Sweetpea has been on a grainfree diet for a couple weeks and has had no difficulties, until yesterday she has had diarrhea. I actually think it was the cooked eggs we put in her food, to add protein. Normally, I would give our dog rice to help, but being on grain free is there an alternative? I have tried pepto x3 doses and she does eat/drink, maybe I should stop feeding her? Any advice would be greatly appreciatedclap

We're not vets, but we would not recommend Pepto Bismol for dogs, especially if the ingredients include xylitol which can be toxic to dogs.

Wyatt has a very sensitive stomach, and we have found green edible clay to work best. You can also give one Immodium tablet, and pumpkin always helps. Good luck!

Do you have any plain canned pumpkin in the house? (Not the pie filling...) A scoop of that in her food will help with the diarrhea.

And, yes, I've also heard to not give Pepto to pups.

As for rice - there's some "controversy" about that. Some say no grains for cancer pups, but Dr. Dressler (author of the Dog Cancer Survival Guide ) says brown rice is ok. I've read that there is some belief that brown rice even has cancer fighting properties.

Hope she feels better!

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Duke gets a big spoonful of psyllium husks in every meal. He has a fast digestive system! 🙂 Don't know if that works with grain free or not. ? Pumpkin hasn't helped him, although it helps lots of dogs. I also keep Metronidazole on hand for emergencies - but it requires a prescription. I know I gave my dogs eggs one time to encourage one of my kids to eat and had some issues after that. My vet also said she has had the same problem in her dogs so to avoid eggs. So, my guess is you are on the right track as far as the culprit. Hope she is feeling better soon.

Poor Sweetpea!  Tummy aches are the worst!

Pepto has an aspirin quality to it (a derivative of salicylate acid) in it which isn't good.   I know because I'm guilty of giving it and my vet told me not to because of asprin quality!

Like Jackie said, pumpkin is good!  And if all else fails go with rice and chicken...just for a day or two so the tummy will calm down.  Two meals of it isn't going to hurt.

Actually, my vet doesn't believe in the grain-free ...for any reason.  But that's a topic for another day which I won't be starting! big-grin
