Hi!  Bedford...is that your last name or do you reside in Bedford, NY?  I'm near!!!

To help raise moods, we found it really helpful to have special people over.  Jackson's friends came for a visit, which ended up wiping him out for hours, but when here, Jackson was jazzed!  Jackson had no idea he had had major surgery!  Can some of Louie's favorite people come over?  What about a little drive to a favorite place for an hour of diversion and fresh air?

Good luck!  He's sooooo cute!

~ Katy & Jackson

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12.  Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ!  No side effects.  We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments.  He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors!  Our love. Our funny little guy!

Hi Louie and Whitney

I'm sorry to hear that Louie got the dreaded diagnosis of cancer and has to deal with all of this instead of just playing and getting belly rubs.  It's a big shock and as everyone else has said, the first 2 weeks are roughest.  After that most dogs get the sparkle back in their eyes so hang in there; it will get better!

I wanted to answer your t-shirt question.  We used a regular adult t-shirt for awhile and just tied the excess material into a knot on my pup's back.  For the most part that worked ok.  The only down side was probably that we had to change the shirts every 2-3 days because the cotton would stretch out and the short sleeves would start to slide down her front arm and get caught on her paw.  See pic below.

We eventually figured out that we'd have better luck with a smaller shirt so we started shopping the kids department at Walmart.  The pink shirt in the picture below is a girls medium and it worked great!  Any kid's t-shirt is better than an adult shirt but I found the more tailored cuts were less likely to ride up.

Good luck!  Louie is so lucky to have you, Whitney!

Thanks for the input Claudia. Do you mind if we put the photo of her eating in our Gallery? It's a great example of improvising, we're all for that!

I wish I would have thought of the kids size shirt! We pinned the excess so it didn't drag.  We had to change her t-shirt a couple times a day because she would go out in the snow and get it all wet while laying down.

Your pictures of JG are so sweet.  Melts my heart.

Hugs,

Amy & Spirit Libby

Liberty (Libby) was diagnosed with OSA on 1-22-13.  Right front amputation on 1-31-13. No IV Chemo. Metronomic Therapy started 2-19-13 along with supplements and some home cooking. Lungs clear until 1-06-14.  She's still her happy, hoppy, bossy self.  Living the dog life to the fullest and a proud Winter Warrior. :) RIP my Libby 4-21-03 to 3-19-14

Because Ty was a boy, he peed on anything not tied up. I used an elastic pony tail holder to tie up extra. I also bought a youth size. I bought a large though, a medium is a way better idea. Amy, same thing, Ty would lay in the snow and be all wet when he came in.

TY GUY, Best Black Lab ever! Diagnosed  and had amp in January, 2014. Kicked MRSA's butt. Earned his angel wings on April 16, 2014. Run Free my boy and don't forget a shoe. Ty is a proud member of the " April Angels". Ty sent us Daryl, a Tripawd rescue in Sept. of 2016. Daryl is 5 +or -. We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.

A big THANKYOU to the whole Tripawds community- your support and encouragement have really really really gotten us over the hump of the first week!
It has been seven days since his procedure, and Louie dog is out of shock, coming out of the blues- and slowly but surely returning to himself. Or the new version of himself---- day 5 he started wearing a small size soft cotton polo shirt over his thundershirt.
He also snook by us and ran down a set of steps to meet his human papa- quite a feat!
Day 6 he got his toys out and played with them a bit,
And finally today/ day 7 he finally figured out to poop!
Every day is a bit better. We are so happy to have him and so proud of all of his new/ old accomplishments that we can't stop kissing and treating him.
Viva Louie and his Tripawd friends!

Thank you for the kind words!

Here are detailed instructions for adding photos to forum posts. When using the visual editor on your computer, paste the image file location into the "Source" field. On a tablet or mobile phone, just paste it on a line by itself for others to click or we can embed it for you. If you do not already share photos online somewhere, you can start a free Tripawds blog and upload them to you Media Library.

Hope this helps!
