Just got home and before going in the house Oscar went to pee! So excited then noticed it was very dark almost red. Called vet but could only get emergency room who don’t know my dog or his situation. Is this normal? He is happy, eating and drinking. The vet didn’t mention anything when I picked him up and said he was good to go home. Was excited to be home with him and now I’m worried

Hey sweetie 🌸

I am not a vet and have not experienced that with my Eurydice but sitting here it doesn’t sound normal to me.

Having said this, I only picked my girl up 3 days after surgery so I would not have known if her pee had been darker as a consequence of the drugs or whatever other reason.

Yet, I am baffled the emergency vets could not tell you if this is normal or not.

When can you talk to the surgeon to get clarification?

Hugs and cuddles 😘🐮💫✨🌟🌹

Eurydice 77kg/170lb Great Dane limping end of April 2016, amputation (right front leg/osteosarcoma) 4 May 2016 6 courses of carboplatin followed by metronomic therapy, lung mets found 30 Nov 2016. 3 courses of doxorubicin, PET scan 26 Jan 2017 showed more mets so stopped chemo. Holistic route April 2017. Lung X-ray 5 May 2017 showed several tennis ball size mets, started cortisone and diuretics. Miss Cow earned her XXL silver wings 12 June 2017, 13 months and 1 week after amputation and 6 1/2 months after lung mets, she was the goofiest dawg ever and is now happily flying from cloud to cloud woof woofing away :-)

First of all, YAY FOR OSCAR'S HOMECOMING!!

Not a Vet and just guessing at a few things,  Could possibly  be rhe hospital meds causing  the discoloration,  maybe a UTI, etc.    Qonder if they put a catheters in him somerime during the sray at rhe clnic?  Food nes that he's  feeling good and Ggad he's eating  and drinking. Really good sign!

But  yes, contact your Vet in the morning.  I would, go ahead and get a sample if you can get him to pee jn the.morning and take it in.

Update  us in the morning.

Hugs

He went to the bathroom again this morning and it mostly yellow and then just a little brown. Got him to drink water last night several times so I’m thinking he was just dehydrated. (Will call vet just to check). He also pooped - yeah!!! Now working on eating and keeping his food down. Threw up most of breakfast about a half hour after eating so I’m going to try smaller portions more often for now.

Yes it's normal after surgery.  This happened to our Max after surgery.  He was home one day or so and it was storming outside one night.  We knew he had to go and Bob had taught him to potty on command by saying do your business.  So we put a cool whip container down there and told him to do your business and he did it in the cool whip container.  It was so dark brown reddish and I freaked out.  Sent an email to his surgeon and he replied it was normal and it was the drugs from surgery working themselves out of his system.  So rest easy!  Hugs!
