Ok, too far with the poop jokes? I'll contain myself now, I promise.

He's only had that one poop and his farts are the nastiest smelling things I've ever smelt, I think there is something brewing in there lol.
JD has one of the worst night since his first night home. The top of his incision was bleeding in the night so after a few changes he was still whining and it wasn't the I'm in pain whine. So I put a towel on the bed he came up I held ice to his incision (probably fell asleep doing so). And then he finally settled and slept forever, I don't get it he was never up on the bed before now he's an even bigger suck.
So I noticed JD has some muscle twitching by the amp site his back leg also twinges sometimes as well. Is this a sign of phantom pain ?
Also it seems that 2 am is his worst time, last night I told him to come up on my bed I iced his incision and he stopped crying and went back to sleep. Unfortunately I got to wake up to the rear end facing me!
I don't think it's necessarily a sign of pain; they still have functional muscles in there and sometimes they just seem to flex & move & twitch. I don't have enough experience to know for sure, but I see Kermit move those shoulder muscles quite a bit; there's just nothing attached to them!
They're also learning to re-use a lot of muscles that help them ambulate on three legs, so there's bound to be some twinges & soreness in the other limbs as they adjust.
Mmmm, nothing like the scent of a little doggie-generated methane in the morning!

Twitching is a symptom of the nerves mending back together, which can at times be painful but not always. Indications of pain include sudden outbursts, nipping or licking at the surgery site, darting about or pacing and panting. For more info about phantom pain check out Dr. Pam's video discussing common post amputation complications and this document with tips for relieving phantom limb pain in dogs.

Yeah, my Happy Hannah doing same thing as Kermit and JD. Sometimes it did seem more painful than others associated with it. I'm not noticing it happening as much now two weeks out. Yep, the nights seem to be Hannah,s worse time too a nd cycle lasted the first week and finally started getting better going into second week. Nothing better than waking up to dog butt and I bet Mr. JD has a fine morning butt!
Take care, Sally and Happy Hannah

Received some not so great news today, the oncologist called and the lymph node they removed tested positive for cancer cells, she isn't sure if they didn't aspirate that area when they took the aspiration or if the cancer spread that quick after the aspiration. Either way not the greatest news. I just received the Surviving cancer book in the mail today so am going to read through that and go alot more educated when we go next week to see the Oncologist. She was surprised when I told her he's mobilizing on his on and I only now help him down the stairs since there is 7, he goes down the 2 to get outside. He's still quite sleepy but no more drainage and hoping around very well!!
Hi-
You should check out this thread: Lymph Node Metastasis Question. Our resident vets gave some info when Jerry asked about this yesterday.
You are doing the smart thing to read up before your oncologist visit. Make a list of questions and take a note pad to write down the answers. When I started with Maggie lots of the terms and meds were new to me- some of it sounded like a foreign language.
Sounds like JD is making good recovery progress.

Sounds like he is making good progress in his recovery. Are you planning chemo, and does the oncologist think it would effectively eliminate the lymph cells?
Being a nurse has to be a great advantage, if only from the perspective, you probably don't panic as quickly as some of the rest of us.
Sending good thoughts to you on your journey.

JD is a week and half post amputation and he has had a great day! I've cut down his meds as he's almost out so wanted to start weaning him off versus going from 600mg of Tramadol a day to nothing. He's more alert and twice today went down the 7 stairs by himself with no help from me. We went for a short walk may half a block had him off leash for the most part and he was cruising so fast I had to jog to keep up with him, he did great and his now passed out! He was even able to lift his leg while peeing a couple of times.
Woo hooo! Go JD!
Yeah, you'll go through lots of running shoes when you live with a Tripawd

Way to go!!! I'm late to this thread, but I wanted to comment that a few days after Jackson's amp, his stump was twitching all over the place. It never seemed painful, thankfully. I think his nerves were just dancing around in there! So maybe not painful, but probably kinda annoying and funny-feeling.

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12. Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ! No side effects. We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments. He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors! Our love. Our funny little guy!
