Hi all! I'm back from my trip and I'm happy to report that Jackson's pee-problem is just about solved. I'd say we're at 95% improvement! YEY! Today marks 6 WEEKS of being off cytoxan. Holy cow, I never thought it would or could take this long. Awful. He had many accidents in the house, but they tapered off and ended the third week in. He stayed on Cranimals and TractEast until we ran out (4-5 weeks) and I don't think we need them anymore. I suspect by next week, we'll go back to his normal amounts of MSM and Rimadyl, too. We'll also head back to his onco to have a checkup and she'll probably bump up his luekeran dose (b/c she kept it low while we were away).
Would I try cytoxan again? I would, b/c it's cheaper, had more stats, and some dogs really tolerate it well! I would advise, though, to any one who's going with cytoxan, to know exactly what the symptoms of a UTI and cystitis are, so at the first sign, you stop. I had my head in the sand and think Jackson was symptomatic for about a week before we stopped it. I know we gave Jackson every chance and opportunity to not have problems (MSM, loads of fresh water, frequent walks), but this med does this!
If you're considering cytoxan or luekeran, ask yourself and your pup (or kitty!) if a 6 week pee-problem with accidents and discomfort is something you and your pal can handle. It's not a given it'll happen, but luekeran supposedly doesn't have this risk...

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12. Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ! No side effects. We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments. He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors! Our love. Our funny little guy!
Welcome home from the trip of a lifetime! I loved the cheetah video. How cool!
But even better is the fact that Jackson has almost totally recovered. YAY! What a relief for everyone. We are very, very hoppy to read this.
I'm not sure if you saw this post it may have run when you were away:
Cyclophosphamide vs. Chlorambucil in Metronomic Chemotherapy
We will be running another post on this topic soon, an interview with oncologist Dr. Intile, who prefers using Leukeran (chlorambucil) for metronomics . Stay tuned!

So glad to hear Jackson is getting better. And wanted to tell you we've missed you, welcome back.
Adelaide is a young tripawd Husky, from an injury. Her amp was on 10/1/12. She has 4 sisters, Aissa (a senior border collie/chow), Maggie May (a puppy Great Pyrenees), Mathilde and Morrigan and 1 baby brother, Bagheera. Hello! For those following Jackson's pee problems and switch to leukeran....
I just heard from his onco and his blood and urine is all back to normal! Not even any microscopic blood in his pee. Whoop whoop!!! Let's see, to this day, it's been 7 weeks OFF cytoxan. He's been on leukeran for about 5 weeks, too. We were wondering if 1.5mg/day of it after 5 weeks would do anything to his WBC. His numbers are normal and all OK. However, I did ask for specifics and there was actually a downward trend, but still within the normal range. So, we'll watch that. He'll get new urine and blood tests in a month.
A good day! It's nice that his clinical signs match the lab tests and I'm hopeful that the increase to 3mg/day of leukeran won't impact him. As usual around here, I'll keep a watchful eye!

OH! This is great news! 'Been waiting for a "pee" post! YAAAAAAAAAY Jackson!
Happy Hannah is just finishing her antibiodic today It wasn't til your post last week that I definitely decided NO to the Cytoxan and go with Luekeran instead. Just not willing to risk these kinds of flare-ups I haven't spoken to the onco. any further on this after she originally kinda poo-pooed the idea originally and said let's get the tap, clear it up, etc., etc. first. These "people" don't seem to have any sense lf urgency about anything! Of course she's out til Monday
I'm so relieved for you Katy! I kkw this has been Worrisome and frustrating" to say the least!!
We celebrate pee updates around here! Passing out the Crananimals in Jackson's honor......you know what I mean.....the cranberry vitamins:-)
HUGE GIGANTIC HUGS TO YOU VOTH!
