Should I be concerned that Bella (13 days post op) is suddenly eating grass?  I have patches of crabgrass, and she heads straight to them and gobbles.  She's never done this before...

Is Bella still on pain medication.  Many pain meds upset the stomach (just like with people).  Possibly she is trying to settle her stomach.

No pain meds for over one week now.  She has been passing more gas than usual....not to get weird over her "fluffs," but they are different now, also.  No odor, just a lot of noise (blow up a balloon, stretch the neck, then slowly let air out....we hear that squeak all day long).  She eats and drinks and pees and poops great, so I'm not too worried.  Just wondering.  Lord, if she knew I was in here discussing her flatulence, she'd be mortified.

Poor Bella.  The ladies do hate having their unmentionables mentioned. Wink

I would still lean toward gastric upset.  With the gas....could be stress or could be constipation (which was my first thought when you mentioned the gas).  Either way her tummy is bothering her.

If she is constipated you could try giving her a 1/2 cup of bran flakes (absolutely NO raisins) a day and see if that helps a little bit.  This is what my vet told me to do to counteract constipation caused by the anesthesia. (we are only 1 day post-op)

Other things to consider - Has she been wormed recently?, Is she running a temp?  Is she just doing it because she feels "weird" now and is trying anything to feel normal?

If it is the later she may just need more adjustment time.  If it could be one of the others (including constipation) I would talk to your vet.

Nope. I love grass! Just make sure there are no pesticides on it!

Doctors say we eat grass to make up for something missing in our diet. She may just need a little digestive aide, and grass does the trick! Just don't get scared if she starts coughing – she's probably just hacking up extra grass.

Hi, my dog, Charlie is 9 weeks post op and on Chemo. He has also started craving grass. Perhaps it is a mineral deficiency they are craving?

Either way, so long as he's not being sick I'm not too concerned. I shouldn't worry. It's probably just like us needing our vegies!

I'm not sure what it is. I get a lot of veggies every night, but I still go for the big juicy leaves of grass when we're outside. I show no signs of stomach illness whatsoever, so Mom and Dad just leave it at that. A craving.
