Hi Dawn, just checking in on Fallon and the kidney issues....as you may know, I have extensive experience with this. I will always wonder if the cytoxin (cyclophosphamide) caused Nitro's failing kidneys - but I will never know for sure. He was on this for about 10 months before the cystitis presented. If Fallon was on it for just a short time, I'd have my doubts that that was the cause. Even after 10 months no vet could tell me this was the reason for kidney failure. I feel maybe it DID contribute, but I feel his age was the greater reason.

Nitro lived for quite awhile with failing kidneys...we changed his food to Hill's KD - which he hated. Eventually he had IV fluids to flush out his system starting about every 3 months, then progressing to about once a month. I learned that kidney failure burns a lot of calories, and needed to feed him more that I ever did - while he still had an appetite. Eventually his appetite decreased to where we gave him an appetite stimulant. BUT hopefully you are very far from all this. I just tell you these things, because kidney failure CAN be managed, somewhat. I'm happy to share my knowledge with you. Good luck, and really, try not to panic just yet.

Paula and Warrior Angel Nitro

P.S. My vet also did not prescribe Lasix when he was on the metronomic therapy

Nitro 11 1/2  yr old Doberman; right front amp June 2014. Had 6 doses carboplatin, followed by metronomic therapy. Rocked it on 3 legs for over 3 years! My Warrior beat cancer, but couldn't beat old age. He crossed the Bridge peacefully on July 25, 2017, with dignity and on his terms.  Follow his blog entitled "Doberman's journey"

Proteinuria does not always mean kidney failure...it could also be secondary to a UTI or other issue.  Let us know how high the ratio is and if her blood values (BUN and creatinine) are elevated.  If her protein/creatinine ratio is high then your dog's diet might need to be modified and she should have her blood pressure checked.

Another quick update--I tend to worry too much for nothing and get myself worked up over areas outside my expertise instead of respecting the process and relying on my experts.

I got a VM from our local vet that Fallon's values on the UPC were in the normal range, and he's not recommending anything.  He is faxing to the oncologist as they requested.  I left a message there to see if there's more that Dr Sue needs based on this and get more feedback and  information, but I'm guessing we'll probably just keep keeping on until our next appointment.  I hope, anyway.

Again, so appreciative for the feedback here--will let you know if I find out more.

Fallon's left front leg was amputated due to osteosarcoma on 10/11/17.

That is just the best news ... got my biggest grin going on here!!!🤗🤗🤗

I will take that any day of the week, honest!

We all worry, and after knowing what we know i think our knee-jerk response is always going to be oh crap, the other shoe is falling, I KNEW it would happen!!!

Not really so funny but true story...  I have been really bad about updating Huck's blog but other than ii hav not figured out how to trim his nails and come out in one piece he is doing spectacular. Since i took him in and realized his leg needed to come off i have worried myself to death about him getting outside. I didn't open up the room that overlooks his old hideout until the beginning of April i think, so it was closed from September to about April. I finally got the nuggets up to do it and he loves it out there. He bird watches, fish watches, firefly and dragonfly watches, you get the picture. David was coming in from the yard last week and for the first time Huck bolted toward the door. I didn't see it but when he told me i was almost physically sick. Just typing it now makes my stomach reel. He hasn't tried that with me, i hope he never does.

We all worry, can't help it, not gonna stop it either. All we can do is support each other, through the good, bad, funny, and sad. We all get it, that's why we have that special bond.

Big hugs, I'm really glad Fallon is ok ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Just closing the loop on this one.  All is well.  I spoke with our oncologist, and as Renee mentioned, testing was just a precaution--see something, say something!!  As I had hoped, we are just going to continue our current metronomic protocol + supplements until we go back for our next appointment in 2 MONTHS!!!

Thanks again for all the support, helpful hints, and understanding heart
