Day 3 Post Op...our rock star

Here we are at Day 3 post op.  Otis came home yesterday and is doing well.  He is very tired, of course, but when given the chance he is up and moving.  Yesterday some family came over to celebrate Christmas early.  I kept Otis in bed with me in my room but he could hear the commotion in the kitchen and he was not going to be denied.  I finally broke down and brought him out where everyone could love on him.  After 10 minutes or so he jumped up and hobbled over to his favorite Uncle for some love.  He's so determined.  After that he went over to a kitchen chair and was thinking he was going to jump up and have dessert with everyone!  That's my boy!!

Question-When we got him home yesterday he peed quite a bit but hasn't peed since.  He has had the runs twice.  Sorry to be graphic but it's basically shooting out of his bum.  He had water in his dinner and drank water from the bowl last night.  He had water in his breakfast this am so he is getting fluids.  My husband says that the water is coming out in his diarrhea.  I'm thinking he should still be urinating.

I'm not worried about the diarrhea.  He's only had it twice so it's not like he's dehydrated at this point.  His gas is peeling the paint off the walls.  It's SO bad.  I'm guessing it's from the Fentanyl patch.  That's the only med he's on that he hasn't had before.

Would love some feedback on whether he should be peeing more.

Thank you so much!!

Hi Colleen,

I am so glad to hear Otis is home and doing well. The lack of urine may be from the diarrhea. Diarrhea can dehydrate them so it may be why he is not peeing. You can boil up some long grain white or brown rice in water or chicken broth and keep the water when it is done.  Add some of the rice to his food, and you can add some of the water to it also. If it is low sodium broth you can see if you can get him to drink a bit of the water that you boiled the rice in. If not, you can add it to some warmed canned food along with rice and try that for a few days. That should help settle his diarrhea some. Keep him drinking and keep adding the water to stuff, that is perfect! If he likes ice cubes, you can freeze some of that water mixture into cubes and see if he will take it that way.

Between the anesthesia, hospital drugs, and stuff he is on now it does not surprise me that he is a little.... umm.. odiferouslaughing

I hope this helps some, sounds like you are doing a great job with him!

Hugs,

Jackie and Huck heart

Thanks Jackie and Huck!

I add sodium free chicken broth and water into his food.  He's drinking plenty, as much as he usually does, it's just not coming out where I would expect it too.

Like you said though...diarrhea is dehydrating so I'm sure it's just that.  I'm going to try taking him out in a bit and see if we can have some success.

Thanks for your feedback!!

No problem at all. There are medications that can help diarrhea too but if the boiler rice works it's just one less drug to deal with. Fingers crossed for you.

Remember, rest, short potty breaks, and more rest right now 💕💖💕

Woot! Woot! Glad to hear he's doing better. If the runs happen again (don't you worry about being too graphic in this crowd ;), you may want to try edible green clay, it's a lifesaver.

I always forget about the clay! I need to try this for Bo. He has had loose stools several times for no apparent reason, just out of the blue. It would be nice to have some on hand for those moments.

I hope Otis is still doing well and had a good night heart
