Alright, I need help! Lots of help!

Steve never had any issues with phantom limb pain, so I don't know anything about it. I had skimmed a few posts about it in the past just to have an idea of what to look for should Steve ever develop it.

Esteban is hissing, growling, and snapping at nothing. The other day I was petting him and he went from purring to biting and hissing at me in a split second. Just now, he was eating and growling and no one was near him. Then he snapped in the general direction of where his leg would be, were it still there. He's more irritable, less tolerant. He hisses at Yorrick when Yorrick just walks past him. He used to nudge and head butt Yorrick.

Keep in mind my hands are tied as to what I can do as his medical care is taken care of by the Humane Society. However, I don't know how much experience the vet has with these things, so anything that I can take to them is helpful! We're getting buried under a foot of snow tomorrow, and the vet lives in the middle of nowhere, so I'm guessing she won't be there tomorrow. I'll call them to set up an appointment ASAP, so gimme whatcha got!!

THANK YOU!!!!

Boy, that sure sounds like some type of pain to me, whether it's phantom or another type of post-op pain that Dr. Petty talks about. Is he on any pain medications right now? If he'll let you get near him, check out the area for anything unusual, maybe he's having a suture reaction? Look him over carefully but definitely call the vet asap. So sorry you're getting another storm!

Thank you! I'll check this out! He snuggles and lets me pet him. I've run my fingers over his suture line and over what feels like the muscle suture line. Nothing feels out of sorts, and he doesn't react to that touch.

I definitely worry about some of the places he's been jumping to (and if he's hurt himself doing so), but there's nothing that I can do to stop him. I have to leave the dog crate out because Yorrick has to go in it when we leave the apartment and there is literally no where else to put it, specifically no where behind closed doors.

Well those are all good signs. I hope he's better tonight.

Cats are tough when it comes to monitoring their activity. Do your best, it's all anyone can do.

Have you been able to get out to the vet and if so what was their thoughts on Esteban's behaviors?

I'll keep my fingers crossed that Esteban gets to feeling better and back to his pleasant self soon.

How did the visit go?

Nicholas (R forelimb amputation 2/01/14) had similar issues beginning around three weeks post-op. There was no appreciable pain on palpation of the incision site, but he started having intermittent tremors during which he would become very irritable. Though we couldn't localize it, he was clearly painful. The episodes responded well to pain medication, and eventually resolved.

Due to the weather (it pretty much has not stopped snowing here!) I haven't been able to get Esteban in for an appointment with the vet yet. I called today and made an appointment for Monday, then saw the weather forecast for another big snowstorm Sunday and Monday!! Thankfully, I was able to reschedule for Tuesday!

Esteban seems to be feeling better. He's less irritable and more playful. Today, he was running around with everyone and even got in on the action when I broke out the catnip! I'm still eager to see what the vet has to say. I'll keep you guys posted!
