Yesss! You got it, Max is showing you how to live in the Now. He's not letting anything get in his way of having fun and neither should you. You're on the right track. Yay!

So stitches came out on Friday, naughty boy is still licking the wound site given half a chance so will have to suffer the 'cone of shame ' for a bit longer nevertheless the vet is very happy with how it looks. Bloods were taken for a white blood cell count when we finally get the results from the lab and know what we are treating.
The vet suggested weaning him off the tramadol now, I don't think he's in massive pain but realistically he must be in some, is two weeks post op too soon?
Jack (sorry I called you Max yesterday) YAAAAAAAAAY FOR STITCHES OUT!! Sorry about having to wear the cone a bit longer though!
Ahhh....the age old question of when to taper off drugs. Okay..here we go..EVERY DOG IS DIFFERENT! I know you get tired of hearing that.
It seems that most vets thi k the two week mark is a good time to take dogs off pain meds. Happy Hannah fell I to that scenario. It didn't work for her. I jad her back in pain meds for another week. If I recall, it was reduced and...again..if I recall it just ended up being Gabapentin.
So jist try it with Jack as the vet suggested. Reduce it a d watch for any signs of pain and you can always adjust his doses accordingly.
Glad to nere he's doing so well. Keep on rockin' Jack!
Hugs!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
What a relief to get the stitches out! Cone of shame! Poor Jack! Luckily Nitro left his incision alone, so a t-shirt was enough. Two weeks seems a little soon to be going off pain meds; I think nitro was on them for at least 3-4weeks. Maybe keep a close eye on him, you don't want to back slide due to pain. Keep up the good work Jack!

Nitro 11 1/2 yr old Doberman; right front amp June 2014. Had 6 doses carboplatin, followed by metronomic therapy. Rocked it on 3 legs for over 3 years! My Warrior beat cancer, but couldn't beat old age. He crossed the Bridge peacefully on July 25, 2017, with dignity and on his terms. Follow his blog entitled "Doberman's journey"
"Be good, mama loves you".....run free my beautiful Warrior
Most dogs start to come off pain pills anywhere from 10-14 days. But like Paula said, you can always re-up the doeeseif you notice he seems to be in pain when you start the withdrawals.
Glad the stitches are out! Maybe try putting an anti-itch, vet-approved topical on the incision area to ease the itchiness of it. We like anything by Vetericyn.

Not necessarily. The majority of pups get off all their meds at 14± days post op. Jerrry started getting less tramadol around day 12. Follow Doctor's orders, and please keep us posted!

Gave him both his doses of tramadol over the weekend, will try and reduce from tomorrow, just one in the evening and see how he gets on
Today he has been fab and as a treat(!) we did a little bit of rally training to see how he coped with it, he loved it wagging his rather bald tail and doing all the simple exercises I asked of him
Just so proud of how my little man is bouncing back, fingers crossed he can continue being happy and content with his lot
Way to go Jack! You are one spunky pup!
I know it .makes him feel good to do some "normal" things that he's always enjoyed. I know it makes you feel good too!!
Good job Jack!!

Jack is looking so good, today he had a massage, guess what he had a few uncomfortable muscle groups well he is running around like a happy mad dog. We reduced the tramadol to one a day today, now to hope he isn't uncomfortable.
Unfortunately despite him looking fabulous his diagnosis has been confirmed as osteosarcoma, so unfortunate 🙁 but we will persevere, he will live forever
"Happy mad dog"!!! I love it!
Well if he shows any indicators that he's having pain you can always start back up. Hopefully not. Monitor his activity to make sure he doesn't overdo things and he should be fine.
I'm sorry about the osteo diagnosis. It's a heartbreaker but I can see it's not going to stop you or Jack from living life to the fullest! Keep it up!
