3 trips out to pee and one more tonight after Downton Abbey. She still has not pooped..we are still needing to lift her back end with a sling. And I lead her on her leash but she is getting more confidence I think. And at times we can let loose the sling and she can stand on her own a little.  Tonight tho I gave her. Her tramadol at 5 pm and at 6pm we walked and she was a little dopey. She seems to be enthusiastic to go for a walk but then he does not know how to get up yet,  it. Is the 3rd day only.

i have non -skid mats on the floor which really help. And I'm alternating dog beds so. She is not on the same spots..

did anyone need to help the dog up for a long time?.

Although I didn't have to help Happy Hannah up at day three, many, many here have done that...and even longer.

Many, including my Happy Hannah, would pretty much freeze if I tried to put a sling under her. As Maddie continues to improve....and make no mistake about....she IS improving...you'll be able to start using the sling just to help her stand, then she'll start moving on her own. In another day or two...and when she isn't so drugged, you might try getting her up and out, release the sling and move to the side and see if she walks then...maybe use a treat.

But yes, it is not unusual at all for dogs to need help at this point in the recovery....three days....yeah...very, very early.

WAIT!! WE HAVE AN IMPROVEMENT TO CELELBRATE!! HAPPY PEE PEE DANCING GOING ON!!!! Good job Maddie!!! She still may not poop for another couple of days...OWEE! But let us know....another improvement to celebrate!!

Stay connected! Celebrate the little victories!! She is improving!!!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Wowwee for Day Three?! YAY!

Things are sounding pretty darn good overall. Yes, lots of dogs need assistance getting around for the first week or so. Keep in mind that your dog shouldn't be doing anything but getting up a few times a day to go potty, and that's it. Not only do the pain meds make them dopey and not willing to move a lot, but amputation recovery take a lot of energy all by itself. Check with your vet but most times vets just want dogs to rest rest rest. The pooping will happen and you'll be sooo hoppy. You can try speeding things along by adding a tsp or so of metamucil flakes, olive oil or pumpkin pulp to meals.

Sounds like Maddie is doing great! I found that Lily tired VERY easily in the early days of recovery and while I didn't have to help her get up every time, I would have to help her out quite a bit as the day progressed and she had made more trips to the go potty or change napping spots. It's going to take some time for Maddie to get her strength back but she will get there!

Lily the Great Dane (she was actually a lot more than just "Great") joined our family as an ornery puppy on December 20, 2005 and changed our lives forever. She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in early May of 2014 and her right rear leg was amputated on May 8, 2014. She sailed through 5 rounds of Carboplatin and 15 weeks of Pallladia. She hopped on 3 legs like she was born to it and continued to fight cancer with grace, valor and an abundant sense of humor...and always a *giant* smile on her face. Lily had two small nodules on her lungs but was brought short by a brain tumor in late December, 2014. Lily earned her wings on December 28, 2014 and we miss her terribly every day. http://lilyt.tripawds.com

Woohoo! Congratulations to Maddie as it sounds like she is doing well. As long as she is eating, drinking, and peeing she is doing grrrrreat! Yup, all she needs to be doing right now is resting and healing, and then resting and healing some more. Sending lots of healing strength to Maddie from the Oaktown Packsmiley

Harmony didn't need any help getting up, but when she would drop from exhaustion, we would have to help her from there. It's funny though, she would do that until she saw a squirrel and then she found all kinds of energy! LOL! I sometimes wondered if she was faking it! (smiling and laughing)

Harmony became a Tripawd on 10/21/14 (MCT). She left us way too soon on 11/1/14.
