Emily is on prednisone , 30 mg 2x a day, glucosamine chondroitin 2 x a day, immodium 1 x a day, and Omega 3 1x aday. I have ordered power mushrooms and will be adding those as well. We are waiting for a return call from our vet about the adequan. She was on Tramadal but cried nonstop after a few doses so she is off of that. Thanks for your expertise, Pam. I absolutly love my vet but she does not have hands on experiences dealing with three legged patients (except Em, of corse) and is confident and compassionate enough that she is open to ideas.
Debra & Emily
Debra & Emily, a five year old doberman mix, who was diagnosed with an osteosaecoma. She had a right rear leg amputation on May 19, 2009. On November 10, 2009 she earned her wings and regained her fourth leg.
You might want to consider adding back the Tramadol, maybe at a lower dose. It seems like most dogs tolerate this drug very well once they have recovered from the amputation. Emily's dose would be 50-150 mg 2-3 times daily. I have also had great luck using gabapentin for arthritis at 300 mg twice daily. I would also strongly recommend acupuncture if it is available in your area. I was only paying $50 per session for Tazzie.
That is a huge prednisone dose so I would not add an NSAID on top of it (it would be too much for her stomach to handle).

Hi Debra and Emily,
Sorry to hear about Em's problems, and just wanted to add my support and send you positive thoughts and love. I had not realized that Em and Brody were so close to their amp dates; Brody's was 5/22/09. I have to admit that I have not been on this site in a while. I got so bummed out one night reading about the dogs that were getting mets, that I just decided to not think about it anymore. I haven't had Brody's X-rays taken since the end of his chemo and don't plan on doing it. Luckily Brody is doing fantastic. He is the fastest dog at the dog park and enjoys all of the dogs and people there. He is so much more gregarious after his amp, I think because of all of the attention that he gets. Although I didn't like the fact that he got two transfusions after his amp when he bled out, I am now thinking that perhaps all of that new blood has helped him fight those pesky cancer cells; and yes, he gets his K-9 immunity regularly.
Keep up your valiant fight, Pat and Brody[Image Can Not Be Found]
I am praying for Emily... and all the other babies that are having problems recently...
I hope you get the Adequan shot soon, especially since in Emily's case, you know for sure her back problem is with her hip dysplasia/arthritis... I know how awful you feel when thinking about how mobile Emily was just a month ago. Jake was doing so well up until a week ago. It's so not fair!!!!

Hi Pat & Brody,
I don't know what kind of valiant fight it will be. I think Miss Em is tired of fighting and it is breaking my heart to watch her. Emily had her first adequan shot today so we are going to see how that goes and if she does not get any better we are going to let her go right after Thanksgiving. My youngest son will be home from school on the 20th and will have some time with her before she goes. It is breaking my heart and I have cried till I feel I don't have tears left but somehow I find more.
When Emily got diagnosed with OSA I assumed the cancer would take her and now it doesn't appear she will make it that long. I hate this.

Debra and Emily...
You still have a few weeks until Thanksgiving... and I'm hoping and praying that the Adequan shots will kick in and finally make a difference for Emily!!! Just try to hang in there!!!

Our vet called OSU hospital for a consultation and they want to see Emily on Tuesday. She has her second adequan shot on Monday and will spend Tuesday at OSU and then have her third shot on Thursday. Busy week. Hope it is a productive week, as well.
