I guess she has some pain meds so that will make her feel better.

Thanks all, I appreciate your kind words so much, more than you know.  I'm trying not to have regrets (should have amputated sooner, should have started chemo sooner, or not started it at all to avoid the side effects these past few, final weeks).  And I'm trying hard to just soak in these last few days with her.

We came home with Tramadol and Deramaxx, so hopefully these provide her with some relief.  It's hard to tell right now, as she is pretty doped up from the sedation for the x-rays.

I'm petrified of letting her linger too long.  I'm awaiting my regular vet's thoughts on the x-rays, but we're leaning toward helping her reach the end at some point this weekend.  The vet tech at our regular vet (a friend from college) will be coming to the house, to make it as un-traumatic as possible.

We have always celebrated her birthday on the 4th of July (you never know the real birthday of these pound puppies, but we got her late August, at around 8 weeks old, and tying her birthday to a holiday seemed like a festive idea!).  We'll have a 9th birthday blowout for her - anything she feels like eating, she will get!  And hoping for some sunny days so she can lay around surveying her yard, which she loves to do.

This part is just.so.hard.

Oh this breaks my heart! I'm so very sorry, I can't believe I just read your terrible news. Take comfort in knowing that she has a loving family to be by her side when she needs it most. What a life you have had together and still have, until that day comes.

It's human to have regrets but for now, try to focus on the time you have left. Save the tears and the heartache for sometime in the future. Right now, it's time to celebrate her life and all the gifts she has given you. Be strong, and lean on us.

I'm so sorry.

And since I have been remiss in posting pics, here is a link to our photographer's blog entry for a photo shoot we had done shortly after the amputation, right before the chemo.  Lili is our gray dog (ignore our yellow dog Peter who is such a ham!).  These select pics don't show her in all her tripawd glory, but we made sure to get some great ones of her hopping through the yard.

So glad we had these done.  And for anyone in the Atlanta area, I cannot recommend Leesia Teh enough!  Awesome experience all around.

This pictures are wonderful! yeah, yo can tell Peter is a ham.

But the pure joy in Lili's eyes....the "grin" on her face....you gave her that joy and you gave her the smiles!

This is so heartbreaking and just not expected.. As Jerry said...and it's hard...now is not the time to waste one second of energy on regrets......we'll help you with that later. I will say though, had yo NOT done chemo you would have beaten yourself up and I think the doses you did do may have even brought her a little extra time. As far as "sooner"? No, I'm afraid it's pretty clear it had already started it's destruction. But the amutatin gave you so e of the most precious weeks you could ask for. Didn't mean to get on that track. Like everyone e here, we just wish we could do "something"---anything..to ease your sadness, but we can't.

You will know when it's time....and right now, it is NOT! Right. owls your time to love, applaud, rub her tummy, scratch her ears and give her all the ice cream she wants!

The meds WILL help and she WIL feel better. Take it moment by moment. Right ow she's got the anesthesia buzz going on. So don't give her ice cream now, she won't remember she got it!

Didn't quite realize how large Lil is! The picture of her on the sofa gives you the size perspective. Thank you so much for taking the time to share those gloriously hap pictures. I will be going back to look at them a lot this week with gratitude for her gracing us with her presence.

Wrapping you up in the arms of the tripawd community. We are sending you strength and the "knowing" that Lil's life is one of meaning and purpose and your bond is forever and unbreakable.

Just looked at the pictures again...what a pair those two are!

I live in Virginia and I think you've been plummeted with rain like we have the last several days. It's supposed to start clearly off tomorrow and then be pretty sunny Ito the middle of next week.

Lil will have her sunny days. She will!

You may be pleasantly surprised the positive effect the pain meds and sun have on her. And then add her birthday party on top of that.....yeah, she'll definitely feel better! Tired, but better!

We love you and are sending the healing warmth of the sun straight to your house.

I can't give you any better words than those already sent, but I add my love, thoughts, prayers, and hugs, too.  The pictures are gorgeous, and show a world of love that surrounds Lili and Peter.  When we were faced with losing our 2 elderly German Shepherds within 6 months of each other 2 years ago, our holistic vet told me that they knew they were loved, and that love would always do the right thing for them.  Not always the easy thing, but always the right thing.

Our primary vet is on vacation this week, but I did speak to my vet tech friend who is holding down the fort at the office with a stand-in vet.  She received the report from the specialist and was less pessimistic than we both were upon initially hearing the news.  The specialist's report doesn't say anything about how far advanced the bony lesions are; just says that we're discontinuing chemo and starting pain management (and a fairly low dose at that).  Still waiting on the X-rays to be sent over.

These bony lesions are just like the OSA tumor in the first instance - fast growing and I'm sure very painful.  You also run the same risks of bone deterioration to the point of breakage.  Can you imagine a broken back or pelvis?  That sounds horrible and not a risk I'm willing to take.  But, the vet tech cautions that we should hold off on final decisions until 1) we see the X-rays (shadows, like her primary tumor first presented?  Or much further advanced, as her primary tumor was 3 or 4 months later?  Her spine and pelvis were clear about 3 months ago when she was last X-rayed); and 2) we see how she does on the pain meds.

That anesthesia buzz did not wear off yesterday.  She actually is moving around a bit better -- when she's not totally spaced out.  She did sleep like a baby last night and hasn't needed Tramadol since 8 p.m.  Soon, she'll get more Tramadol and the Deramaxx!  We'll see how the next couple of days go and how the X-rays look when they're finally passed along to us.  We have terrible rain forecast for the next 3 days, though it's nice it will be a bit cooler -- here's hoping for a few sunny days in the not-so-distant future that Miss Lili feels well enough to enjoy.  smiley

I applaud your courage in facing the inevitable before it happens, but I like your vet tech's advice, wait until you have more information before you make any major decisions. It could happen quickly or slowly, so it's good to be prepared but for now I would hold off till your regular vet is back.

Another idea: do you have access to hospice care in your area? That's always a good idea in situations like this because the vet/tech can help you adjust her medication accordingly so she isn't in any pain, and give her a good quality of life for as long as possible.

Give her a big big hug from us!

Well, everything is relative....and "relatively speaking" your vet tech did give you a little better news. If everything was clear several months ago, this "may" not be too far advanced at this point.

Your courage astounds me. Your commitment to Lil" is unwavering and she KOWS it!

Glad she slept we'll last. night as that always helps one's well being.

Yep, went back and looked at those pictures again .....can't help myself when the subject....subjects. are all so cute.....you and your husband are "cutie pies" Too:-) :-)

The weather report was clearly wrong here today....downpour all day. I know when the such. comes out and Lil gets out in it she will feel better.....I know she will!

Who WS it that she barked at so energetically a while back? The UPS man....postman? Bring 'em on over and watch her roar:-) :-)

we are here for you....please lean on us and you just stay focused on loving your Lil'.....that's ALL she cares about!!

Tripawd circle of love surrounding you with the gift of being in the moment and "being more dog....Lil'
