Great news! Cemil stood up to eat for the first time this evening, exactly 2 weeks after his operation. His staples came out on Saturday and they took him off Tramadol and started a second antibiotic because he's still draining some and had a slight fever. He tires very easily and sleeps about 23 hours a day--looks like he's going to be one of the slower ones. That's okay. He's progressing, just not at the speed of some of the others. At the rate he's been going, standing up to eat is huge.

Like people dogs recover at different speeds. As Heather said every milestone is one to celebrate & it sounds like he's well on his path to recovery.

Hey it sounds like he's taking it easy, which is good. Some dogs try to do too much at first and they risk hurting themselves. Cemil's got it right; enjoy all of the spoiling, soak up the relaxation, and let the body do its thing. He'll be hopping around in no time!

We're so glad you wrote. It's so good to hear all of the different ways that our fur kids recuperate. Keep up the good work!

Thank you all. This requires a lot of faith for me, and that faith comes from this group. Without you all, I'd have been pretty discouraged. But tonight, again, Cemil stood up when I got home from work, and actually wagged his tail a little. I think he's starting to feel better. Consequently, so do I. I'll keep you posted, and who knows--maybe Cemil himself will feel like writing one of these days!

That means a lot to us Mary, because that's exactly why we maintain this site. Thank you for your continued support.

Cemil sure looks happy to get those staples out! Thanks for sending the photos …

I'm glad Cemil is starting to feel better!  Zeke's three weeks post op tomorrow.  He slept a lot too during the first two weeks but he had his spunky moments.  He tires quickly after a short walk for his potty break.  Tonight was the first time he ate using his new stand.  He was wary of it for a long time! I try not to let my worries get the best of me and take it one day at a time.  My husband and I have to remind ourselves that he has to move at his own pace.  We also have to remind ourselves to not panic when he takes a tumble.  This site has been so helpful to us in the past few weeks since we first found out.  Reading others' stories was the main reason we decided to go through the amputation and chemo.

I'm sure Cemil will continue to improve.  Everyday you'll have new little victories to celebrate together.  Keep us updated!

Great reminder and well said Katie! Zeus has been sluggish this week (all week and usually he is only sluggish on Monday's after the weekend) and I am worrying neurotically - LOL. You are soooo right - they have to recover, move, play and just be at their own pace and in their own time. We humans just try and control every little thing don't we? We would be smart if we could remember such simple things eh?

Cemil - you sure look pretty spoiled there pal - milk it baby - milk it! Seriously Mary - he looks great and he's SUCH a handsome boy. Like Jerry said, he's probably one of the smarter ones that is actually listening to his body when it tells him to take it easy! Please keep us posted - we love to hear about all the little, but truly wonderful and uplifting milestones ~ including tail waggin'

Much love

Okay..another mini-milestone: Cemil also has been wary of the elevated food dish, but tonight he used it a little bit. For about 1/3 of his dinner, then he wanted to eat the rest lying down. I think he *is* milking it!

He is quite a pretty fur child.  He's just taking his sweet time and healing at his own pace.  One day he'll get up and run you a good race!

Yey Cemil! It's those little achievements that mean so much when we are recovering. Keep up the good work my friend, and keep on letting everyone spoil you. You deserve it!
