Biospy results are in = osteosarcoma. It's what we thought. Ugh. Oncology appt is this Thurs, so we'll get the low down on Jackson's condition and treatment options.
Today was his first day he actually rested on his stump's side! He fell asleep all curled up in our old king-sized down comforter!
Meet Jackson, our handsome man:

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12. Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ! No side effects. We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments. He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors! Our love. Our funny little guy!

Hmmm... this is usually caused by an invalid image URL. Here are detailed instructions for embedding images in forum posts. If you don't a;ready share images online somewhere, you might consider starting a free blog so you can upload photos to your Image Library here.

Jackson is looking great. Good to hear his recovery is going well. He is such a handsome boy. He looks so content relaxing on the sofa. Doesn't seeing him doing so well just bring a smile to your face? I look at Cadence everyday and just smile and I thank god we have another day with her. I'm sorry you got that diagnosis. I'm sure you and the oncologist will come up with a good plan for Jackson to kick this cancer in the butt. We have our last treatment of Carbo next Thursday. If you have any chemo questions please let me know and keep us updated on how Jackson is doing.

Oh, what a sweet face! Looks like he is doing well.
Sorry to hear about the official Dx. Even when you are expecting it, it still sucks to have it be confirmed.
Good luck at the oncologist appt.

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!
I'm so glad you posted pics! He looks like he's saying "Why are you fussing all over me Ma? Geez!"

We're back from the oncologist. We had a really good appt and so glad we went. Getting experts involved helps tremendously! We opted for chemo. We want to give it all we've got and he is a great candidate for it: he's only 8, has no other health issues to contend with, the hospital is a quick drive down the highway, and side effects are nil and/or will be well managed. We do 3 treatments (carbo) then a chest xray to determine if we stay the course or no, and aim for a min of 4 treatments, with the option to do 6 total. An appt will take about 45min and that includes an exam and bloodwork each time. We were sent home with 2 antinausea meds and an antibiotic. The nausea meds are up to Jackson if he needs them. The antibiotic he'll get at night for 10d. This will help his bone marrow and white blood cell count stay in check, plus the antibiotic has some anti-cancer properties. We'll keep him on 50mg rimadyl forever, as that has anticancer properties, too (it's an NSAID and can be part of metronomic therapies).
4 vs 6 treatments: she said there isn't a lot of evidence that 6 is superior to 4. She did not mention the new (as of Oct 2012), official guidelines for doing 4 treatments. We'll re-evaluate this as we approach the 4th treatment.
She wants Jackson off antioxidants the day before, of, and day after chemo. After that, she's OK with what we want to do. She encouraged us to see a holisic vet for more help or insight. Right now, we plan to use high doses of Omega3 oil, an immune booster, an Essiac formula, a glucos/chrondr joint supplement, and of course the rimadyl.
Vaccinations? She says that since this isn't a cancer of the immune system, it's fine to proceed with vaccinations and using tick preventive stuff. He's due this month for his shots. Upon deeper thought, I don't know how Jackson's immune system is not involved at this point? Because of that, I'll press for a more complete answer, or at the least have his titers checked before vaccinating. We may also wait a few months before vaccinating, or at least until chemo is done. We're inclined to not vaccinate right away, have his titers done, and when it's tick season here (we live ~30min away from Lyme, CT) giving him a Frontline-like product, maybe at a lower weight class?
So here were. We have a plan, we have an expert, and we feel good. Poor, but good. We're optimistic here that our little furry friend will fight this thing. We're giving it what we can!

Well that's terrific! Your onco vet sounds great, where are you going?
You'll find many holistic vets will say don't vaccinate especially during illness, while western ones say the opposite. Do you research and go with your gut. We opted out. Titers are a great compromise I think.

You have a great plan in place. Our Cadence is also doing Carbo. She gets her last treatment next Thursday. Our vet suggested we do 4 only due to the fact there is no proof showing that 4 is better than the 6 they used to do. Im trusting him on this and its good to hear another vet giving the same opinion. Cadence did fine with the chemo as Im sure Jackson will do.
Cadence was up for some of her vaccines a few months ago and we opted not to give them to her at this time. I was just to afraid with her undergoing chemo and her weakened immune system to chance it. Our vet agreed with us, so that made me feel better about the choice we made. We also chose not to put any flea/tick medicine on her. I looked on the Internet and am searching for a more natural method to use. Maybe someone on here can chime in with some info on a natural remedy to kill ticks and fleas.
Im so happy that Jackson is getting along so well and that you are moving forward with the treatments. Isn't it a relief to have a plan of action? It makes me feel like I have a little bit of control over this whole horrible cancer thing. Keep us updated. Sending Jackson lots of hugs and kisses.

Search our nutrition blog for fleas and ticks, lots of info there & in the forums too. I'd share links but its hard to do on my phone.

Wahoo, folks! As everyone was saying, about the time stitches come out, the magic starts to return! We played fetch tonight! Jackson went for his favorite ball (which he hasn't seen since late Oct) and wanted to play! At first we kicked it only a few feet, but he clearly wanted some air, so we tossed it up. He talked back to us and the ball (he hadn't yet vocalized since his surgery). He pranced. He pointed. He wiggled. He spun around. He was back!!!!! It lasted for about 5min, but they were the best 5min we've had in a long time. My heart is warm. He seemed so happy, so pleased with himself, too. WAHOOOOO! Our boy is more like himself!

Omg is he cute!!!!! It feels much better to have a plan right? Your onco sounds great!
Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. "Like" Jill's facebook page: https://www.fac.....tty?ref=hl Proud member of the WINTER WARRIORS!!!! Her blog can be read at http://jillsjou.....ipawds.com. xoxo
Cute! Cute! Cute! May we use one of these in our photo gallery?
