Yup - I'm in. Do I have to wait until I "officially" turn 50? 'cause I'm still riding out the last 6 months of 49 ......

"Going Dog" def: living every day in the moment
"It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them. And every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are."

Please take notice how Rene and I have not jumped in!
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
what, you think you were going to escape the club somehow?? HA! get in here sister, water's fine...most of the time - if you ignore the broken body parts, the sagging body parts, the body parts you are SURE can't POSSIBLY belong to you, the body parts you try to escape...that follow you - you know which ones THOSE all are...but the alternative is worse!!
I think anyone willing to come in early will certainly be welcomed. I mean, after all, you bring the average DOWN!

I'm 53 and just got told I have the chest (and they weren't talking about my boobs) of an 80 year old and can't pump my perfectly good lungs adequately so I'm always running out of breath...very frustrating. Maybe I need a corset LOL!!! So how did we get talking about Our problems? But I came really close to dying 10 years ago so I'm not about to complain! Our lucky pups to not understand age!

She looked at me like I was wearing her missing leg. Then the encouraging began… "Come on, Soph, come on …." (my son climbing up the stairs….) Sophie looking at both of us like we are well and truly insane. I'm pushing her back end – he's pulling on her collar. NO WAY…. So – yeah ….. hellllooooo ?!!! Sophie walked back into the house – the stairs went back into the box.
OK gals, I swear this was a total coincidence, but today a pawrent posted this on our Tripawds Facebook Page :
"Here is Kayla using the Otto-step. She is our four-legged dog with three different types of cancer. She survived the first two, but lymphoma is causing her to slow down a bit, but she still loves to go for rides in the truck and uses her step. We bought the Otto-step 5 years ago from the product designers and "Otto" himself. It is lightweight, fairly small sized, and very durable. Our three dogs use it readily, saving unnecessary strain on shoulders, knees, and hips."I've asked this pawrent to come here and give her tips for getting all three of her dogs to use the step, hopefully she will. I realize this dog is a quadruped but I don't think that has a lot to do with the dog's willingness to use it. And of course, Tripawds can do anything a four legger can!
Meanwhile we were saving this for a Downloads post, but here's an Otto-Step training guide that might help if you haven't seen it already.

I'm looking back through this topic and I'm truly thinking all the moderators should be fired. If we were moderating other forums, we would have brought a couple of topics back to topic a LONG time ago. This is such a fun place, even with all the stress

No worries, it's all good. I think it's great to see people laughing and being so lighthearted here, dog knows we all need it!

Hi – my dog Kayla is the one pictured with the Otto-step from earlier today. We originally got it around the time that our lab/newfy, Jazz, had knee surgery. Jazz absolutely wanted to jump around it instead of using it to aid her into the car… so my husband and I stood on either side of the Otto step, blocking any other way in. We first used a treat to get her onto the step and taught her to actually sit on the step, and wait for a command until we used treat to get her to the tailgate. Jazz was easily motivated with food, so she was pretty easy to train. About a year earlier, Jazz, although very athletic, missed her jump into the truck and whacked her head very hard.. she was in an emergency hospital in an oxygen cage for 2 days with a serious concussion… so yet another reason to use a controlled step up situation to get the dogs in the car. Tana was the most difficult to train. She came to an emergency vet clinic that I worked at — she was floating down the Tanana River here in Fairbanks, hanging onto a log. When they fished her out, they discovered a gunshot wound that went all the way through her neck. She is remarkably lucky, but as a result couldn't place her pads on her front feet.. she tried to walk on her knuckles. With time and persistence, she learned to walk normally again. But, she was therefore very timid about climbing things, anytime she'd have unsure footing. She was only about 6 months old… and we enrolled her in a training course with an agility course. It was fun for her to interact with the other dogs, and it taught her to trust us (and herself) as we coached her through tunnels and see-saws, etc. The same encouraging technique worked with the step… it just took her longer to use it without encouragment than our other two. Nowadays she runs on all 4 and you only notice a mis-step at the end of a very long hike, when she tires. Kayla took to the step readily. Currently, she goes to work with us every day, as the drugs she is on as pallitive treatment for lymphoma cause her to urinate every couple hours. She uses the step probably 6-7 times a day. Some days are better than others for her.. mostly she can handle the step without help, but sometimes she'll just stand near the step and look up at you for help. We lift her front legs onto the step, then her rears, then the fronts onto the tailgate, then the rears. Since she weighs 80+ pounds, this technique saves wear and tear on me too!
