Does anyone know if lip licking and drooling are signs of nausea in dogs? Chemo #2 was last Tuesday. He has been eating really well, and almost attacked his food tonight. But he also seems a bit off, cuddling like he does when something is wrong, seems tired, and is a fountain of drool. I am debating whether to give him a Cerenia.
Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016. Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016. Lung mets August 25, 2016. Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016. Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Yes, that is one of the signs that Sassy had. Her nausea hit on the 2nd one and she did get sick to her stomach. So we started giving Cerenia before the chemo & up to 5 days after. That helped keep it at bay

Our vet recommended we give Quincy anti nausea day of chemo and for up to 4 days after to keep it at bay, similar to Sassy. We did that for #1 and 2 and so far so good. We stopped the anti nausea yesterday, just like last time and no issues yet. This time we gave anti diarrhea day of, like the anti nausea, instead of waiting for soft stool (which is what we did last time). Seems to have worked he never developed any this time. He will be on it until Wed since vet said we have to give the full course (7 days). Good luck with Otis!
We also gave cerinia from the day of chemo until a couple days after. I think those signs you mention are probably signs of nausea. Chemo works by staying in the system and each dose, the last dose is still in the system... so it's cumulative.
Hang in there!!! Hugs!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
Same here! Heavy drooling and turning her head away from food. Cerenia on chemo day + 4 days afterwards.
Active 10+ Pyr mix suddenly came up lame with ACL tear in left rear leg. Scheduled for a TPLO but final pre-op x-rays indicated a small suspicious area, possibly OSA, which could have caused the ACL tear. Surgeon opened the knee for TPLO but found soft bone. Biopsy came back positive for OSA. Became a Tripawd 9/18/14. Carbo6 with Cerenia and Fluids. Pain free and living in the moment. Crossed the Bridge on 7/12/15 after probable spread of cancer to her cervical spine. A whole lifetime of memories squeezed into 10 months. Here's her story: Eloise
Thanks everyone. Gave him the Cerenia. He drank lots of water and then settled down for the night. According to the vet, he is now supposed to fast for 24 hours, but as I was preparing Tess' breakfast, I turned around to find him with his whole head in the bag of kitty kibble. Ended up giving him some white rice with a bit of home cooked plain meat. On next chemo, will ask about taking the Cerenia prophylactically. Thank you all for posting your thoughts so quickly!

YAY! So glad Otis is feeling so much better! I was very lucky in that mt Happy Hannah never experienced nausea.
Isn't cat food an amazing ...err...appetite stimulant!? I guess it's great junk food in a dog's mind! Sounds like his meat and rice made for a perfect dessert!

Another not so great night. Got home from work and I could just tell he wasn't feeling great. Kind of down, slumped posture. But soooo hungry - that has got to be the lab half. Anyway, more puppy rice and a Cerenia. When I went to bed, he went to sleep on a yoga mat in another room. Very unusual and made me a little sad. But sometime in the night, he came back to his bed by me, and this morning seems normal. I'm off for the next 6 days so will be better able to observe him through the day. I know the chemo should have benefits, and he is not horribly sick, but I still feel bad putting him through this.

Should also mention that it is very expensive prescription cat food for my senior cats. Nothing but the best for Ofis.

This light eating is not working for Otis. Every time I go into the kitchen he is 100% head in the fridge begging. When I was putting groceries away, he grabbed a bag of the counter and started hopping away with it. (Not normal behavior). When I was cleaning the pantry, he tried to help himself to any dog, cat and people food he could get. I ended up giving him a small second breakfast.

Sounds like Otis is quite the master at grabbing food anywhere within lu ging reach! Some real l y great athletic maneuvers for a large new tripawd! Good job Otis! YAY for a seco d breakfast! Now if you can get that second lunch and seco d supper you have trained your human with a skill all dogs want to learn!
Hopefully the next chemo will be a little easier on him. Keep us posted.
Hugs to all!

Otis now feeling like himself again. At bedtime, he jumped up on my bed and sprawled out like he owned it. I spent the night shivering (he was on my blankets) and trying to find a place for my legs, but couldn't be happier. Chemo #2 officially over!

Good!! Way to go Otis AND Tess!
All of us whose dogs allow us to sleep in THEIR bed can relate to a coverless night sleeping like a pretzel on three inches of mattress! And YES, we wouldn't trade it for the world!!
