Harley and I have talked it over ... we are voting for this one!! Wouldn't this be wonderful? Keeping you in our prayers!
Amputation on 11/10/09, due to Histiocytic Sarcoma in left elbow. Angel Harley earned his wings on 06/24/10.
I for one think you can bank on the explanation the vet gave. She would not give you that kind of positive feedback if it weren't possible.
You are an awsome lady to have the wits about you to donate OJ's meds to those who need them. We have a wonderful family here - definitely a cut above average.
Holding you close in these trying times, even if we are far away!
Shanna & Spirit Trouble ~ Trouble gained her wings 3/16/2011, a 27 1/2 month cancer survivor, tail wagging. RIP sweetheart, you are my heart and soul. Run free at Rainbow Bridge.
The November Five - Spirits Max, Cherry, Tika, Trouble & Nova. 11/2008 - 3/2013 An era ends as Queen Nova crossed the Bridge.
I am really hoping that our resident Dr. Pam will ring in on this and say is this even a possibility?? Because believe me I will vote for it too!! I have noticed today (it may have been before, but now my eyes and ears are GLUED to him) he seems to do the coughy/gaggy/chokey thing after eating something. I wonder if there is something in his throat? I did have a dog many many years ago who I rescued and had tonsils FULL of foxtails. I am really careful to keep them out of our yard, but we have gone a lot of places and those darn things can travel through the body.
we now have a supply of tri tip, chuck steak and some stew meat (hey, whatever works) that I will try to mix with some of the fresh pet food so he gets SOME kind of veggie things in him too.
The one bright spot this week...My friend I referred to in the OJ info, who called him her therapy cat (she has had quite a two year battle with stage 4 colon cancer metastasized to her liver, three surgeries, the last taking 60% of her liver) did a three month scan and thank you God, no tumors so far! (after the first surgery, in three months six tumors had grown).
An interesting thing her onc said today was that too much chemo makes the liver brittle and I was wondering if that connected to what happened to Raven??
Diane, please tune in on Saturday in the chat room to get Pam's feedback if you don't hear from her here. 5pm Pacific. See you there.
And yeay for your BFF Diane, that's fabulous!
P.S. You're making Admin Guy very jealous with that freezer full of meat. Poor guy married to a veggie girl!

Wow Diane - you sure are going through a lot these days. I'm just getting caught up (just when I thought I was caught up) and wanted to let you know we are thinking of you. I vote for what the vet said - and it sounds like from what everyone else is voting - it's unanimous! Hang in there and if you need us to come over and share some dinner with you let us know - Mackenzie and Kobe would love to get their grubby little paws on all that tri-tip, chuck steak and stew meat - whoa now that's a feast worth traveling for!
Kami (Mackenzie's Mom)
P.S. Glad to hear the news about your friend - that must be such a huge relief!
My sweet golden Mackenzie. She became my angel on Dec 29, 2010 at the age of 8 1/2 although she was always my angel from the time we brought her home. She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in Sept 2009 and officially became a tripawd (front leg) on Nov 5, 2009. She will be forever in my heart and now she's running free with all of our other tripawd heroes. I love you Mackenzie!
GerrysMom (aka Yoda's Mom) here -
If more blood is coughed up, or if it seems like the cough is bad enough that he can't catch his breath, check his gums. If they're pale, you'd want to get him into the vet asap. He absolutely could have a lot more quality time left. I ultimately had to let Yoda go due to bad lung met bursts that caused his lungs to fill up. But he bounced back beautifully in between (caught a rabbit in the yard), and I know others, like Tika, kept going and going and going even after episodes of coughing up blood. I just figured it'd be good to have something to check for to ease the mind. So check those gums if you're worried!
More thoughts and prayers coming your way!!
Gerry has been a tripawd since 12/16/2009.
He was a shelter dog with a mysterious past and an irrepairable knee injury.
Videos and pics of Gerry's pawesomeness can be found at: http://gerry.tripawds.com
Pawesome advice Bri, I didn't even think of that! Thanks.

