

Pupdate! My husband just sent me a video of Mosby, lying on his bed, eating a plate of chicken and rice. My husband captioned it "No one can resist my cooking!" So, yay! Good job, Mosby. And Chris.

However, Chris has had no success feeding him his pills. Mosby locks his jaw for poor Chris and wouldn't even eat them in a hot dog. 🙁

Unfortunately, Mosby did not eat chicken and rice the second time last night. And has been pretty spotty with food since then. He'd eat some pieces of hot dog last night. And some pieces of scallops (um, yes, that's what my husband cooked us last night, so I may have fed Mosby some pieces of scallop). This morning my husband woke up and cooked him chicken and rice, and even made a gravy for it, and even pretended to eat it, and Mosby refused. But later he did eat the pieces of chicken. He also fought him really hard on the pills and he only got about 80% down. When I came down, I got him to eat a can of his dog food. He is turning down most treats. Poor fellow. I'm trying to remind myself that this can be a really typical symptom of chemo, but wishing he had sailed through it like the first time. And of course at this point he's not only feeling the effects, but he's also on so many drugs - pain, stomach, etc. - that he's out of it.

One cute moment - we let him out a while ago, and even though it's cold, it's nice and sunny. He stood out there a bit, and the next thing we knew he was rubbing his face in the grass, followed by a "flop," and then a full on wallow / back scratch roll in the grass. Either his back is feeling good enough to wiggle around like that, or he just did a number to it! Hopefully the former. It was cute to see, and hopefully this tummy issue will resolve itself and he'll feel better soon.

Where is that award...that certificate? Oh!! Just found it!

Ladies and gentlemen, we proudly present this CERTIFICATE OF BEING UNBELIEVABLY PATIENT DURING ALL THE UPS AND DOWNS OF RECOVERY!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 And Mosby certainly has had a few...er..."extra" challenges!!

I know it's frustrating seeing him be picky with his food. As you noted though, not unexpected considering all the meds, plus the chemo. Be sure and keep the Onco in the loop so they can make adjustments if necessary.

I felt reassured when I re-read your post a couple of times. Mosby IS eating some and not completely fasting! I loooove the visual of Mosby wallowing around for a good back scratch. I always think that's a really good indicator of whether a dog is feeling okay or not. Mosby feels okay!! 🙂 🙂

And Chef Hubby, you're doing a great job of cooking for your pup...and wife too!! And your husband doing the "plate trick"...such a devoted Dad!!

Come on Colonel Mosby! We want that chow hound side of you start shining through agai ! 🙂

Hugs

Well, it's hard to be patient, not because I want things to be easier for me, but because I want them to be easier for Mosby. But thank you for the award. 😉

I've been emailing with his onco since yesterday to keep her up to speed. She said if his appetite isn't better by tomorrow, she recommends an injection of anti-nausea meds plus sub-cutaneous fluids, and possibly an appetite stimulant. Mosby is having a nice snooze right now. We're still going to take him out to the barn today, because I think the fresh air will be good, and it will be good for his morale. And maybe it will stimulate his appetite! Although what he'll probably want is some tasty horse muffins, warm from the oven. :/ Dogs love those. Yuck.

Yes. And we started him on it a day or two prior to chemo hoping it would help help prevent stomach upset.

Any suggestions are definitely welcome. 🙂 He has been drinking really well (knock on wood ...) so we haven't had to worry about that.

Please send list of all meds, dosages, timing, and foods attempted if you have time. Will be talking with Team VetSchool this weekend and will mention this, no problem. Getting out in fresh air is an excellent idea just for the fun of it, though!!! GO TEAM MOSBY!!!

Thanks! 😀 The support here is invaluable.

Mosby is on:

100mg Gabapentin 2x day for any residual phantom limb pain, as well as nerve pain related to his back.

3.75 mg Meloxicam 1x day as anti-inflammatory for his back and joints.

75 mg Tramadol 3 x day for back pain.

Note: His back has been pretty good the last week or so with the above combo, plus we had our first acupuncture Tuesday. I am happy with this combo.

80 mg Maropitant 1x day for nausea (started yesterday bc of appetite loss)

375 mg Metronidazole 2x day for loose stools (started yesterday bc of tummy issues)

8 mg Ondestadron 2x day for nausea (started right after chemo as prophylactic anti-nausea)

pepcid 1x day for tummy

375 mg Cipro 2x day - this is for the staph infection he got in his incision site.

I think that's it, ha. CBC and kidney function were normal Thursday pre-carboplatin.

Yesterday Mosby ate cooked chicken breast with brown rice early in the day after rejecting the food he's been vacuuming up for 5 weeks (blue buffalo kibble w/ canned mixed in). Did not eat the rice and chicken breast when offered for dinner. Turned his nose up at peanut butter and cheese we'd been using for pills. Turned his nose up at the treats he's been eating with gusto. Did eat some pieces of hot dog.

Today Mosby did not eat chicken breast with brown rice for breakfast, but later ate the pieces of chicken when hand-fed. Still turning his nose up at his treats, except for a few. Did express some interest in peanut butter and cheese but I didn't force it. Did eat a little bit of bacon and scrambled eggs . And ate an entire can of canned blue buffalo turkey, which made me feel much better.

So I do think his appetite has improved from yesterday. He won't eat pumpkin but we might try some sweet potatoes. And we might try white rice instead of brown - maybe he's just being picky. Hopefully he will eat some more canned food tonight. I am really, really hopeful things will keep improving.

For whatever it's worth, he's definitely not OFF food completely like many dogs are for a few days.

Okay you techie people with steel trap minds.....who just took their dog OFF Pepcid and round that their dog ate better without it??

How much longer on the Cipro?

Sounds like your Vet has a really good plan in place to help him eat better. Fluids seem to do wonders sometimes!

It is such a hopeless feeling when we want our dogs to feel better, especially under these circumstances!! Such an awful feeling.

Really hope the barn trip is good for everybody! I know it will be!! Especially after eating a few warm muffins!! 🙂 We'll be waiting for the update!! 🙂

Love!

The great news is that Mosby is not completely off food: he is simply more judicious!

Mentioned the issues and the likely culprit is Cipro and Metronidazole. For some, that is a double whammy for lack of appetite. Vets were not too concerned as they said dogs can go for days ( and days) before they would worry(!). Now, personally, I would not want to see that but EmmaRose at her advanced age and with all of her health concerns did not eat for five days in the hospital...and still, the vets were unconcerned.

When will Mosby be off Cipro and Metronidazole?

Have you tried baby food or any wet cat food ( particularly shreds which has a lot of juice)? Wet cat food is higher in fat and protein which would help now.

Also mentioned: some dogs need MORE Pepcid and some react poorly to it...

Hope the Mosby feels better soon!
