Has anyone used the above treatment?  It is offered by the vet as a possible limb saving treatment.  Not much on the web about it.

Holistic route April 2017. Lung X-ray 5 May 2017 showed several tennis ball size mets, started cortisone and diuretics. Miss Cow earned her XXL silver wings 12 June 2017, 13 months and 1 week after amputation and 6 1/2 months after lung mets, she was the goofiest dawg ever and is now happily flying from cloud to cloud woof woofing away :-)

Well that's a new one around here. You are an excellent researcher! I looked it up and apparently it was documented as part of a 2004 study:

Intraoperative extracorporeal irradiation for limb sparing in 13 dogs.

One of the scientists involved was Dr. Withrow, a pioneer in limb salvage techniques, most of which occurred after this study.

Since we haven't heard about it until now my guess is that this technique didn't have enough of a success rate to move forward beyond the research phase.

Thank you so much for your research, Luke!

Well, I have to say extra corporeal irradiation sounds really awful 😳🤭...

Plus, it will involve two major operations: one to remove the member affected and another to reattach it 🤢

Also, I would have thought there could be a high risk of infection, etc after second operation takes place 😬

I cannot see (not being a vet) why using radiation in the bone directly will be so much different from cyber knife but, of course, there may be strong reasons for a possible different outcome.

All in all, as Renee points out, if a study done in 2004 is not known here, chances are it was not successful or was too risky.

Good luck for your pup, Oksana, kisses and cuddles 😘🐮💫✨🌟🌹

Thanks for all your replies.  It was a possible treatment offered by the specialist vet.  Nicknamed 'flip and nuke'  I didn't like the sound of it and there was so little information to be found except a trial with 13 dogs and only 50% success.   We decided to go down the amputation route.
