Our front leg tripawd basset Maya has developed a sore on her elbow from rubbing on the carpet when she gets up and down. I'm sure this is not uncommon amongst front leg amputees. I have 2 questions. First how should we treat this and secondly how can we prevent this in the future?
Thanks,
Jim & Maya (the tripawd basset)

That makes total sense being that she's having to use a different way to get up and down on three legs.
I'm just wondering if you could take a child's sock, cut the foot out of it and slip it over her elbow? Or maybe some of that sticky tape wrap they use on them when they take blood? I've done that before when our Melody skinned her dew-claw pad. I wrapped it with the tape to help keep it clean and promote healing. It also kept her from bleeding all over the place along with keeping her from licking it.
Give her a smooch for me!

Hmmmm...looks like I screwed something up! It doesn't look like a "real link"....maybe you can "search" some of those on the site and it will come up for yoy.

We tried something similar to the sock but her elbow is so close to her chest that we can't get the wrap to stay up when she walks around. My wife's a nurse and she has tried a couple different types of tape and nothing holds that well. Being a guy I suggested duct tape but that was shot down. A basset's skin produces a natural oil and tape does not stick to it. My wife had to wrap a gauze bandage around her to hold the pain patch in place after her surgery even though the vet shaved her before applying the patch.

Bless her little pea-pickin' heart!
Okay, what I didn't tell you about the "sock" idea was that I took little socks, cut a hole in the upper sides and tied elastic to them. Then when I put the sock on my fur-baby, I would wrap the loop of the elastic across her back and around another leg. Nothing too tight, just a way to keep the sock on her because she was licking her paws (allergies) terribly and would sometimes "lick" her socks off.
She kinda looked like she had garters on, LOL!
