I'm just hoping we're making the right choices for our sweet baby.  Capone is 10 years old and recently had a right front leg amputated due to osteosarcoma.  Will be 3 weeks post op on Thursday.   Our vet and oncologist seem to think this is the best thing to give him the best quality of life for the time that he has left.  I think I'm finally chilling out a bit after the surgery and now have something else to stress out about. Hoping the side effects are as mild as my oncologist seems to project.  I guess it will all become very evident after tomorrow.

Wishing you all the best. Skyler had vinblastin chemo once a week for 8 weeks after having her right rear leg amputated. She had a mast cell tumor. She tolerated the chemo very well, and had no side effects. If she had, we probably would have stopped chemo, as it's all about the quality of life. You too can stop the chemo or change protocol if needed.

Please keep us posted! Sending you lots of golden hugs!

gayle was 10 when she lost her right front leg to a soft tissue sarcoma.  we did five rounds of doxorubicin chemo.  we found the tummy issues didn't come up until day three or four after the chemo, and there were some medications our vet gave her to help with that.  the third and fourth treatments seem to be the hardest on her, there were a couple of days when she was very lethargic and i was scared to death...but we got through it.  we're glad we did it, even though it was tough.  several folks have stopped after a certain number of treatments because it was too hard on their pup.  trust yourself, trust your vet and most of all trust capone.  paws crossed for very few symptoms!

Life is good, so very, very good!!! Gayle enjoyed each and every moment of each and every wonderful day (naps included).  She left this world December 12, 2011 – off on a new adventure.

Trouble had five rounds of Carboplatin.  Her side effects were minimal.  She had some mild nausea, seemed to feel a little tired for a few hours the evening of the treatment and with two treatments had some chills that lasted just a few minutes. By the next morning she was good as new.

I struggled with the decision to do chemo.  The vet thought it was our best chance as did my husband.  Between the two of them, they finally convinced me to do one treatment and then decide whether to continue or stop based on how it affected her.

I truly am glad we did, I feel like it helped give her the 27 1/2 months we had with her.  I wouldn't trade that time for anything.

Max had six rounds of carbo.  The first 4 treatments he pretty much blazed through with no problems.  He was a little tired about 24 - 48 hours after the treatment, but other than that, no real issues.  He did have some GI issues on treatments 5 & 6; but again, they passed after a day or two.

And here's a little something extra so you don't totally freak out.  I personally have also had carboplatin for a bit of cancer I had last year.  Don't be surprised if Capone loses his appetite a little after the treatment.  It never made me sick, but food didn't really appeal to me.  So, keep in mind that you may put down a delicious dinner for him, and he may just walk away completely disinterested.

They called me back and my oncologist got stuck in NYC overnight.  Our appointment has been pushed back 1 day.  It's now Wednesday at 4pm.  I'm hoping for the best.

I think they are recommending a total of 4 Carboplatin treatments (1 every 3 weeks) -- 1 more day of waiting.  T

Thanks for all the encouragement and words of advice.  It really helps.

Lylee had her first Carboplatin treatment a little over 2 weeks ago and did fine. Like the others said just a bit fatigued a day or so afterwards for a short while and slightly off her food. I was rather hesitant before doing chemo but so far so good. And we can stop at anytime if we don't want to continue.

They have been checking her blood counts every week as the white cells can get low, hers have dropped (this means the chemo is working - yay!) and so they will check them again to see if she will do the next treatment this week or next.

Big hugg,

Let us know how it all goes!

Okay.  The first Carboplatin treatment has been administered. They said Capone wagged his tail the entire time while the drug was being administered.  We are back home and he is taking a nap.  They said he could have dinner as usual. He was very excited to have food and scarfed it right up. I'm hoping that he does not get sick to his stomach from the dinner he just ate.  Oncologist said the nausea normally occurs around day 3. However, we have medicine if he starts to show any signs.  She also recommended that we put Capone on Rimadyl daily due to his elderly age. Just going to do 50 mg in the AM and PM.   He is 80 lbs and could take about 200 mg daily, but we will start with a lower dose and see how things progress.

Hope everyone is having a great day!

Hoorah! One down. Hope his appetite continues to be good.

All the best,

Jackie, Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. I woke up at 3am and checked on Capone last night.   He stood up to greet me, but quickly sat back down when I opened the door to offer him a potty break.  Went back to sleep for awhile. Got up at 7am and let him out for a potty break.  I was going to wait to feed him when I got back up at 8:30am, but he insisted on being fed an hour early.  Day 1 after chemotherapy - No decrease in appetite.  Got up at 8am, went back out for another potty break.  He was up hopping around while I was doing the morning routine with our other fur baby.

Capone has had a busy morning and is back to chasing rabbits and squirrels in dreamland.
