I second guessed my decission until today. Buddy's front leg was amputated Feb 27 only 10 days after dicovering his bone was almost gone from cancer. today he is my shiney eyed little man again. Even lets angel knock him around a bit. I can tell the pain he had been suffering from is gone. (We all thought it was arthritis) He is a very small standard poodle and no one ever thought he would have osteosarcoma. The first few hours home he was a champ them the suffering began. Now he puts Angel to the test on his short walks. We have a wagon he has been using for months. Now he only uses it on the way out and walks on his own on the way home.
Yippeeee!
ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12. Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ! No side effects. We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments. He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors! Our love. Our funny little guy!
JD and I go back to the Oncologist and surgeon tomorrow to have his staples removed and most likely start Chemo. I'm a little nervous about it, been reading the Cancer Survival Guide which is helping and since he was eating a raw diet prior I'm glad to have a alternative that offers close to the same nutrients.
He's back to his old self barking at things and trying to chase the cats. But at least he can't pull on a leash quite as much now.
Yay for JD! This is wonderful news! Look out kitties, here comes JD!
Reading up on your options gives you confidence that you didn't have before, doesn't it? No matter what you decide, at least you know what your options are and you made an educated decision for your boy. Good luck tomorrow.

Ah, yes, the fabulous staple-removal day. Enjoy! May I suggest that after they are removed, you with your ever-vigilent eyes make sure they got them all? There was 1 remaining in Jackson! Instead of bringing him back to vet for the quick procedure, we left it in there (watching, of course, for problems). He had enough fuzz to obscure the staple. Let us know how the appt went and what your options are!

I had a surgeon leave a suture in MY head once, and when I told him he insisted I was imagining it, until I pointed it out to him! So, yes, good plan!
So JD had his appointment yesterday unfortunately he wasn't able to start Chemo because he seems to have a seroma around where the old leg used to be and his incision is seems to have gotten bigger over the past few days they are worrying about it being a site of infection. We are waiting until next week if it decreases to start Chemo, other wise they said he's doing great and his blood work looked good. Any suggestions to help decrease it? They said heat and massage
The oncologist wasn't going to remove his staples at first but the surgeon that came in said it was ok to do so I made sure they got them all and if they had decided noted to remove them I was going to borrow a staple remover from work and remove them since his incision was completely healed and probably so itchy.
Hi JD and Jodi----Not sure I have solutions for the seroma other than to tell you my Happy Hannah had lota and lots of fluid (seroma ) for almst two weeks and her surgery site stayed "angry" looking for awhile. I was given the same advice but she was so sore it was hared to be consistent with the ice/warm packs "they" didn't think there was an infection, just one of those things that sometimes happens with surgery. I was just able to start Hannah's chem yesterday (22 days after surgery) so you're still within a good time frame to start it. Sorry I couldn't be much help but I'm sure others can offer more.
The very best to you and JD. He's a fine looking young man!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
Hi! My jill had a seroma and they told me to heat pack/ice it in rotation for 20 minutes. Try that!
Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. "Like" Jill's facebook page: https://www.fac.....tty?ref=hl Proud member of the WINTER WARRIORS!!!! Her blog can be read at http://jillsjou.....ipawds.com. xoxo
I'm sorry you couldn't start but it's good they're taking that precaution. Try not to panic, seromas are usually nothing serious. Scroll through these wound care articles for tips about seromas, they should help you reduce it quickly.

I haven't been on here for what feels like forever time to play catch up! JD started Chemo two weeks ago a week ago his blood work showed that his white count was down but the Oncologist was happy with it. Yesterday he had a small fluid filled pocket that started draining fluid thicker than what it should be but not purulent drainage. Rushed him to the vet she poked around in the area and drainage started pouring out. They did bloodwork shows that he has an infection but is body is fighting it. Back to more dressing changes he's suppose to have another round of Chemo next week but I don't know if it will happen. He's on antibiotics and is lethargic and not eating much so he will be getting steak for suppers. Anyone else have similar set backs?
Setbacks abound around here. Sorry to hear that. As I've read many times - trust your gut. If your boy isn't ready for another dose of chemo, don't do it. He's got that infection to fight and WBC to get up and maintain. Adding chemo to the mix could make all things worse. It's better he feels as best as possible to wage a single war at a time. Feel better, buddy! Take your meds, rest up, eat your yummy meals, and gets all the belly rubs possible!

Hey Jodi, Katy is absolutely right, lots of folks have post-op challenges like this. The important thing is that you caught the infection in time and are doing something about it. The antibiotics can make dogs feel really crappy and not want to eat. What's he on?