Thank you so much Gerry'smom/Yoda's mom...I have actually started reading with the thread about Yoda among those that were suggested to read! I have printed this out also to keep....I am so glad to have gotten these responses today...that first show of blood (well other than the mysterious black stuff) after a cough/choke was pretty scary....and It may not be the first, who knows WHAT'S ground into the carpet!!!!
My vet actually just sent a lovely bouquet of flowers!! But I think it is for OJ, not Magic's blood (didn't want his head to get swelled)....
THanks to everyone who has helped me out today, I really really appreciate you.
She said perhaps the chemo is working on the mets and he is coughing up dead ones.
This is the one we're voting for, too! We're here for you, Diane... even if I'm late jumping in to send hugs!
Lots and lots of hugs,
Holly and Holly's mom and new puppy Zuzu
Holly joined the world of tripawds on 12/29/2009. She has a big little sister, Zuzu, who idolizes Holly and tries to make all of her toys into tripawds in Holly's honor. And she's enjoying life one hop at a time!

Diane, Magic, and Spirit OJ,
I know that everyone here is voting for the chemo working and Magic is coughing up dead ones and I would like to cast more than just a vote here. Until Pam tells us we are crazy, I would like to give some evidence that this indeed may be the case - evidence based upon Miss Cherry's experience.
At the time of Miss Cherry's initial visit to her oncology/surgical team, they noticed a growth on what they believed to be her single functioning kidney. Of course, we focused upon the amputation of the leg and Cherry's first chemotherapy treatment occurred just hours after the amputation - just as her body returned to room temperature. They had tried to aspirate the growth during that initial visit and there was some talk about doing additional exploratory surgery later to determine the exact nature of the growth. Since I was having such a hard time with the chemo and not wanting to subject her to even more stress, we never did do the surgery. The fact that the recommended treatment would have been the chemotherapy protocol that she was undergoing only added support to that decision. However, on December 23, 2008 (thirty four days after the amputation and first chemotherapy treatment), Miss Cherry began to dump large amounts of blood into her urine. Analysis showed that there was blood but no bacterial cause. The blood continued for approximately seven days. An ultrasound at her next chemotherapy treatment confirmed that the blood had come from the depleted growth on the kidney. We never again had indication of this growth.
I often suggest that one keeps a detailed journal as they start their TriPawd journey and this is exactly why. You can read my description of the details in that journal via the following LINK. This journal has not been modified since I posted the individual entries, but I have often referred to it when trying to remember details.
So, I again state - until Pam tells us we are crazy, we are going with this explanation.
Still Praying that Magic will rally,
Spirit Cherry's Dad
Sorry to hear about Magic coughing up some liver/lung... I know that must have made you freak. But as you've already read by now... so many other tripawds have gone through similar incidents and have lived many more happy months. I'm hoping that your vet is right about the chemo killing the tumors and they're just being coughed up... Sounds good to me!! So, try not to panick yet... As long as Magic seems happy and is enjoying sniffing and humping other dogs ... then that's a good sign, right?!!
Enjoy every minute you have with him... Sending you and your adorable Magic a big fat hug!!
Angel Jake's Mom
Jake, 10yr old golden retriever (fractured his front right leg on 9/1, bone biopsy revealed osteosarcoma on 9/10, amputation on 9/17) and his family Marguerite, Jacques and Wolfie, 5yr old german shepherd and the newest addition to the family, Nala, a 7mth old Bengal mix kittie. Jake lost his battle on 11/9/2009, almost 8 weeks after his surgery. We will never forget our sweet golden angel… http://jakesjou.....ipawds.com ….. CANCER SUCKS!
Magic's mum, I am so sorry you are experiencing the dreaded "cough" with Magic. I know the day I spot blood I will be a mess and have to try and pick myself up off the ground, but I will have Jerry's spirit in the back of my mind walking me through it... There have been a lot of brave owners on here and pooches that fought strong after the lung mets so try not to lose hope. Our babies are fighters!!!!
Well Koda has sort of started what you are explaining with the choking noise. It is like he is trying to clear his throat... When I heard it the first time I said to my housemate "OMG I think that was a cough" and we just both sat there staring at Koda wondering if he was going to do it again. It has happened a handful of times since and is sometimes associated with what seems to be blowing a sneeze out of his nose at the same time.... SO as I am writing this I still don't know if it was a "cough" or him choking a little, or if they are related.
We did lung Xrays at 3 months and then 6 months and they came up with no mets obvious/large enough to see on an Xray. Koda is now 10 months post amp last week (yay!!) and seems to be enjoying life.
And I know one thing is for sure, I am enjoying him and his ways, een if it is bin diving every chance he gets. It is so hard to get angry at him 🙂
Well we hope Magic gets good news at the Vet.
Storm and Koda
Hey Diane, how's Magic doing today?
