Hello Dear Tripawd Family
I thought to post this to find out what other ways I can get our Lylee Girl to take her numerous pills every AM & PM. She is on a lot of supplements as well as a prophylactic antibiotic and carprofen twice a day. THe cream cheese was great 'cos I could smoosh it all around 2 or 3 pills at one time and she was happy to take them. Now she says I know what you are doing and I don't want to do it anymore. Even cream cheese without pills is a no-no for her.
We are using stinky cat fud but I think this is also has a limited 'I'll eat this' date.
Any and all ideas would be hugely appreciated!!
Thank you!

Sadie was a total chow hound that loved all food! I could put a pill in anything and she would eat it....until tramadol. For some reason, she would not take it in anything. The vet suggested pill pockets and they're amazing! They somehow disguise the smell of the pill and it was the only way I could get Sadie to take tramadol.
Sadie is my 9yr old Rott/Shepherd mix. Diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her right scapula 1/28/10. Our brave girl had her amputation 2/13/10 and her last chemotherapy on 6/6/10. Unfortunately, a tumor appeared in her back right leg and on 10/7/2010 Sadie's earthly journey came to an end. On 10/24/2010 we adopted Ranger, a handsome Rott/Lab mix tripawd (got hit by a car) I think Sadie sent him to us.

Liver... Its gross and it smells weird when you cook it, but my girls LOVE it. They would die for liver -- chicken, beef, they don't care... It's soft enough that you can embed pills into it and stinky enough to cover up the medicine smell. Careful though, if you give too much initially, your pup could get diarrhea from the fat content if they're not use to eating it.

PS: Our meds go into the food. Rio eats Honest Kitchen plus kibble and random meat, cottage cheese, etc. I call it doggie soup. And her antibiotics, chemo, etc., just go into her food. I only have to make sure one of her sisters don't crowd in on the action before Rio has a chance to finish her meal/meds.

well if anyone has any ideas on that topic that work I would love to hear it too.I have been giving Coops meds to him the hard way twice a day for several months now. Poke all of em as far down as I can get em then hold his mouth shut and stroke his throat until he swallows. Sometimes he fakes me out and "swallows" and I find him wearing his meds on his chest, but I have gotten pretty good at knowing when they are gone for real. Immediately after he swallows everything, he gets a real treat. Sorry  I dont have an answer for you, if you find a good one Please let me know.

Coops Dad - I was drinking coffee and choked when I read your post about him wearing his meds.
I used peanut butter for Trouble for years and years. I use hot dogs cut into chunks for Duke, he's a lot more pill savvy. You toss a chunk without pills, toss a chunk without pills, toss one with pills, toss a chunk without and you're done. The theory with the hot dog is that if they are going to chew one it will be the first or second, the third and forth they will just swallow. So far it works for Duke, but he doesn't have to take daily meds either.
Shanna & Spirit Trouble ~ Trouble gained her wings 3/16/2011, a 27 1/2 month cancer survivor, tail wagging. RIP sweetheart, you are my heart and soul. Run free at Rainbow Bridge.

Liver sausage (braunschweiger) or Easy Cheese spray cheese has worked for all of my dogs. The liver sausage in particular is the perfect consistency to shape around the pills.
Shanna's idea of mixing in treats with pills and treats without pills works wonders for dogs that catch on to what you are doing!

We have used everything with Zip. Right now she is off the Bill-Jac but usually she will return to that after the yucky taste her chemo gives her for a few days. We give lots of pills here at our house with up to ten dogs some days [visitors, not residents] sometimes its pill pockets, sometimes peanut butter, put the pills on the backside of the pb, we also keep the pills in the refrigerator so the smell is not too noticeable. We have tried hot dogs, string cheese, ice cream [yes, you must be quick, the first bites are free and then when mouths are cold, in goes the pills] cheese whiz, cooked meat, hard-boiled eggs but most  of the time first bites are tiny but pill free and then we increase speed to distract and for some of the dogs we use other begging dogs to 'encourage' them. Maybe I should write a book 'Pill-popping 4Paws or Less'.. FDA probably would come to see me! Good luck and remember, what works one day might not work the next!
we have been very successful with honest kitchen 'thrive' i make up a batch and keep it in the fridge. gayle and brother sam both take pills in spoonfuls of thrive and don't hesitate. plus, it's good for them too!

Life is good, so very, very good!!! Gayle enjoyed each and every moment of each and every wonderful day (naps included). She left this world December 12, 2011 – off on a new adventure.

Wow, these are all great ideas! I might have to resort to them but for now liver sausage is working. We've used Velveeta too. But Tate was like Sadie, nothing worked with Tramadol after it started bothering him. In his case, not even pill pockets. We did the Coopsdad method but Tate would just hold it in his mouth and stare at me and refuse to swallow, "I am NOT putting this %&$^ in my body, Mom." Luckily, we were about done with it when it got to that point.

TATE ~ Forever in our hearts.
We do peanut butter for most pills. Both of our dogs will do anything for peanut butter. Chili Dawg wouldn't do Tramadol in peanut butter though, so I would have to hide it in hot dogs, chicken, ham, or spray cheese.
Diagnosed with OSA: 5/2/2011 Ampuversary: 5/11/2011 OSA returned in hip: 8/26/2011
Chili Dawg crossed the Rainbow Bridge on 8/30/2011 & is now pain free. He was my heart dog, and I miss him every day.

Yep, the stinky liver sausage worked for us too. And I too agree with Shanna's idea. Mix it up so they never know what's on the menu.

Oh! This is fabulous! So many great ideas 🙂
I agree about tramadol, Lylee hated it!! And wouldn't take them with anything. I ended up using empty gelatin capsules to put them in and then using food to disguise them - only way I could them down her.
I used to mix the pills in with a yummy mix of Honest Kitchen Embark and Evo wet food, that lasted about a week.
Straight Evo venison canned food is working at the moment. Alternating with pills in one bite and then no pills in the next does work better.
Thank you!

I'm going to try making my own pill pockets this week, inspired by a recipe I saw online. Going to take freeze-dried chicken treats (you can get them at the pet store) and grind them to powder in the blender, then add a bit of flour, water, boullion, and oil in a saucepan over the stove to make something with a texture like play-doh. Supposedly one batch with 1/4c of ground chicken will make about 30 pockets that you can keep in the fridge.
If it works, I'll post pics and a recipe 🙂
