Can’t Get Catheter Placed?

Hi!

We took our guy for his first chemo treatment today. They did bloodwork and all was fine. They were able to get the vein but couldn’t get the catheter all of the way in and placed properly. It’s 19 days post op and he did have quite a few places on his legs and paws shaved when he came home. They said due to all of the times he’s been stuck lately it could just be he needs more time to heal. They told us to come back in one week to try again.

Is this common? Anyone else have this issue? Did anyone ultimately have to have a port placed? They said we might have to consider this if we strike out again next week.

Hmmmm.....I'm sure it's  happened before, but can't  remember  it. Poor guy...that can have been pleasant bei g poked and prodded.

Like you, I'll just look for feedback from others.  I know with people Porter often used, so no biggie if that's  the case

Ouch! That must have hurt. Did they say it was because his veins weren't accepting it or because he was squirmy?

I'm not recalling anyone who has had this happen and forum search results didn't turn anything up for me. I do know that it happens in human cancer patients all the time.

You might want to Ask Dr. Pam and get her take on this. Don't panic though, another week to wait isn't a big deal.

His veins just weren’t having it. Two different doctors tried. I felt so bad for him! They tried in all three legs. She said he just laid there and let them do whatever they needed. He was great! He truly thinks “any attention is good attention” and even after just having his amputation he was PUMPED to be back at the vet for all of the love and pets.

I’m not too concerned about the one week wait. I’m more worried about if this happens again and he needs a port. My sister went through chemo so I’m familiar with the port placement and how that’s typically used for humans. I just didn’t recall hearing of any other dogs that needed one. Seems uncomfortable and harder to keep clean and free of infection for a dog.

I guess I’m just wondering if it’s painful or uncomfortable for him and if I should rethink chemo if he does indeed need a port.

Wow he's such a good boy. I know I wouldn't be that nice if it happened to me.

You're right, I can't recall another member having to use a port. That is hopefully a good sign that it's so rare it wouldn't happen now, so paws crossed his veins get happy.

Saw your post to Dr. Pam! I look forward to her response.
